Last week I wrote about The Karate Kid remake and one of our longtime readers made the comment that Screen Rant seems to be warming up to the idea of Hollywood doing remakes. My response – if we didn’t follow remakes then we would run out of things to right about very quickly. It’s true though, the amount of remakes coming from Hollywood lately is mind-numbing. Up next on the remake conveyor belt is Weekend at Bernie’s.
Back in 1989, when Arsenio Hall became a late night talk show host, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hit it big and Rob Lowe was caught on tape with an underage girl, one movie quietly opened in theaters and became wildly popular – Weekend at Bernie’s. The story followed Larry (Andrew McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman) as they get invited to their boss Bernie Lomax’s (Terry Kiser) extravagant island home for the weekend. They assume it’s a “thank you” for finding an error in the accounting books, but it’s actually a way for Bernie and his mob associates to “deal” with Larry and Richard.
Instead, Bernie ends up dead as soon as they oblivious pair arrives at the island and the rest of the movie is spent with them trying to convince all of Bernie’s friends and neighbors that Bernie is still alive. Great hilarity ensues as Bernie throws parties, plays games and even hooks up with a young college co-ed.
Now Gladden Entertainment, the original studio behind the film, is dusting off Bernie and bringing him back to life for a Weekend at Bernie’s remake. It was just a couple of weeks ago that Gladden announced it would be remaking its other popular film, Mannequin, which oddly enough also starred Andrew McCarthy. I have a feeling, though, that neither McCarthy nor Silverman will return to reprise their roles. Instead, a couple of young up-and-comers will most likely fill their shoes. My suggestion – James Roday and Dule Hill from the popular USA show, Psych.

The two guys have plenty of chemistry together, along with the comedic chops to make a remake of Weekend at Bernie’s almost enjoyable. But who would play Bernie? Moviehole suggests that Burt Reynolds would fit the role nicely, and that is a pretty good suggestion, but I’m wondering if Reynolds would be up for playing a role where he is dead and limp 80% of the movie? Even though it’s a title role, I can’t see ol’ Burt agreeing to sit there with little to no speaking parts.
What do you think (besides about remakes being a bad idea) about having another go at Weekend at Bernie’s and who would you suggest for the roles of Larry, Richard and Bernie?
No release date of Weekend at Bernie’s because the film is still in development.

ridiculous
Larry: Paul Rudd
Richard:Zach Galifianakis
Bernie:Alec baldwin
OMG … I was just thinking last week that this movie may be next in line for a reboot/remake/reimagining. I should've entered into the remake pool (if only there was one).
Is there a reason why Hollywood is remaking a lot of the movies that came out when I was still in High School? Weren't they good enough then to be timeless now? Anyway, if they remake it they better do a good job.
that is so stupid, the movie is perfect at it is. Stupid hollywood !
That is the only way I'd see this.
Larry: Paul Young
Richard: Kofi Outlaw
Bernie: Vic
Money.
Up next on the remake list: Better Off Dead….just watch. Weekend at Bernie's is a true classic that really doesn't need to be updated. They can only ruin it.
This is a bad idea. Nearly as bad as your editing.
I'm having comment remorse. Sorry about that last, Paul. I have no tact sometimes. There needs to be a dang delete button around here.
LOL Crom…click Moderate then you can edit or delete your comment, but no worries. What part of my story needed editing? I did write this one in Word so there shouldn't have been any issues…plus our stories go through Kofi, Vic or Rob K before being posted
Edit: Looking back, I'm wondering if only I have the moderate option because I'm a moderator? Duh!
You know what cracks me up every time I think about it is to get a serious player like Clint Eastwood to play Bernie. Talk about a coup…
Ugh. No.
I hope this is as successful as the last Crocodile Dundee movie.
This is not worth a remake.
My nomination for Bernie would be Christopher Walken. He's the only one that could get me excited about this movie. As for the two other guys they'll probably cast Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
YES!!!
but bernie must look goofy
i think its great absolutely, i was feeling bad that some of these actors, got older and their isn't anything exciting anymore cause they grew up all the movies and fence work was taken and over with, its a great idea to reunite with the past, when the present sucks

paul rud -Richard
larry-James Roday
bernie- robert downey jr
Larry: Zach Braff
Richard: Donald Faison
Bernie: Ken Jenkins
Larry: Zac Effron (think his character from from New Year’s Eve with a little more slackeresque qualities)
Richard: I can see this going in several directions. We could either keep the would-be suburban, spoon-fed white boy and go with someone like Jesse Eisenberg or Andrew Garfield (and I’m gonna tell you right now that I would love either of them in this role) or change it up a bit, and go with someone like Aziz Ansari. I think it would be cool to update Richard with a little ethnic flare. Get into his backstory more, on how overbearing his Indian parents are (possible dad could be Russell Peters?) I think that would spice things up a bit.
Bernie: Robert Downey Jr. (Would be PERFECT for this… I can see him making the smirk already! He would be a great Bernie alive, and an even better dead Bernie.)
Gwen: Anna Kendrick or… yeah, no. Anna Kendrick. (because she’s freaking adorable. And also, has a comedic bone enough to go with this type of story)
Hitman: Anton Yelchin (I think it would be cool to go with a little more Russian Mafia direction, rather than the overly-tired “Italian Mob” cliché. I think he’s got the comedic chops to pull of a high-strung, “why won’t you die?!” kind of character, with some Russian flare. Maybe make him a newcomer, trying to impress the boss-man with his first hit?)
