I don’t generally do box office posts but I thought I would this week for a few reasons.
First, I Am Legend is heading for a monster opening at about $76 million. I wonder how much of that box office number is attributable to the trailer for The Dark Knight and the six minute prologue in the IMAX version?
Second, last week I predicted that The Golden Compass would bring in about $11 million this weekend. It looks like I was a bit optimistic because it’s on track for earning just over $9 million. It’s also earning more overseas than here in the U.S. as I also predicted.

Finally, if you can believe it… Alvin and the Chipmunks brought in $45 million on this, it’s opening weekend. That’s more than 70% higher than Compass did last weekend. Ouch.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Parents are hungry for movies they can bring their under 10 year old kids to without having to worry about inappropriate content or language. If this isn’t evidence of that, I don’t know what is.

I wish I had known about posts like this before that suggestion contest. I like this kind of post and the whole review of the box office openings and such.
I’m just giving you a hard time.
I can try to do something like this on a regular basis of people are interested.

Everyone that I know that saw Ledgend loved it.
= interesting to see if it continues this way next weekend. If it drops it could an indacation of how many went to see the Dark Knight trailer.

Golden Compass wow what a huge bomb. Reminds me of Nicole Kidmans last film. I think it was called “the invasion”. That one also had Daniel Craig. Boy those 2 don’t make for good BO. This film dosnt interest me at all….

Vic this colume would be very cool but only if you did it for Screenrant “type” films. I think if you did it every weekend it wouldn’t be as cool.
I think EVERYONE is stunned at how badly “The Golden Compass” crashed and burned… and I didn’t realize at the time I wrote the article that “I Am Legend” had broken the December box office record, even beating out “Lord of the Rings.”

Going to see I Am Legend at the matinee today. My brother is going with solely to see the Dark Knight trailer.
And, “inappropriate content?” Heaven forbid you expose yourself to an idea you disagree with. The ridiculousness of the people protesting and boycotting this movie is silly.

My inappropriate content comment was directed to movies in general that are supposed to be family films, not Compass in particular.

Release timing of these 2 films says alot. Ones an apocolyptic story and ones a kids film. 2 choices.

The rest of the movies out right now should just expect numbers to get worse. Ledgeng and Alvin are going to rule prob thru the holidays.

I’m definitely hanging to see I am Legend, but it doesn’t come out over here for a while yet. Still, when it does, I’ll be happy to add to its world wide takings

We have it available (Im in Melbourne) but I have regular old DSL. If I may ask…any reason for the question? Just seemed a bit out of place is all :S
