The mega-successful and critically acclaimed Dark Knight had hardly hit theaters last year and already there was high anticipation (at least in the geek/online movie circles) for Batman 3. We have heard rumor after rumor after rumor about the third installment, including everything from Christopher Nolan not returning to Eddie Murphy playing The Riddler (I would have given up on life if that latter one was true), all turning out to have a distinctive lack of truth to them.
One of the biggest desires of Batman fans is that Nolan comes back to direct, since he did such a good job with the last two Bat-films, breathing fresh life into an effectively dead franchise with Batman Begins and knocking just about everyone’s socks off with The Dark Knight. But will he come back to direct the third? Well, we’re still not sure, but “a solid and longtime source” over at the usually reliable Batman-On-Film says that Warner Bros. will finalize plans for Batman 3 in January of next year.
BOF notes that it’s not certain that there will be an actual official announcement, but they don’t seen any sense in keeping some key points a secret. The main pusher on this is Nolan’s Inception, which hits theaters next July. Next January is about the time the marketing craze will start for Inception (the rumored $200 million budget demands nothing less, I think) and if Nolan is on-board, I don’t see why they wouldn’t announce him before Inception’s marketing starts. He’ll be getting asked Batman questions relentlessly during that time, so it makes sense for WB to announce their plans either way (“to direct or not to direct, that is the question…”
).
BOF‘s source also points out the obvious in that WB will be going ahead with Batman 3 with or without Nolan at the helm. They’re apparently operating on the assumption that he will return to do another, but aren’t setting all their plans on stone to coincide with his return. Basically, they’ll have to workout everything they can around Nolan’s questionable involvement as director, before moving ahead with or without him when the time comes to make that decision.

I know I’m just one of many fans to say this, but I really, REALLY hope Nolan returns to direct Batman 3. What he did with Batman Begins was nothing short of a miracle, and he did the unthinkable after that and topped Begins with The Dark Knight. I know the performance of Heath Ledger as The Joker is what most people talk about when they discuss TDK, but it flat-out would not have been as good as it was if Nolan hadn’t directed it. I personally would like to see him return to direct one more, cap off his input to the franchise/character with a trilogy, and move on after that and let someone else have a crack at it. But that’s just me.
Do you expect to see an announcement from Warner Bros. early next year of their plans for Batman 3, including whether Nolan will direct or not? It’s probably a silly question with an obvious answer, but would you like to see Nolan return? If by any chance the answer is no, who would you like to see direct instead?
And of course, it’s never to early to start wondering: What will Batman 3 be about?
We’ll keep you informed on the validity of WB’s supposed planned Batman announcement. Stay tuned.
Inception hit theaters on July 16th, 2010.

“but it flat-out would not have been as good as it was if Nolan hadn’t directed it” I think that statement says it all! Bravo! Mr. Nolan HAS to return and the logistics involved with Inception….well, it just makes perfect sense. January is right around the corner.
Glad to see a batman thread, it’s been a while.
Dr. Sam
post your batman story here for everyone.
Here’s my take.
Batman/Bruce- Christian Bale…
Jim Gordon- Gary Oldman…
Lucius Fox- Morgan Freeman…
Alfred- Michael Caine…
Oliver Queen- Kiefer Sutherland…
The Riddler/Edward Nigma- Jeff Goldblum…
Victor Freeze- Patrick Stewart…
Talia- Rhona Mitra…
Dick Grayson- Jensen Aclkes…
Gotham police are hunting Batman, they have an opening confrontation on a huge bridge over the river, Batman is there trying to round up a criminal gang and must climb around the bridge to evade capture, he ends up taking a dive into the river. The press claim the Batman perished.
There is a new lunatic in town, a man obsessed with puzzles and questions, he is a killer who places innocent victims in bizarre torture devices and deadly games from which they must solve his riddles to escape. Few manage to survive.
Bruce Wayne is facing his own crisis, a business rival Oliver Queen has arrived from Star City and he wants to buy Wayne Enterprises diminishing stock. But he will settle for partnering with Bruce on a new medical project, Queen has brought his scientific advisor Victor Freeze. His research is into cryogenics, trying to put a stop on death to allow doctors more time to save lives. Bruce thinks Freeze’s research is potentially dangerous, but will consider the proposal because the company needs the funding, because he has spent so much money on Batman projects. Queen is there with his girlfriend Talia, they go to dinner with Bruce later that night.
