This week:

Fast Five races away with the box office crown; Dwayne Johnson to become a country music star; Paul Walker decides to rent Vehicle 19; F. Javier Gutiérrez has The Greys; Universal sets a date for an American Reunion; big names lend their voices to Ice Age 4; and more!

Box Office

“What box office slump?” was the question Fast Five asked this weekend. The fifth installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise bested all of its predecessors, including 2009’s record-breaking Fast & Furious, by opening with an estimated $83.6 million gross in the U.S. That helped raise the overall American box office revenue for the weekend – which marked a 50% gain over this same period last year.

Fast Five also hit it off with casual moviegoers and even more finicky film critic types alike (read our review) – needless to say, those early plans for Fast and the Furious 6 weren’t so premature after all.

Rio dropped to second place this weekend, taking in around $14.4 million and upping its total cume to $103.6 million. Rest assured, Fox is already developing plans for Rio 2: Electric Boogaloo (I kid – sort of).

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family suffered a (expected) large drop of 60% from last weekend, taking in another $10 million or so for a total of $41 million. Perry’s wacky cross-dressing days likely won’t be coming to an end anytime soon, either…

Water for Elephants was down around 45% from its opening weekend and took in an estimated $9.1 million for a $32.1 million total. Insert obligatory Robert Pattinson sparkling-in-the-sunlight joke here.

Disney’s Prom (a.k.a. High School Musical, minus the musical) opened in theaters with a gross of around $5 million, about half of what the Mouse House was hoping for.

Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil 3D only managed to open with an estimated $4.1 million, proving that moviegoers weren’t exactly quivering to see a followup to the Shrek knockoff 2005 original.

Soul Surfer continued to hold up well, taking in another $4.1 million or so for a total gross of $33.7 million.

Insidious scared up another $2.8 million, lifting its total cume to $48.4 million. The old-fashioned horrorfest cost less than $2 million to make and has turned a nice profit for FilmDistrict.

With the Easter holiday come and gone, Hop dropped to ninth place, taking in another $2.2 million for a total gross of around $104.9 million.

Scream 4 rounded out the top ten with an estimated take of $2.1 million, lifting its total to $35.4 million. While the sequel only cost some $40 million to make, it ought to be mentioned that Dimension Films/The Weinstein Company will only get half of that revenue. Sorry folks, but Scream 5 is looking dead right now.

Movie News

1. Dwayne Johnson will shift gears after this weekend’s fifth Fast and the Furious vehicle (excuse the puns) by producing and starring in a biopic about black country music legend Charley Pride. The project was originally going to mark the reunion of Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer/star Terrence Howard – but, as the actual Charley Pride put it, “…then the ball got fumbled.”

Mr. Pride led quite the eventful life – he (briefly) played professional baseball, spent time in the Army, became a country music superstar, and struggled with depression throughout it all – so hopefully his biopic will be equally interesting. Johnson may not seem a obvious choice for the lead role, but “The Rock” arguably has enough charismatic screen presence to pull it off. Besides, at least he won’t be wearing a tutu in this one.

2. Paul Walker isn’t going to stop driving cars really, really fast onscreen anytime soon. The Fast and The Furious franchise star has signed on to star in/executive produce Vehicle 19, an indie thriller from South African filmmaker Mukunda Michael Dewil.

Dewil’s well-regarded script spins a Hitchcockian yarn about a tourist (Walker) who ends up getting caught in a web of deceit involving the local police – after he inadvertently picks up the wrong rental car. Expect the film to feature numerous close-ups of Walker looking concerned while local authorities try and kill him for not booking a vacation package with AAA (I kid, I kid…).

3. Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall) may have lost out on the chance to helm the upcoming reboot/remake/whatever of The Crow, but he’s since lined up a deal to helm The Greys – now that Dimension Films has gone ahead and purchased Adam Cohen’s spec script for the mysterious sci-fi thriller.

So, to recount: Bob and Harvey Weinstein have purchased the rights to a script that few people know anything about – written by a guy you’ve probably never heard of – and have hired a relatively obscure foreign filmmaker to direct it.

4. The original American Pie gang will reunite next year in… American Reunion. Universal Pictures has settled on a theatrical release date of April 6th, 2012 for the fourth installment in the franchise (just forget about all those direct-to-DVD spin-offs – you probably already have anyway).

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the minds behind the Harold and Kumar movies, are writing and directing American Reunion, which will hit theaters nine years after the third official entry in the series, American Wedding, was released.

Well, that strategy – waiting about ten years between the third and fourth chapter – worked wonders for the Scream franchise at the box office, right? Wait…

5. Ice Age 4 (a.k.a. Ice Age: Continental Drift) is now set to feature the vocal talents of Jeremy Renner, Jennifer Lopez, Wanda Sykes, Keke Palmer, Aziz Ansari, and hip hop talent Drake – along with franchise staples Ray Ramano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Seann Williams Scott, and Josh Peck (and you thought the voice cast for Toy Story 3 was packed).

