The last time The CW tried to spin off Supernatural, things didn't go too well. Entitled Bloodlines, the proposed spinoff was teased via a backdoor pilot that aired as part of Supernatural season 9, and what resulted is often cited as one of the worst episodes in the history of the long-running series. Still, The CW seems resolved to make an SPN spinoff work and is pressing forward with plans for a Wayward Sisters show.

Built around popular recurring character Sheriff Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes), Wayward Sisters focuses on a group of women who end up forming a makeshift family after various encounters with otherworldly forces leave them otherwise alone in the world. Wayward Sisters is expected to debut via its own backdoor pilot episode during Supernatural's upcoming season 13, an idea we've previously endorsed, and all involved presumably hope it goes over much better than Bloodlines.

To that end, Deadline reports that the four leads of the series are exactly who most SPN fans had been hoping for. In addition to Jody Mills, Wayward Sisters will star Claire Novak (Kathryn Newton), Alex Jones (Katherine Ramdeen), and Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Briana Buckmaster). Claire is, of course, the daughter of Castiel's human vessel, while Alex was rescued from the control of a vampire nest that was using her as bait. Both teenagers have been living with Jody as foster daughters. Donna was introduced to Jody via mutual friends Sam and Dean, and is now a close friend to the fellow sheriff.

In a bit of a surprise, the titular Wayward Sisters will not be comprised solely of the above quartet of returning Supernatural characters. Rounding out the lead quintet will be new character Patience Turner, played by Clark Backo (Designated Survivor). Patience joins the group after her sudden development of powerful psychic abilities leads to her being hunted by evil forces who wish to use her gifts for their own ends.

Despite being a new character, Patience is being tied into the existing SPN mythology, via her estranged grandmother Missouri Moseley (Loretta Devine). Patience inherited her psychic abilities from Missouri, a one-off character from way back in season 1. Devine is set to return as Moseley for an episode in season 13, presumably the episode that serves as the Wayward Sisters backdoor pilot, although the Deadline report doesn't specify that.

The CW is no stranger to spinoffs, especially recently with its DC shows The Flash and DC's Legends of Tomorrow spinning out of Arrow (and Supergirl spinning into it). There's no telling how long Wayward Sisters will last, but the current trend (and long-running SPN fandom) suggests it might have some staying power.

Supernatural season 13 premieres October 12 on The CW.