The press have named the new killer, The Riddler, now he has taken and killed several police officers, one of which was a close friend of Commissioner Gordon.
Gordon is exhausted, from having to lead a city wide manhunt after his trusted friend Batman, and dealing with normal criminals, as well as the emergence of The Riddler. The corruption element hasn’t exactly gone away either. Gordon has taken to drinking heavily, at the possible cost of his family.
Bruce had heard rumours about The Riddler and decides to go undercover, he disguises himself and heads to a bar where several victims have disappeared. There is a man in the corner doing magic tricks with illusions and the like, he is charming and unstable, Bruce watches on as this man is attacked by an unhappy viewer of the tricks. The attacker ends up stabbed through the shoulder by a knife with a ticking clock on the handle, if the attacker fails to answer the questions put to him in time the knife will explode. Bruce is about to intervene when a man named Dick Grayson, maybe ten years younger than Bruce, steps in and knocks the man aside, and hurls the knife out the door. It doesn’t explode, but by the time everyone has realised this The Riddler has escaped. Bruce tries to talk to Dick, but Dick wants to leave. He is an aggressive and untamed young man with a violent streak.
When Bruce returns to his penthouse, as the manor is almost finished construction, he and Alfred investigate both The Riddler and Dick, using video footage Bruce secretly filmed in the bar. They quickly learn the identity of the new villain; Edward Nigma. Bruce is shocked to find he used to employ Nigma, and heads to Lucius Fox for answers, leaving Alfred to investigate the mystery of Dick Grayson.
Fox explains Nigma was fired for his dangerous ideas concerning mind control and the effects of illusions on the human brain, Nigma was also a genius.
Fox: Like all great men Nigma towed the line between insanity and genius.
Bruce: I know something about towing the line.
Fox: Problem is Nigma crossed the line.
He shows Bruce footage of Nigma using a riddle to hypnotise a group of people and convince them to start attacking each other. Fox then informs his new vehicle is ready at the hanger, but for testing only.
We learn about Dick’s troubled past, he ran away after his parents were killed during a circus stunt gone wrong, he has repeatedly been in trouble with the law. Alfred senses the parallels between Bruce and Dick, but wisely says nothing.
Batman shadows Dick, believing his interrupting Nigma makes him a valid target. Dick realises he is being followed and confronts Batman, they have a brief scuffle. Batman eventually convinces Dick to help him by allowing Nigma to take him. This doesn’t quite go to plan, Nigma manages to inject Batman with a freezing compound that completely immobilises and almost kills the caped crusader.
The Riddler: By the way, I may have told the fine Gotham PD where you are, you can just chill out and wait for them.
The police arrive, and Gordon barely manages to get Batman back to safety.
Bruce realises this compound can only have come from Victor Freeze, he finds Queen at the hospital. A few hours earlier, The Riddler broke into Queen’s temporary lab at Wayne Enterprises, stealing all of the research, as well as killing a female assistant who happened to be Freeze’s wife. Freeze has been mortally wounded, exposed to all of his own experiments. His body is now incapable of creating its own body heat, his skin is a pale white blue colour, his retinas are damaged so he must wear red goggles over his eyes for protection. Bruce blames Queen, who should have protected him instead of being out partying.
Batman and Gordon must find Dick before his time runs out, however this becomes more complicated when they discover Fox has also gone missing. Nigma wants revenge on the person he believes ruined his life, he send Bruce a clue that leads back to the under re construction Wayne Manor.
Batman enters the site, discovering The Riddler has been busy laying traps and games, he manages to survive relatively unscathed but finds neither Fox or The Riddler. He does find Dick inside a machine, they manage to work out how to escape together. Dick wants to help, and reluctantly Batman sends him off with Gordon to help evacuate Wayne Tower, where Nigma and Foz are located. Nigma plans on using a fuel cell from Freeze’s research to destroy the building.
Batman takes his new Batwing, and flies to the top of the Tower.
Alfred: Do you actually know how to fly that contraption Mr Wayne.
Bruce: You know what they say Alfred, life is a learning curve.
