Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 25, 2010

In this week’s comedy infused edition:

Jennifer Lopez needs a Back-up Plan as she’s defeated by a Dragon; Woody Allen spends Midnight in Paris with Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard and Rachel McAdams; Helen Mirren looks after Russell Brand in Arthur; five words: Dances With Wolves The Musical; Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher become Friends for Ivan Reitman and Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling get to hang out with Marisa Tomei and Josh Groban.

Box Office

Hold over hit How to Train Your Dragon flambéed the competition over the weekend. The animated tale banked $14.5 million on its fifth weekend. The DreamWorks ‘toon has now scored $177 million in total.

It looks like Jennifer Lopez’ career comeback is going to need a back-up plan, as The Back-up Plan failed to ignite audience interest since it debuted on Friday. The oft-delayed romantic comedy was supposed to kick-start J-Lo’s career which has been faltering in recent years. A $12 million gross isn’t a total disaster but it’s hardly a sign of a longevity in the difficult years that actresses get to when they hit 40.

Holding up surprisingly well in third was Date Night. The Tina Fey/ Steve Carell comedy has now captured $63 million showing that the two television stars are a bankable commodity on the big screen.

Kick-Ass dropped to fourth position on its second weekend. The violent superhero movie managed about $9.5 million over the three days giving it a total in the region of $35 million. It should get to about $60 million – which is pretty decent considering that it cost about $30 million to produce. Then expect it to find its audience on DVD.

The Losers were just that – losers. The Joel Silver-produced action flick failed to shoot-up the competition. At least Chris Evans has banked the Captain America role, so he shouldn’t be too depressed. As for the rest of the cast? Well,  Zoe Saldana will always have Avatar.

Clash of The Titans banked a further $8.5 million. The sword and sandal epic has now managed $145 million. Sweet Zeus!

Death at a Funeral brought in another $8 million. The comedy has now managed to score over $28 million. Expect it to die next week.

Disney’s Oceans scored $8 million from 1, 200 screens. The Pierce Brosnan narrated eco-movie should stay afloat for a while a make a trawler load of cash.

The Last Song upped its total to $55 million after managing $3.5 million, while Alice in Wonderland scored just over $2 million, giving the Tim Burton/ Johnny Depp effort a $327 million total.

Movie News

1. Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris has now added Kathy Bates, Michael Sheen, Nina Arianda, Tom Hiddleston, Corey Stoll, Mimi Kennedy and Kurt Fuller to its cast.

“(The film is) a romantic comedy about a family travelling to the French capital for business. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.”

Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard and Rachel McAdams and French First Lady of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

I’m always up for a new Woody Allen movie, and there’s nothing about this that says that this should be any different.

Allen’s next film, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger will be unveiled at Cannes next month.

2. Helen Mirren has signed on the dotted line to star alongside Russell Brand in the remake of Arthur.

Mirren will play the drunken titular character’s “longtime nanny,” a role that many believed would go to Meryl Streep. I’m guessing that Mirren is easier on the budget.

“Cuddly” Dudley Moore, John Gielgud and Liza Minnelli starred in the original 1981 comedy.

The Jason Winer directed film starts shooting in New York in July.

3. It looks like Dances With Wolves is joining  Hairspray and possibly Spider-Man (if they sort out their money woes and find a replacement for Alan Cumming) and is getting the stage-musical treatment.

Producer Matt Murphy has acquired the stage rights to the multi-Oscar winning epic western which was based on a novel by Michael Blake.

According to Variety:

“Murphy wants to adapt the story into a big-budget tuner with a score drawing on Civil War-era song traditions including Appalachian, Native American and folk.”

I’d also imagine that John Barry’s elegant score will also be used in some capacity.

There’s no word if Kevin Costner will be involved – but he has released a country album called Untold Truths with his band Modern West. It’s actually pretty good, you should check it out!

4. Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher will topline Ivan Reitman’s forthcoming untitled comedy – which was formerly titled Friends With Benefits.

According to Variety:

“(The film) centers of the question of whether two long-term friends can have a purely sexual relationship without falling in love.”

Greta Gerwig, Kevin Kline, Ophelia Lovibond and Ben Lawson offer support in the film which is will be produced by Portman’s handsomecharliefilms and Kutcher’s Katalyst.

Don’t blame me for those misspellings and punctuation – I don’t own those companies!

When the film is completed, Reitman may (or may not) move on to direct Ghostbusters 3(D?).

5. Oscar winner Marisa Tomei and musician Josh Groban have joined the cast of the untitled Steve Carell/ Ryan Gosling comedy.

According to Variety:

“Story centers on a father whose life unravels while he deals with spousal problems and tries to manage his relationship with his children. Annaleigh Tipton (“America’s Next Top Model”) and Emma Stone have already been cast.

Tomei will play the first woman that Carell’s character dates after he’s been schooled by Gosling’s character in the art of meeting women. Groban will play the boyfriend of Stone’s character.”

Considering that this film doesn’t have a title yet, I suggest “Moving On”. Feel free to use it Warner Bros – just give me a cameo and 20 minutes at the craft services table.

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

  1. Hey , will somebody tell me how old Hellen Mirren is ?

She looks pretty hot in that picture , Wow :)
    is she seeing anybody?

  2. wow, if you make less money than a J Lo movie you are truly a loser :·(

  3. The Losers wasn't that good… The villain was way too cartoony, and the movie was too wannabe stylistic… Like a lot of “cool” slo-mo shots and what-not…

And what was with them wearing the Flag on the wrong shoulder when they were wearing ACU's in one scene?? That was strange, a quick google of any modern soldier wearing that uniform would have revealed their mistake, seriously…

  4. I thought it was pretty good for a popcorn flick; nothing special but I did laugh (especially at Evans) and some of the action was pretty good. I expected it to be higher than 5th.

  5. Natalie Portman! An Ashton Kutcher starring remake of like . . . well alot of films. Really!!!! I'm disappointed in you!

  6. So is this Carell/Gosling movie a new Hitch? It sounds terrible. Then again, Gosling makes anything terrible. But Marisa Tomei's in it so I might watch it… no, I won't.

  7. It's time for J-Lo to fire her agent. She needs to go back to making interesting movies like she did with “The Cell” and do movies that are more thought provoking, suspense, and drama. These romantic comedies are not helping her career and it looks so fake seeing her portray these characters in them. The more she does these fake/no depth/cheesy/ricecake/wafer-thin “arse” characters(Character-wise not physically),the more it seems to be making her arse more wafer-thin (not good).
