screenrant1 Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: July 12, 2009 This week:

Bruno is the box office king; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle’s want You; Hollywood loves Hooker; Jason Statham goes on a Blitz; Zooey Deschanel is Your Highness and Robert DeNiro and Paul Schrader see The Dying of The Light.

Box Office

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Bruno took the top spot over the weekend with a gross of $30 million. It’ll need legs like a supermodel to reach the coveted $100 million mark.

Crossing the century mark this weekend is Ice Age 3-D: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs $28 million this weekend the animated pics total now stands at $120 million. Expect an Ice Age 4.

Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen banked another $24 million giving the Michael Bay action epic a grand total.

After breaking records last year with The Dark Knight, it has been a disappointing summer for Christian Bale. Terminator Salvation underperformed at the start of the summer and now Public Enemies looks to fall short of the $100 million mark. $14 million this weekend gives the Johnny Depp starrer a $66 million total.

After taking $10 million over the weekend, The Proposal now has $113 million in the bank. That’s good news for Ryan Reynolds after Wolverine and his attachment to The Green Lantern, but great news for the 40+ Sandra Bullock who proves she’s still a box office draw.

The Hangover banked $9 million over the three days giving the comedy an astounding $222 million total.

I Love You, Beth Cooper beefed it over the weekend (that is an accurate technical term) giving Chris Columbus his lowest opening in almost 20 years. Looks like Hayden Panettiere won’t be having a big movie career if they all open like this.

Cameron Diaz’s My Sister’s Keeper brought in another $5 million, that gives the weepy a total of $35 million. It should be a big hit on DVD.

Tony Scott’s The Taking of Pelham 123 banked just over $1.5 million for a total of $61 million. Considering the star power of Denzel Washington and John Travolta this has to be a bit of a disappointment.

Outside the top 10 Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smith hit $170 million; Star Trek hit $251 and comedy flops Year One and Land of The Lost brought their totals to $41 million and $48 million respectively.

Movie News

1. Those heroes in a half shell are at it again. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are set to return in a big screen reboot.

According to SlashFilm there’s an open casting call for anyone who wants to star as a member of the Foot Clan.
The casting call takes place next Saturday and anyone attending will have to give a thirty second martial arts demonstration.

Visit SlashFilm.com for all the details.

2. Hollywood appears to gave gone on a William Shatner remake frenzy as they’re now eyeing a big screen version of Shatner’s TJ Hooker.

The 80’s cop show, which also starred Heather Locklear, is set to be rebooted by Eraser and Scorpion King director Chuck Russell.

According to Variety:

“The writing team of Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson will script the story, which focuses on the relationship between the title character and his father.”

That pretty much ensures a role for Shatner, and I’m going to guess that Ben Stiller and Will Ferrell will be at the top of some casting directors list for portray the titular Hooker – after all this is being pitched as an “action comedy”

3. Jason Statham appears to be giving actioners a break with a role in Brit flick Blitz. Statham has apparently signed on to play “a rather crude, un-PC, borderline sociopath of a cop” Detective Sergeant Brant in the film that will co-star Paddy Considine.

According to Crimespree Cinema:

“The South East London police squad are down and out: Detective Sergeant Brant is in hot water for assaulting a police shrink, Chief Inspector Roberts’ wife has died in a horrific car accident, and WPC Falls is still figuring out how to navigate her job as a black female investigator in the notorious unit. When a serial killer takes his show on the road, things get worse for all three. Nicknamed “The Blitz” by the rabid London media, the killer is aiming for tabloid immortality by killing cops in different beats around the city.”

Sounds like it could be quite good. Although I have said that before…

4. Zooey Deschanel will join Danny McBride, James Franco and Natalie Portman in Your Highness.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

“”Highness,” written by Ben Best and Danny McBride, centers on an arrogant, lazy prince (McBride) who must complete a quest to save his father’s kingdom. Joining him on the quest is his more heroic brother (James Franco). Deschanel plays Belladonna, Franco’s virginal bride.”

The film starts shooting in Belfast this month.

5. Robert DeNiro is attached to star in a news script by Paul Schrader.
The Taxi Driver and Raging Bull duo will re-team in CIA thriller The Dying of the Light.

DeNiro will play an aging CIA agent who is slowly losing his memory and he must find a way to recall and save all the secrets locked within his mind as he ventures on one final mission.

Schrader and DeNiro equals must see.

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

  1. Why can’t they just continue the story already set by the first four films instead of doing yet another reboot.

  2. Transformers 2 a grand total of…?

*Goes to boxofficemojo to find out*

  3. Damn, an estimated $339,208,000 … *falls over*

    $672,302,317 worldwide.