The Batwing hovers by the roof, Batman tries to talk The Riddler down, but it doesn’t work. He throws Fox off the side but Batman saves him. Fox gets away in the Batwing, Batman is now face to face with The Riddler and his bomb. They fight briefly and Dick arrives just in time to get in the way, Batman obviously defeats him but learns of a greater threat, The Riddler was helped by Talia, Queens girlfriend who is in fact Ra’s Al Ghul’s daughter. Batman takes Nigma to Arkham, avoiding the cell on his right that echoes in maniacal laughter, he rushes to find the woman. Talia has knocked Queen out and has disappeared.
Bruce takes Dick into his family, and they return to the Wayne Manor when it is completed. Batman is no longer an enemy of the city after stopping The Riddler, but Bruce learns from Queen that Victor Freeze has vanished from hospital. Fox retires, and Gordon is determined to kick the drink. There is just the tiniest bit of hope in Gotham for all.
And Talia returns to her secret hideout, revealing her father Ra’s Al Ghul, while hideously injured is still alive.
End.
I sure hope Nolan returns, for the same reasons listed in this article; to finish off his trilogy. He started it the right way, and may as well end it the right way.
Will be it as good as The Dark Knight? That’s questionable. The movie certainly raised the bar for future superhero movies (can you really picture someone making another Spider-Man 3 or Fantastic Four movie and actually making a decent amount of money off of it?). As long as it has a good story, I’m fine with whatever they dish out. As long as there are no cheesy villains. I’d suggest they should use The Riddler or something, but I thought I remembered reading a couple of years ago that David S. Goyer didn’t really want to use villains that had been done before, which is understandable.
I just want Warner Brothers to announce something. So hopefully they actually will do this in January. If so, I am greatly looking forward to it… and hope to God that Nolan is actually back one last time.
@DrSamBeckett:
Great summary! It is long for a post but you can’t do something like this justice and do it right in just a few sentences. When I forst started reading I had bad flashbacks of the last Batman w/RIddler flick and how something that had great potential got really screwed but I kept reading and was not dissapointed. You turned it into something very intriguing.
I do have to say though that I think you may have too many charcters at play in this story. A big part of what caused Batman Begins & TDK to succeed and what caused the prior Batman films to fail was the volumne of characters, namely the villians. Too many bad guys or good guys makes for a bad or flawed story when dealing within the context of a 2 to 2.5 hour film.
With the exception of those characters in the last film (TDK) drop all the new ones except for the Riddler, Victor Freeze (as a scientist working for Queen) and Queen. Keep Victor as a future possible candidate by not taking him past the point of being in some event that causes his own bodies destruction; leave that to be followed up in another sequel.
I also would suggest not taking Queens character pass the playboy whos life is in question and ready for some kind of change. This way the only super heros or villians are Batman and The Ridller. I’d also drop Dickj Grayson but only because I don’t see Bale’s/Nolans Batman take woirking well with any kind of side kick or partner.
The only other change in a great story you’ve outlined would be with casting of the Riddler. I realize this will come as shocking to many but I believe an actor destined to be a super villina more memorable then Heath Ledger is….
John Travolta. I know he is not associated with the villina type in general and when he is it is often to less then sucessful films like BATTLEFIELD EARTH and THE PUNISHER but he is none the less incredible in that kind of role. If you;ve ever seen him in SWORDFISH or more recently the remake of THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 you can see that when allowed to play the role of a mentally off bad guy, Travolta is not only great but unique.
Re-imagine the Edward Nigma / Riddler role as being portrayed by Travolta. Also change the perception of Ngma from being this unpopular geeky guy to a ghood looking and almost celeberty like figure in Gotham. In this take Nigma is a suave, intelligent ladies man who has a dark secret. When others are not around, Edwards real self leaks thru as the OCD who can’t seem to getaway from the chase of the puzzle.
Ever since he can remeber Edwards intelligence has served to beenfit hi and tourture him. WHile he can brilliantly solve puzzles he finds himslef unable to stop the persuit of said puzzles with one exception; his life long love, Mrs Nigma. She keeps him in check allowing for his dark side to be kept in check so he can function normally.
Within your story, there is an accident that takes the live of his wife and without anyone else to serve as a support mechanism, Edware slips into madness untill the point wher an alternate personality emerges, one that calls itself The Riddler.
