December is already set to be a great month for movies this year: Black Swan, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Tempest, True Grit and, one of our Most Anticipated Films of 2010, Tron: Legacy. After watching the trailer for the fantasy action film The Warrior’s Way, it too can be added to the list of great looking films coming in December.

Don’t be surprised if this is the first time you’ve heard about The Warrior’s Way; it's been flying under the radar. The Warrior’s Way – which I’m calling a "Ninja Western" - was written and directed by Sngmoo Lee and produced by Barrie M. Osborne (Lord of the Rings), Jooick Lee (Seven Swords) and Michael Peyser (Hackers).

The Warrior's Way, a visually-stunning modern martial arts western starring Korean actor Dong-gun Jang who plays an Asian warrior assassin forced to hide in a small town in the American Badlands. Rounding out the ensemble cast is Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns), Oscar(R)-winner Geoffrey Rush (Shine), Danny Huston (The Kingdom), and Tony Cox (The Hustle). The film is being distributed by Rogue Media, the same company behind the upcoming alien invasion film Skyline. If the trailer below is any indication, then The Warrior’s Way should be a very entertaining film.

The action in The Warrior’s Way looks like over-the-top thrilling fun while the crisp and over-saturated colors make every scene beautiful. A lot of people aren’t fans of the “wire-fu” style the Hong Kong movie industry made so popular, but when the technique is done properly, it can be very impressive.

Dong-gun Jang has a huge international following from his previous Korean films, Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of the Caribbean 4) has a way of owning whatever character he plays, and Tony Cox (Bad Santa) is always great comedic relief. However, judging from the trailer, Kate Bosworth (Blue Crush) could end up being the weak link in the cast. Her action scenes feel forced, the way she carries herself as an old west female doesn't really work and that “southern” accent she’s using is as bad as Harrison Ford’s Russian accent in K-19: Widowmaker.

This movie probably won't break a lot of box office records because fantasy action films are an acquired taste - but for fans of the genre it may suffice. The story for The Warrior’s Way reminds me of last year’s Ninja Assassin - the student betrays the master then runs to hide in America while his fellow ninjas chase him down leading to a showdown between student and master. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because Ninja Assassin worked pretty well.

While doing some research on The Warrior’s Way, I noticed a lot of people trying to figure out the name of the song featured at the end of the trailer. I recognize it because I own the album - the band is Family Force 5 and the song is titled "Kountry Gentleman".

The Warrior’s Way opens December 3, 2010.