Ice Age 4 voice cast includes Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lopez Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: May 1st, 2011

The fourth Ice Age flick is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 13th, 2012; that is very close to three years exactly after the release of the third installment, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. This series has grossed around $2 billion worldwide for Fox, and a Christmas TV special is in the works as well – so, for those of you with kids, I hope you’re not tired to death of Scrat’s acorn-chasing antics just yet…

  1. First!!!!!

    • Good for you, now you can go and read the blog entry, if haven’t already.

Or perhaps you can go elsewhere, and find other message boards to spam.

There are millions of them, so you can go spread your, cough, “achievement.”

      • Wow, that’s a little much don’t you think? The poor guy was just exited to be the first to comment…

      • Lighten up, would you? Are you the comment police? Did it wound you or ruin your day to see some post “First”?

        • Sorry, guys, it’s just one of my pet peeves.

          • I kind of look at it as a milestone – we get enough comments that someone wants to be “First!”. 8)

    • And what a contribution you have made to this comment page (sarcasm ;))

P.S. Speaking (or a better word… typing) as a “dude of all dudes” (in other words… very, very straight)… I don’t get this Fast and the Furious franchise… there’s no plot. It’s just big explosions with lost of guys on steroids revving their engines and beating the c*** out of each other. Don’t get me wrong… I love cars… especially fast onces but these movies make no sense… it’s basically porn for little dudes (aged 10 – 13) am I right?

      • Heh heh, I’ve been trying to work on my own sarcasm, and by trying to keep it down and out, I’ll hit these stretches where it pours like water. :)

Unfortunately, far too many movies are one-trick ponies. I’d hate to be a fly on the wall when these “products” are greenlit.

I mean, honestly, there’s a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade movie coming up, as well as a movie named after some candy-bar line. THESE are the type of movies that are being greenlit based on the idea alone.

  2. I saw the first Twilight movie with my boyfriend when it was released even though I knew nothing about Twilight. I was overwhelmed. It was orgasmic. When I have a craving for something, I just can’t hold myself back. Robert Pattinson is a wonderful guy, extremely handsome, and has an accent. For all you guys out there, Twilight turns women on. All you have to do is take us to see a Twilight movie to satisfy us. Also, be headstrong. Girls like strong men that aren’t afraid to show their true feelings at times. We need to know you’re reliable, say what you mean, and will always take care of us.

    • Thank you “Tula Contostavlos” for helping us nerds everywhere (sarcasm).

Twilight sucks… it might be nice for you girls… but the thing is, is that you are so overwhelmed by the guys (boys) with no shirts on that you fail to see what a huge piece of f*****g s**t that saga is.

      Anyway… that’s just my opinion 😉

P.S. here is something I don’t get… when a 40 year old man looks at a 19 year old girl and gets “exited” (for lack of a better word) he is considered a pervert, but when a 40 year old woman gets “exited” by a 16 year old boy (for instance Justin Beaver) it’s perfectly fine?

    • But still… thanks for the “help”. Next time my sister brings her friends for a sleep-overr, and they watch twilight (for the 81273456’s time) I will do as you say and be “headstrong” or whatever…

        • Sorry Vic :( (and Tula Contostavlos)
I just really hate that movie. And I just kind of found that comment really funny… with her using words like: “orgasmic” and “craving” to describe a movie!

But yeah… sorry… I’m working on my anger management issues… and I’m trying to use less sarcasm in my life… if you knew me for real… you would know that everything I say is a joke… I have a real dark sense of humor.

But also… (in my mind)… this is kind of what comment pages are for… for people to express what they think and to share that with others… sure my way of doing it is a little harsh but that just makes me one of the 30 million people out there like that.

But still… this is strike 2… so I’ll do my best to behave.

  3. Fast Five is my favorite movie so far this year. So happy it’s doing extremely well. So sorry to Scream 4 for dropping to the bottom of the list, where you really belong :)

  4. 790, you lost the bet; Fast Five made over $40 million. Where’s my money?! 😀

    • Screw the money, where’s my beer 790??

  5. Fast Five was awesome! Sure, it won’t get any Oscars. Lol But it’s a hell of a ride! ;D

  6. Wow, $83.6 million opening weekend, thats the sort olf figures Marvel are after for Thor, Will be interesting to see the percentage drop for Fast Five ion the second weekend and how that impact’s the opening weekend for Thor.