So is that the tie in with Mr. Reese? Mr. Reese’s real name is Nigma?
Batman whitout Nolan will be an EPIC FAIL !
BlueCollarCritic
thanks for the positive comment
The reason I put Dick Grayson in the story was to give Bruce a sense of hope. That would be the key theme to my story, hope. My biggest critisism of TDK was the bleakness of the story. I’m not saying I want wise cracking batman, but some light in the darkness.
And, I do see what you mean about too many characters, but there are just as many in Batman Begins.
That’s how I would do it anyway. I’m sure lots of others disagree.
I have a idea for the 3rd Batman that I thought up not too long ago.
As for villains, I think that they should use The Joker, The Riddler and The Penguin. As for The Joker, I think they should recast and use a shorter haired version which is making Heath Ledgers version as kind of a beginning. And honestly, I think Ben Foster would make a great Joker.
As for the story, I haven’t thought up much. But, it would begin in Arkum. A therapist is entering the building to talk to The Joker. (Cause I suppose that is what would normally happen). He tells the guard his name is Edward Nigma (Which is an alias of The Riddlers). When he gets in the room with The Joker, he acts like a real shrink. Then, they start on the topic of Batman and The Riddler confesses that he is there because he has a plan to break him out. Right then and there, you here gunshots and The Penguin enters the room.
Now, this story isn’t too far fetched because in the past comics many of the popular villains have helped each other out. Maybe we could even say we hear gunshots and screaming and The Penguin and Killer Croc waltz in.
I know that Christopher Nolan would probably not even consider this idea. But, think about it. It is The Joker. And Heath’s performance gave a great back story to The Joker. Now I think they should unleash him.
They could provide a huge backstory to make this work easily. And this could be the big bang! that Christopher Nolan can retire from Gotham City with. It’s kind of like how I think Sam Raimi should bring in the Sinister Six for Spider-Man 4.
They should go all out. But, have a good story, good script and great actors!
What do you think?
(As for casting: The Joker – Ben Foster, The Riddler – Giovanni Ribsi, The Penguin – Phillip Seymour Hoffman and if they were to use Clayface at all – Jon Hamm from Mad Men)
Batman 3 needs Nolan. I’d be really surprised if Nolan didn’t come back because of the way he recreated the Batman universe into a multibillion dollar franchise.
@DrSamBeckett..
I like your synopsis and it’s a pretty good story. Kudos to you on thinking the whole storyline through. I’m not crazy about Dick Grayson being in it, but I see where you’re coming from with the hope angle. I also think that Jeff Goldblum would be AWESOME as The Riddler. Good idea there. (I also think that the John Travolta idea by BlueCollarCritic is terrible.) Keifer is a decent choice as Oliver, but I think he might be a little too weathered now to play a playboy type of character. I could be wrong though because RDJ pulls it off perfectly in Iron Man and I thought he was washed up. This is out of left field, but I think Brad Pitt would make a GREAT Oliver Queen. Probably won’t happen, though, can you imagine the egos on THAT set?
I just hope that the next Batman movie is as good as the last 2. Personally, I liked Batman Begins more than The Dark Knight, so if the new film falls somewhere in between them, it’ll be good with me.
Ledger would have had nothing to work with if Nolan hadn’t imbued his vision into the franchise. The only reason Bale and Ledger signed on was because of Nolan’s vision of where the franchise was to go.
Nolan NEEDS to return. He needs to complete his vision and create the first truly great comic book trilogy.
We can’t go back to cookie cutter BS after The Dark Knight. Nolan reinvented the franchise with Begins and made a superior film that destroyed expectations with The Dark Knight. If Nolan doesn’t return, I’d be very worried about the future of the franchise in the hands of another director.
Oh, and minimize Goyer’s role, he can’t help but cheese things up. Jonah needs to have an expanded role.
I prefer Batman Begins to TDK, I think Nolan is a good director but he is too technical and clinical in my estimation. If he didn’t return, the world wouldn’t end for me. Also Bale annoyed me in TDK, recast the role, Clive Owen would do a good job.
Nolan needs to return! I hope he does. He reignited the franchise with Batman Begins and blew it away with The Dark Knight. I agree with reducing Goyer, his dialogue is so cheesy. I just want Nolan to come back and complete a trilogy!
