The upcoming third season of Twin Peaks is still some way off, so Fox is stepping up to help satiate fans of neo-noir detective stories set in small towns with Wayward Pines. The mystery thriller tells the tale of a Secret Service agent (Matt Dillon) who is involved in a car accident while attempting to locate two missing federal agents in small-town Idaho – and subsequently, finds himself trapped in a town where all is not quite as it seems.
The first trailer for Wayward Pines gave a bit too much away about the town, but luckily a new trailer for the Fox miniseries delivers all of the intrigue with fewer spoilers. The cast also includes Juliette Lewis, Toby Jones, Melissa Leo, Shannyn Sossaman, Carla Gugino, and Terrence Howard as the enigmatic Sheriff Pope. Not a bad line-up.
This trailer mainly tries to sell the horror aspects of Wayward Pines, from ambiguous shots of characters being spattered with blood to the Saw-esque scenario of Agent Ethan Burke being called up and instructed to murder the man sitting in front of him. Presumably some kind of horrible fate awaits him if he refuses to carry out the task – unless the person on the other end of the phone is just really, really hoping that Ethan isn’t going to ask, “Why should I?”
The name most commonly associated with Wayward Pines, purely because it’s the name most likely to be familiar to audiences, is M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan produced Wayward Pines and directed one of the episodes, but those who have lost confidence in Shyamalan’s work shouldn’t let this deter them. The creator of the show is actually Chad Hodge (The Playboy Club) and the series is based on the book ‘Pines’ by writer Blake Crouch.
When it comes to mystery shows like this, there’s a roughly equal chance that the explanation will be A) secret government experiments, B) everybody’s dead and this is Purgatory or C) aliens. But if Lost taught us anything, it’s that finding out the truth isn’t nearly as fun as enjoying the mind-bending plot twists and turns along the way.
Wayward Pines premieres on Thursday 14th May 2015 @9/8c on Fox.
