This week: Avatar gets a Dear John letter from moviegoers; Russell Mulcahy has a hairy moment when directing Teen Wolf; Salma Hayek can’t go any Faster; it looks like it wasn’t happily ever after for Disney’s Enchanted and Warner Bros. have joined The Heist Society.
It had to happen sometime – but I never thought that Avatar would be brought down by a Channing Tatum starrer!
Military drama Dear John wrestled the top spot at the box office from longstanding champ Avatar. The film which also stars Mama Mia’s Amanda Seyfried stole $32 million from the hearts and wallets of moviegoers.
Avatar might have fallen to second place, but that’s not to say that it had a big drop. The James Cameron epic banked another $22 million bringing its total to an astounding $628 million domestically.
The third place slot was filled by John Travolta in From Paris with Love. The action thriller from Taken director Pierre Morel had a disappointing debut and it just didn’t match last year’s Liam Neeson starrer.
Mad Mel Gibson dropped to fourth place with Edge of Darkness. The Martin Campbell directed thriller now has a total of $29 million. A finish in the region of $50 million seems likely.
Taking a smidgen under $7 million was Dwayne Johnson’s Tooth Fairy. The family comedy has now banked $34 million.
When in Rome laughed up another $5.6 million for a $21 million total, while Denzel Washington’s The Book of Eli shot up another $5 million for a $82 million total gross. Will it make it to $100 million?
The Oscar nominated Crazy Heart cracked the top ten with a weekend gross of $4 million. $11 million already in the bag means that the films gross will just keep growing. And then Jeff Bridges will get his Oscar…
Legion dropped lower in the top ten bringing in another $3.5 million. It will finish off with just under $50 million, which isn’t such a bad thing considering that it was a relatively low budget film.
All the box office chat lately seems to be about Avatar, but let’s not forget the amazing feat of The Blind Side. The Sandra Bullock film is still in the top ten and it has grossed $241 million so far. With an Oscar likely for Bullock the sky is the limit for this sporting drama.
1. Highlander helmer Russell Mulcahy is set to get his claws out and direct the remake of Teen Wolf. The original 1985 film starred Michael J. Fox as a teen who turns into a wolf. The title says it all really.
Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed and Dylan O’Brien star in the remake which is set for release later this year.

2. Salma Hayek has dropped out of the action flick Faster.
Director George Tillman Jr better get his skates on to recast as the film starts shooting tomorrow!
Dwayne Johnson headlines the film from The CBS Films and Sony Pictures, with Billy Bob Thornton also starring.
3. What happens when a film makes more than $340 million? Hollywood tries to get a sequel made.
That’s what is happening to 2007’s Enchanted, the Disney Princess film that starred Amy Adams, James Marsden, Patrick Dempsey and Susan Sarandon.
Anne Fletcher, the director of The Proposal is in the frame to direct the film which is set to reunite the stars of the first film.
Jessie Nelson the writer/ director of I Am Sam and Stepmom will pen the script for the film which will undoubtedly follow animated Princess Giselle as she is forced to walk the mean streets of New York once more. After rereading that last sentence, I do release that it could be taken the wrong way. It’s a children’s film, so you know what I mean!
4. Warner Bros. have bought the rights to Ally Carter’s The Heist Society.
The as yet unpublished novel “centers on a teenage girl balancing school and her family’s criminal activities. In the novel, the story’s triggered by powerful mobster being robbed of his priceless art collection — with the girl’s father as the main suspect — and the protagonist responding by assembling a crew to steal it back.”
Shauna Cross will adapt the book for the screen, which will change the ages of the characters from teenagers to their early twenties – presumably to try and snag a few cast members of Twilight!
That’s it for now. See you at the movies.