I dont want Nolan. He said he doesnt want Robin in the movie.
I want a director that will have Robin in the movie.
@ Dr. Sam
Dude, your cast had me intrigued up until I read you not only had Dick Grayson, but you had cast Jensen Ackles? Party foul.
Nolan must return. Complete his trilogy, then move on to making wonderful non-related comic films. He has left his impression. Hopefully future comic films will take notes that just because it is a comic movie, doesn’t mean it can lack in quality and not just be a great movie. I hope that WB gets its stuff straight and starts to deliver on its characters we really wanna see onscreen, but doesn’t go overboard and start cranking out droll comic movies from unrecognizable characters at a mile a minute just to cash in on the trend.
@ Dr.SamBeckett
You have valid points in your posts i read recently. I pretty much felt like i enjoyed Batman Begins little more, or just the same as the TDK. Mainly because Batman begins for the first time shown us Batman’s true origin, to his traveling the world for training to become Batman, and to seeing villains mainly Ra’s Al Ghoul and Scarecrow etc. And i loved the Batmobile chase. Back on the issue, another thing you mentioned was Dick Grayson being in the franchise. What you said reminded me of what Bruce Timm said about Robin. He mentioned how you can have Batman be alone for only so long till you add Robin in there somewhere. Robin lost his parents just as Bruce Wayne did, and Robin is pretty much there to make sure Batman doesnt lose himself in the darkness. Remember what Harvey Dent was talkin about in the TDK, of how Batman might want a successor to take up the mantle because they all thought if someone like Batman works outside the law, they can go as far to be a hero or live as a hero long enough to become the villain. I forget the exact words used in the film. With that said, it would be easy to include Robin. Maybe introduce Dick Grayson as just Dick Grayson and have him become Robin in the next film. Another thing Bruce Timm said about Robin was for younger fans who love Batman but couldnt see themselves being as good. But with Robin its easier for people to put themselves in those shoes and try to help Batman solve Problems such as riddles as he did in Batman: TAS. It can all work out when its done a right way.
@ James
I hear ya. Id Like to see Robin in the franchise again, and have his Parents be killed by Tony Zucco and have Batman bring him to justice somewhere in the film.
I think that a Batman 3 can and should be done, but it needs to be with Chris Nolan directing and Christian Bale starring. I can understand that Heath Ledger’s death has messed up the production and that the Joker was supposed to come back, but the Joker character is not necessarily needed for this third movie. Even though Heath Ledger did a one of a kind job, the Joker should be recast, since the character and the actor portraying him should be separate. But if they wont do that and cant do their original idea for Batman 3, other ideas can work, such as this one right here……….PLEASE HAVE CHRIS NOLAN AND CHRISTIAN BALE READ THIS!!!
It has been about six months to a year since the events of the Dark Knight has passed. The Joker has been locked away in Arkham, Two Face is dead, and Batman is hated by the public for the supposed murders he committed, while Gotham is a bad as it has ever been. But some people have come to believe in the name of Batman and have also decided to fight the war on crime in Gotham City, just as ordinary every day citizens are trying to do what Batman did. One in particular is Catwoman, a woman who uses a cat as her symbol of justice, law, and order, and who copies Batman as a vigilante trying to stop crime in the midst of Batman’s absence and actually is cleaning up Gotham. Bruce Wayne at this time has become a recluse since the events of the Dark Knight, personally blaming himself for the deaths of Rachael Dawes and Harvey Dent and the hands of the madman, the Joker. He has become a drunkard and keeps himself locked in Wayne Manor fighting through his inner demons and pain that comes to him every day. He has given up on being a hero, believing that he has only made things worse for himself and for Gotham City and that trying to be Batman was a foolish crusade. In addition to this, Wayne Enterprises is being bought and taken over by Cobblepot Enterprises, due to the recent 2008 failing economy in America, and is headed by a man known as Oswald Cobblepot and in some circles, is known as the Penguin due to his ugly and overweight appearance. Cobblepot has also been working behind the shadows to take over as the head crimeboss of Gotham City, since Carmine Falcone is still in Arkham Asylum, and the remaining crime bosses, such as Gambol, the Chechen, and Sal Maroni were killed off in the Dark Knight by the Joker and Two-Face. While this is going on, a mysterious criminal known as the Riddler has come on the scene and is trying to cause chaos in Gotham and bring about its ultimate destruction. What is later revealed