2019's DC film Joker has been re-created as a retro Sierra adventure game by Penney Pixels. One of the most polarizing movies of last year, Joker recently won two Oscars at the Academy Awards and was nominated for another nine, with many of the film's more adamant fans saying it should have taken home more than it did. Despite the controversy surrounding Joker's subject matter, it has gone on to do remarkably well at the box office, and due to its smaller-than-normal budget for a "superhero" movie Joker is now the most profitable comic book film of all time.

There was a time when such success for a popular film franchise could almost guarantee a video game tie-in of some nature, be it a platformer, beat-em-up side-scroller, or adventure title. Many players still have fond memories of games like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, an adventure title created and published by LucasArts in 1992, as well as the frustratingly-difficult SNES versions of Disney's Aladdin and The Lion KingWhile one of the most popular adventure game creators, Sierra On-Line, never pushed as hard into licensed products as some of their contemporaries did, deciding instead to focus on their own IPs such as King's Quest and Space Quest, one could easily imagine how such a crossover could look.

Interested fans need not imagine, however, because creator Penney Pixels has released a classic Sierra version of the Joker movie on YouTube recently as part of their ongoing Fictional Bad Games series. Clocking in at around seven minutes, the video (which is embedded below) shows a player attempting to navigate what could very easily be a 1980's video game version of the occasionally hallucinatory Joker movie, complete with areas where the programmers should have really put a little bit more effort into the text parsing system. Check it out below:

A lot of effort was clearly put into this entry in the Fictional Bad Games series, as the video above shows a variety of locations and character ripped directly from DC's recent film and recreated in all their retro glory. Iconic scenes, such as the steps which spurred many fans to travel to Joker's actual shooting location, Robert De Niro's talk show, and the outside of Wayne Manor are all included. Complete with keyboard clicking noises and occasional typos, this fake adventure game video is enough to make any fan of titles like Leisure Suit Larry and Sea Quest wish movie tie-in projects like these were still popular.

This isn't the only movie Penney Pixels has turned into a retro game for their Fictional Bad Games series. Others include Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Creed, and Mamma Mia!, the last of which was recreated as a Mario Kart-style racing game. Interested players should check out their channel to see what comic book movies could be remade as retro video games in the future, although it's likely none of them will offer something as creepy as Joaquin Phoenix's pixelated Joker face.