  7. And, something I haven’t seen mentioned, is just how diverse the cast of Fast Five is. There’s really only one White actor among the main characters, Paul Walker. The rest are Black, Asian or Latino. Vin Diesel’s mixed White and Black, among other backgrounds. And Dwayne Johnson is part Samoan, part Black.

What does that say about Hollywood whitewashing. I wonder how the powers that be in Hollywood will spin this, and how they will continue to justify whitewashing practices. NOTE: I’m not talking about casting white actors in general, but whitewashing.

  8. Kahless, can’t I just send you a couple of Disruptor cannons or perhaps a cloak upgrade for your D-7?

Also on the cast being diverse I think its obvious the studio doesn’t want to leave out any of the demographics that are deeply hypnotised by fast cars.

    • Send me the interphasic cloak and it’s a deal, petaQ!!

      • I don’t have any interphasic cloaks hanging around,

Send me your coordinates all beam over Sarah, she s Orion,,, haaaa!!!

        No one has to know,,,

  9. Another sad day for the world. It’s very sad commentary that Fast Five makes anything let alone this much money. Just goes to show the world will just accept any kind of film trash that has action no matter how awful it is.

Paul Walker IMO is the worst actor around today. He doesn’t deserve to breathe IMO he’s doing a great job of ruining film every where just like Micheal Bay except worse.

    • how is it a sad they when the movie gets good review maybe u dont like the others but this one was better

  10. Fast five was excellent and it wasn’t in 3D yay.

  11. Cant wait for Ice Age 4

    • I will never in my life see Ice Age 4,,,

I think your a funny guy Rickster but we could never hang out and see movies. :)

      • wth 790! :(

        you broke me heart…

haha thanks for the compliment though. I have always said that i loveeee animated movies. Those are some of my favorites. I cant picture you liking animated movies or am I wrong!? 😎

        • You haven’t seen a good animation film ’till you have seen Heavy Metal. Get on that one will ya Ricky :)

          • It was in the porn section!

              • lol I need my own place for that :)

  12. Oh come on Rickster, were still on the same side I just don’t like those kids films,,,,

    • I am 16 (today). I love animation… not just the more “kiddy” stuff but also darker stuff. For instance: I like Toy Story, The Avengers EMH (TV series), the stuff on Boomerang (classics) and a lot of the DC and Marvel animated flicks… when I go to my friends and talk about this they laugh at me… I don’t get how some people can’t stand animation… it’s a wonderful genre. My one friends thinks animation is “weird” and says he prefers to watch “real” people. I have another friend who actually gets mocked/beat up at school for watching Disney (although, that’s not surprising). I just don’t understand why people don’t like it? At one point in most people’s lives they have seen animation as a kid and liked it… but unfortunately grew out of a perfectly normal genre. This is a topic that is very debatable and has a wide range.

I recently bought a subscription for “Avengers” comics from Marvel. My father was very skeptical and said that I’m “to old for it” and “it’s for kids”. When my first issue arrived my father wanted to read it (he likes to mock everything that I buy :)) he opened the book… and the first words that came out of his mouth was “wow, quite gory”. Also, if you open any batman comic or watch a batman movie (animated or live action)… you will see it’s quite dark and not meant for kids. My point is, is that people underestimate animation and doesn’t really know it… very judgmental. Not all animation is kids stuff, just look at Japanese Anime… I will never again! It’s horrible! And violent! And it’s confusing!

      • I believe its a frame of mind and how you perceive it. Being Asian I am pretty much indoctrinated with Anime. I would prefer watching Japanese Cartoons (Subbed, not Dubbed) over any of the current fare that Cartoon networks or the majority of American cartoon creators make. But its funny you mentioned getting beat up in school over cartoons. Where I am from the guy/gal with the most complete collection is considered royalty :p

        • Yeah… but see the country I’m from (South Africa) is quite primitive: in the way that people are simple (stupid)… all they do here is play sport… we have no actual “culture”… if you wanna be popular here you gotta play rugby or cricket. If I talk about the contras in Thor they will punch you! …the food is GREAT though.

    • Not now 790 but there must have been a time when you did!

How bout Tom and Jerry no one can hate on that…

      • Actually… I never got that show 😉

      • Ricky, I prefer Marvin the Martian, Taz, Bugs, Duck Dodgers…never got into the cat and mouse thing :)

        • Oh come on Ants! 😀

          • what! All the cartoon characters I named are classics…as well as Tom and Jerry, but, those to were just a little too wimpy for my taste. :)

          • Popeye?

            • Popeye? POPEYE??!! Bugs would totally own Popeye! I don’t care how much spinach he eats, Bugs can defy physics; so there! 😛

  13. Ants I got your beers on ice,,,

Thanks for taking the Heavy Metal words right out of my Blackberry.

I was about to say that.

  14. hey dont hate on pixar! lol