in flashback sequences and through what is told by the Riddler, he was a simple computer programmer known as Edward Nygma, who unfortunately lost his job during the economic crisis of 2008 and was about to lose his home due to back payments, as well as trying to pay medical bills for his sick wife, who was unfortunately dying of an inoperable brain tumor. This led him to join a gang, who was going to rob a bank, so he could get money and save what little of a life he had left. Unfortunately during the robbery, Batman had come on the scene and stopped the bad guys including Nygma, who tragically broke his legs in the ensuing chaos and was sent to jail. All in all he became a crippled man with metal rods placed in his legs for support and leading him to use his well known cane and experiencing every day unending pain as a result. He also lost his house and his wife to her cancer in the process. He has since blamed Batman for what happened and vowed to get revenge on him, whatever the cost. Fast forward to the present, he took up the mantle of the Riddler and is trying to draw Batman out of his seclusion, so he can have his revenge and kill him. He does this by kidnapping various police officers and local government officials, and subjecting them to various traps of excruciating pain and eventual death if they cannot solve his insane riddles placed before them, such as (who is the dark knight) and (how can I find the batman). He also asks these riddles and others on Batman in newspapers and has the occasional tendency to blow up various buildings and such by trying to get people to give information or give up Batman if they are connected to them. Eventually, Alfred gets Bruce to go back out and face the Riddler and the Penguin. He asks Lucius Fox for a new Batsuit for his last fight and gets a nolan-versionized batboat and batwing and another tumbler, as well as new gadgets to do this. He eventually comes across Catwoman who also inspires him to become a hero again and since she believes in what he does, takes the blame for the five murders that two face committed in the Dark Knight. This works out because her suit looks like Batman’s and people thought it was a case of mistaken identity. Batman comes to realize that the Riddler is virtually his polar opposite, he did similarly lose a love one that was close to him, but ended up losing everything else and turned to a life of crime, while blaming Batman, while Batman became a hero instead and let his need for vengeance not get the better of him. So Batman stops the Penguin and the Riddler that are teamed together. At the end of the movie the Riddler plans to use biologically infused chemical missiles to destroy Gotham, killing himself and everyone else, since he believes that all should suffer, like he has, and die. With the use of his batboat, batwing, new gadgets, and new batsuit ( a different one for every movie and event he faces) he stops the Riddler. Batman also makes a point to apologize to the Riddler for what happened, even though he broke the law and he had to face and still face the consequences of his actions, which the Riddler refuses even at the end As for Catwoman, she willingly takes the blame for the murders and is unfortunately killed by the other underworld foes that were connected to the victims of the murders. At the end of the movie, Batman stops the chemical missiles from destroying Gotham and depending if Nolan wants to keep making these movies ( I would certainly hope and ask that he does) can have Batman be killed off at the end or live and save the day and be reaccepted into society and be the hero of Gotham for ever, as the same in case he is killed and in that case be giving a hero’s funeral as well.
The underlying theme of this movie is redemption and not letting your inner demons get the better of you, as Batman becomes a hero again and and wants to help and save Gotham, which he does and becomes an everlasting entity of good for Gotham, while the Riddler, his polar opposite, decided to lose himself and become a villain who wanted nothing but pain and destruction for all.
Also, please reintroduce the BATBOAT AND BATWING and let BATMAN HAVE A NEW BATSUIT, one for each movie and different time period and trials that he faces and the name for this new movie should be BATMAN ETERNAL.
My opinion:
Do NOT recast The Joker!
Have Nolan direct!
Do NOT use more than two villains!
Do NOT ever, ever add Robin!
I can’t see a Batman 3 with so many of the characters all thrown in. It needs to have somewhat of a focus, but not so much that the focus is taken off Batman himself, like TDK did.
But speaking of Batman, just finished Batman: Arkham Asylum, finally, haven’t had the time to get into the game until now. Man, that’s one of the best games I’ve ever played, and the story was great, a lot of interesting curves in the plot along the way. Two-Face in the sequel it looks like, lol. Woot.
I loved how there were so many opportunities for The Joker to just kill Batman, but he doesn’t because he wants Batman to be part of his show, lol.
