Alan Moore’s Watchmen, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
These three publications helped to increase the genre to a more adult level of literature, and it introduced how graphic novels could be used as a form of literature that truly differs from “child-oriented comic books and they received a lot of media attention which never really had been seen before in a genre generally believed to be nothing more than children’s entertainment.

Vic you may or maynot agree with me on this…here goes..

The Watchmen changed everything in the comic book industry by showing R-themed “comic books” could be viewed as true art and classic literature at the same time. It revolutionized the super-hero genre removing it from it’s pulp roots and taking it into the adult mainstream.

I don’t think movies like Hancock and Nolan’s take on Batman could have been possible without the Watchmen..

I don’t know if you would agree with me on this but I think The Watchmen had the single largest influence on the comic book industry in that it let companies see that adult themed R rated comics could sell and be considered a true art form as well as classic literature..

I really don’t think that movies like Hancock and the Nolans new take on Batman could have been possible if Watchmen hadn’t been written..It really revolutionized the comic book “superhero” genre by bringing it to mainstream audiences…My Mom read it and thought it was FANTASTIC..She actually wants to see the movie although it’s been 20 years since she read it…

I thought the graphic novel I read of the Watchmen was THE MOST amazing and riveting story of “superheros” that I have ever read..The immediate tone it starts out with along with the tension produced throughout the series. From placing heroes that were experiencing the human condition to the anti-veneration of those same heroes to it’s social commentary on the Vietnam War and the Civil rights movement, apocalyptic themes and conspiracy theory and human morality..and I still haven’t come close to hitting all the themes this story touched on.. I mean this HAD IT ALL!!

If you haven’t read it please go get a copy and read it!! It was voted one of the 100 best works of fiction of the 20th century for cripes sake!!It is also relevant to events in the world today with its fatalism themes, Keen Act (RFID anyone?) and theme of megalomania…You won’t be disappointed…A Definitive Masterpiece!!!
