Wow, if a highlight of a movie is a police officer who is doing his job being intentionally crushed by a car then I’m ecstatic that we’re on opposite sides in movie taste.

And if it had awesome “grey goo effects,” well then WHAT was I thinking?

It is a period style piece, and people who don’t get the sci-fi 50s feel, aren’t getting the very subtle humor in it. I loved it, and hey, they made 31 million the first weekend at no.1, around another 31 million around the world, plus 10 million this last weekend just before Christmas. I would say they might weather the storm, even if you didn’t like it…it just might survive without you.

Keanu delivers a convincing Klaatu who is both sinister and sensitive, Jennifer Connelly is fabulous because she just can’t be anything else, and Will and Jada Smith’s kid is as compelling and talented as his parents are. What’s not to like? It has so many cool elements to it, not to mention Klaatu smacks a NJ State Trooper! That is worth my 14 bucks!!! Nerds in NYC loved it! The grey goo effects are awesome as well, for fanboys who are actually really science afficionados, and not just comic-con regulars. The Day the Earth Stood Still isn’t a brow twisting toe pulling journey into carbon footprinting, but makes its statement and moves on. Refreshingly, it is NOT preachy. See it, eat popcorn, and have fun! It will likely join the classic Sci-Fi collections of everyone who treasures this genre.

@Ken J-I had to read that book in HS and it was one of the most BORING books I have ever read, so it stands to reason that the movie bored me too. I don’t mind drama, but does it have to be so DULL?

Not to mention if you read the guy’s purpose for making the film, it sounds like he wants to change it up so it’s more preachy because he thinks that we need to learn something from it blah blah blah… no thanks

The first one? They have made probably 12 different versions of that novel. The best one is the Robert Redford one I think because they went with the book word for word just about. You can basically read the book while the movie was playing and it will be in sync.

But it wasn’t an action movie or anything, it was all drama, so if that’s not your thing, I’m sure you would have fell asleep within the first 20 minutes. I liked it, but I agree that I don’t think it should be redone. Since it’s based on a novel and they already have a version that matches the novel 100%, anything different would be a step down in my opinion. There’s no use for it…

Am I the only one who DOESN’T want to see The Great Gatsby redone? The first one was a snoozefest. From what I’ve heard Australia is a snoozefest and now that director is redoing Gatsby? You can use THAT film as a cure for insomnia!!

Uh, right… whatever.

Good word of mouth on this would have trumped “blogosphere fanboys” any day or the week. If people thought it was great they’d recommend it to their friends. 75% is HUGE! I don’t recal the last time a big event movie dropped that much in its second weekend.

Maybe you can go see it a few more times and try to bring the numbers up.

Um, in case you haven’t figured it out, “fanboys” typically are overly SUPPORTIVE of something that might not otherwise deserve it. They don’t just randomly oppose things unless they see it as a threat or competition for what they are a “fanboy” of. What would these “fanboys” be fans of? Non-TDTESS?? Does that even make any sense?

I think people go on blogs and forums and trash movies they see as a way to WARN others not to make the same mistake and waste their money…

The reason it dropped is because of stupid fan boys who flooded the blogosphere with inaccurate information about tdess and tore it apart. I saw it twice. Both times the audience clapped at the end. Hopefully tdess finds legs so Keanu fans can give all of you the finger!!!

Everyone I know who saw it says it was pretty bad…

Anyway, I’m actually quite interested in Flying Tigers. I remember watching one of those Dogfights shows on History and it was about that. It was funny because they Japanese flew into that area expecting some easy kills, guess they were bored so they felt like killing some innocent people to pass the time, but little did they know that area had some of these fighter pilots and the small Japanese squadron was completely caught off guard and was slaughtered. I can’t wait to see that on the big screen…

A 75% drop from opening to second weekend for DTESS is freaking brutal. Usually anything over 60% signals bad word of mouth, but 75%? Bloody OUCH.