I know there is alot of hate for robin out there but i think he can be done right. Robin was left destroyed after Batman and Robin, but so was batman, and two face, and they have both been reinvented seemlessly into nolans universe. I think he would be a good choice but it would be hard to get right.
@ Will
You know im surprised Christian Bale mentioned he doesnt like the idea of Robin being in the franchise when in the previous one, he tried to get the role that instead went to Chris O’ Donnell. I hope he isnt holding a grudge over that.
@ Will
I understand your point that it is possible Nolan could improve the cool-ness factor of Robin a bit. But it doesn’t change that, in my opinion, Batman really doesn’t need a sidekick. He’s already bad-ass enough as it is and I think it creates more drama when he has to make choices/face consequences on his own. But that’s just my opinion.
James im right there with you I CANT STAND NOLAN OR BALE! and dont want either of them backk and id really HOPE Robin is in the next movie!
@ neontiger21
As a badass he might be, Batman faced choices & consequences in TDK. All heroes face that more than once in their life cause thats the price you pay when you make that kind of commitment. Id say people over exaggerate how bad the idea of Robin being on film again is. If they could bring back Joker and Two-face back on screen in a better way, i dont see why they cant do the same with Robin. I agree w/ Andre about Paul Dini aswell as Bruce Timm mentioned of Robin being part of Batman’s life and importance. Except for his voice tone as Batman, I still like Bale as Batman.
@Andre
You’re not helping your argument at all by sounding like a complete moron. Try to talk like you’re at least 16 years old next time, then maybe someone might listen to you without rolling their eyes. Or for once you’d be called “sir” without it being followed by “you’re making a scene.” Lol, sorry, Simpsons quote…
@chrisj
I’m not so sure about Robin. It worked for the comics and cartoon, but if you really think about it, would Batman really want to drag someone else into such a dangerous profession? I mean, he does it because he feels like he has to, but to put someone else’s life in danger is a whole other story. Nolan or whomever will have to find a really creative way to work Robin into the story…
@ Ken J
Remember the episode (Robin’s Reckoning) 2 parter? Batman was lookin for Zucco but wasnt having any luck and word hit he might skip town so Dick snuck out to find the guy himself, first takin care of some punk and got a tip of where he was. Im sure they could think up somthing. They could have Dick prove himself worthy before or after he puts the costume on. And the only time Batman wouldnt want Robin around would be when Batman was to face someone like the Joker, Ras Al Ghoul, Bane, or some cult or terrorists. Dick would have to prove himself more than once probly to get Bruce to gain his trust and believe hes worthy. One thing Batman said to Tim Drake while training him on TAS was his 3 rules. 1. give him everything you got. 2. give me more. and 3. he makes the rules. In Nolan’s franchise, Id say it would be harder introduce Batgirl than Robin. Unless indeed that was a young Barbara in TDK Two-Face was holding hostage, then maybe it would take heck of a story to include her as a older adult. Proper thing to if they consider using Robin is to watch Batman Forever and Batman & Robin and take notes if anything useful and not what to use. Example was in Batman & Robin for the Robin costume. You could easily tell it was the design of Nightwing’s, including the mask. Only thing was it was colored red, not blue.
@chrisj
It’s not about being “worthy” or “good enough.” It’s the fact that as a crime fighter, no matter how good you are, there’s always that chance of something bad happening to you. Look at cops, how many really really good cops that have caught all types of bad guys, can shoot a dime from 25 yards with a handgun, can do all of these things, only to die because he was struck by a car while approaching a pulled over vehicle? That kind of thing happens all the time.
So it’s about Batman consciously allowing someone else to risk their life to do what he does. I honestly don’t think it would be easy at all for someone like Batman to allow someone else to be in his positions. If I were Batman, when I found out about Gordon’s daughter being Batgirl, I would do everything in my power to convince her not to, I’d even do something mean like expose her to her father so maybe he can talk some sense into her. Think about if the worst would happen, and she dies because she wanted to dress up like Batman. Wouldn’t you think that Batman will feel very guilty about that? Same with Robin, if he dies as his sidekick because of some freak incident, Batman would probably feel like crap and he would probably feel responsible…
Remember that episode of the animated Batman where he has a nightmare that Batgirl dies?