I’ll be honest, this is WAY beyond my imagination even as a lifelong Transformers fan that a TF movie would make this much. Too bad it wasn’t a better film.

  4. Niall, unfortunately I think you are right about TJ Hooker. Could also be Jim Carrey, too. I wonder if Heather Locklear will be in it, too?

Just waiting to hear about a “Fall Guy” movie any day now.

  5. I hope Statham can pull off the intensity of a badguy cop. This could be the biggest stretch of acting we ever see out of him.
They can’t all be Batman films Bale,,,
That concept for DiNero’s film sounds like it would do better as a comedy… I can see some funny moments having him overdose on Ginko Bibloba.
I can’t see myself watching Bruno in a theater with other people that actually want to see Bruno in a theater… No movies for me this weekend, maybe for a couple weekends,,,

  6. @790…

I can’t believe ANYONE went to watch Bruno. Just the previews for it kept me from wanting to see it. I’m surprised it made the #1 movie. I read that it had a huge dropoff from Saturday to Sunday, and the reviews of the general public have NOT been good at Yahoo movies. I’d be suprised if this piece of trash tops $50 mil total now.

  7. Andy, I think Borats fanbase and the gay community helped make the film a hit… 😯

  8. The Taking of Pelham 123 @61million for a movie that cost 100 million to make &probably another 40-50 million to market.. that’s gotta be a HUGE disappointment for the studio..

Public Enemies will probably finish in the 90-100 million doallr range with a small chance of getting over 100 million in total. This has to be somewhat of a disappointment for the studio as well..

  9. bruno sucked (pun intended)…

  10. I don’t wanna see “Bruno” simply b/c I think Cohen is overrated and not funny at all….even “Borat” was funny to me.

  11. Bruno was hilarious in my opinion… I’m so going to buy the blu-ray for the extras. Hopefully TF2 makes alot more money as well…

  12. It’s interesting that in the UK Cohen tried switching from Ali G to Bruno and Borat and no one liked them. Somehow he found someone to give him the movies to make.
Now he’s done all three, he might have to try something new.

The Statham thing sounds cool, especially with Considine. One of best actors in Britain if you ask me (not that anyone did).

  13. At over 40, i think sandra bullock was the hottest ive ever seen her in that movie.

  14. You know, I’ve always seen her as an airhead, and because of that can’t really find her attractive. Not saying she is, probably just how some of the characters she has played have portrayed her, but once that image is in my mind, it’s hard to ignore it, lol.

  15. That never bothers me…lol.

  16. Ah yes, I know, I’m weird, for some reason a person’s personality actually affects how I actually see them. I know she’s attractive, but everytime I see her face, the first thing that pops into my head is “dumb airhead” not how she looks… Can’t help it…

  17. Every time I see you avatar, Ken, I think, ‘Tin man, needs a heart.” (Just joking.) 😉

  18. There’s a heart of gold in there somewhere. Oh wait, that’s still metal!

  19. @Ken J, you’re talking about Bullock? Haha, yeah I get the same way. Especially after Demolition Man I just see her as a clutz. I know she is smart and has strong opinions but I cannot help it as well.
Is she still hooked up to Jesse James?

  20. Hopefully the bruno will crash this next weekend. As a mature film attendee, those types of “films” do not interest me one bit. Glad HP is finally here this coming week!

  21. I just knew TROTF would make this type of money, even though it’s not all that great. I’ve talked to many people about the first movie and the idiotic humor and lack of plot just isn’t enough to shy them away from the stellar effects and action. Expect more of the same, unfortunately.

I did think Borat was funny but too gross to buy. The trailers for Bruno just turned me off; there’s no way I can see myself spending any money on this.

  22. Harry Potter WILL OWN next weekend. I predict a gross between 120-130. Having already seen the film I hope it tops Transformers because it’s really a much better and funnier film

  23. Bruno has an internal multiplier of 2.1 so that bodes for a final box office tally of 60-65 million (and that’s being generous) so it will collapse next weekend and probably be down 60-70%. This will definitley NOT have a bigger second weekend than Borat…ALthough Borat did expand significantly in it’s second weekend.

My wife and I are going to see TROTF tonight…See what all the hullaballoo is about…

  24. @Iron Knight
I have heard that ticket sales for HP are outselling TROTF before it came out officially, so your wish may get granted. So far, HP is at %97 on rottentomatoes. Black Dynamite also comes out this week; if I get one of those free passes when I go see HP, it may be a double-header for me.

  25. saw transformers last night on Imax. The first one I think had a stronger story, but this one definitely had better scenes with the big robots, and Optimus Prime kick some ass.
    Definitely some slow scenes though.
My girlfriend really liked it, and mentioned how there was a love story for the girls that watched it.
