‘Warehouse 13′ Cancelled by Syfy

Warehouse 13 HG Wells Stickup Warehouse 13 Cancelled by Syfy

Since 2009, Warehouse 13 has offered a quirkier alternative to the darker science fiction serials offered by the Syfy network. The tale of government agents tasked with recovering artifacts of supernatural or super-scientific origin has garnered a decent cult following over the years.

Though Agents Pete Lattimer (Eddie McLintock), Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly), and Artie Nelson (Saul Rubinek) have survived everything from rage-inducing combs to a malevolently resurrected H.G. Wells, there’s one thing the heroes of Warehouse 13 can’t escape: network cancellation. In a move sure to disappoint loyal fans, Syfy has decided to discontinue the series.

EW reports that Warehouse 13‘s fifth season will be its last. Already truncated to just six episodes, the series will officially end in 2014. Syfy President of Original Content, Mark Stern, stated:

“Warehouse 13 has been an incredible signature series for us… We are grateful to the loyal and passionate fan base and know that Jack Kenny, his gifted creative team, and outstanding ensemble cast will give them an amazing finale season.”

This is an odd move on the part of Syfy, given that season 4 of Warehouse 13 has yet to finish and production of its follow-up won’t begin until mid-summer. The series is still pulling in decent numbers for the network (though its week-to-week ratings have fluctuated this season). So, why cancel a well-liked and well-watched show?

Warehouse 13 Agents Warehouse 13 Cancelled by Syfy

One possibility pertains to Warehouse 13‘s current lead-in series, Defiance. Defiance was a heavy investment for Syfy – a cross-media experiment designed so that an MMORPG video game and television show could actively promote and influence one another. Since Defiance has been officially picked up for a second season, it may be that Syfy is trying to free up more budget resources for the expensive property by cutting Warehouse 13 short.

Of course, this is all just speculation. It may be that Warehouse 13 was designed to end in its fifth season, and these final six episodes are truly its intended swan song. If so, this may end up being a blessing in disguise for the series’ fans. After all, it’s always a shame to watch a favorite show outlive its charm.

Warehouse 13 will continue to air its current season on Syfy on Monday nights.

    • Well, you know, we have to have more Ghost Hunters, Wrestling, and cooking shows instead of sci-fi, fantasy and horror on a Science Fiction Network. What a bunch of loons.

      • And let’s not forget that silly Blackout show with Urkel as the host.

  1. Son of a…

Well, at least they get another season and they know about it early enough to end it properly. After that SyFy finally have more room for a Haunted Golf Kart reality show or more wrestling.

    • Can’t you talk to Crowley or Castiel or something? This channel needs “a clue” spell. :-D

  2. If they need to free up budget why don’t they cancel their numerous awful reality shows? Ghost Hunters has been on about 15 years longer than it should have been. If they ditch all of those they’ll have enough budget to make even more good shows. Oh well, hopefully it’s better than Eureka’s abrupt ending.

    • That’s because reality shows have tiny budgets by comparison. Handing a couple of local yokels a camera and letting them film basically nothing is pretty cheap.

    • Exactly! Ditch all these damn reality. And seriously who watched Ghost Hunters anymore.

      • It’s all about Ghost Adventures on the travel channel.

  3. I remember watching the first two episodes and not really liking it much.

Oh well, this happens, if they give it a good send off then I guess fans have 5 seasons worth to rewatch.

I don’t get the hate towards pro wrestling on the network though. Sure, it doesn’t really belong on SyFy and I stopped watching all pro wrestling (not just televised stuff but iPPVs and shows posted exclusively to youtube, like the Japanese promotions etc) but pro wrestling brings SyFy its biggest ratings each week doesn’t it?

Having commercials during pro wrestling shows for the other SyFy stuff also helps market those shows to people who wouldn’t normally give the channel a chance so again, why the complaints?

If you don’t like pro wrestling then you wouldn’t watch it so you wouldn’t have any need to comment about it on an article with nothing to do with pro wrestling would you? Especially since WWE are a multi-billion dollar global company and don’t need SyFy’s money to stay on the air. They only exist on that network because their own network plans fell through and they’re doing SyFy a favour by having the network’s shows air during WWE shows so….

Apologies for turning this into something not related to the article but when people with no clue what they’re talking about start talking a whole bunch of nothing about something I have a lifetime of knowledge of then I just have to react to set them straight.

    • Well for starters: wrestling sucks monkey balls. No setting straight required, thank you very much. ;)

    • Really?
You have a Lifetime of experience in this?
Are you some scrub for Pro-Wrestling or something?

The reason it’s on SyFy is cause because most other Networks didn’t want it…

And it’s not relevant to the issue?
It is relevant when discussing their programming choices and so on…
We’re not the ones who need setting straight from my perspective…

    • @Dazz.

Since you stated about people commenting on something they know nothing about.

      Take your own medicine.

WWE is big, but the parent company of Syfy is bigger. Comcast which owns NBC Universal.
So it is really not about the money or revenue, it is the fact of the matter, no one really cares about what wrestling brings to Syfy, it is not why we watch SYFY Channel.

WWE is worth 2.8 Billion with a Profit of 99 Million last year based on an operating cost of 130 Million with revenue of 654 Million. Not actually a multi billion dollar company

Contrast to Comcast worth 49.6 Billion with an operating cost of 13 Billion with a revenue of 62 Billion. Actually a multi billion dollar company in every sense of the definition.

So, next time you want to come down on someone for trashing wrestling on SYFY. Do your homework.

      • You get ‘em, Batman! I mean Bruce…I mean Jeff. ;-)

        • @#@&*!@# KLINGONS!

    • Instead of wrestling being on Syfy, they could just have it on their other channels (like USA) and still advertise the shows on Syfy. I turn to a scifi channel, I want scifi darn it!

      • I agree with you – I turn to SYFY to see a science fiction show. And, wasn’t that the reason it was named SYFY? Can someone please tell me why there is wrestling – I know it has got to be the money, but what are the ratings for the wrestling? And, are the wresting ratings better than WH13 ratings, respectfully asking, please.

    • Why NOT show wwe on syfy? Its nothing more than choreographed dancing that ‘looks’ like they’re getting the crap knocked out of them. Yes, they’re well trained, and yes, it takes talent, but it isn’t REAL wrestling, and we all know that.

  4. Urgh.

I’m getting real tired of networks messing about with show schedules only to then cancel series citing poor viewing figures.

Of course there’s poor figures! No-one knows when the flip the damn thing is on!

This has been coming since the break in this current season and after Eureka was canned, it’s been a question of waiting for the axe to fall.

But for Defiance? A show that does what..? It does what tons of other shows have done before it. Another po faced alien invasion series. Which they’ll cancel after next season anyway. As they do with pretty much everything. Warehouse felt like the last man standing from a time when SciFi cared about what they made.

W13 wasn’t exactly the best thing in the universe but it was fun, funny and inventive at its best. What’s not to like about it?

Anyway at least this way we’ll get a little miniseries to finish it all off on a good note.

And hey, maybe in a few years we’ll see a Warehouse 14 pop up somewhere!

  5. BOOOOOOOOOOOO Syfy, boooooooooooo! Your ruining my tv watching experience again. You screwed me once with Eureka and your doing it again.

  6. Overdue.

  7. Although I initially liked this show, my impression is that it just got campier and campier. Got really tired of Myka’s cutesy confused look, Pete’s childish antics, and having no real consequence on the show, with person after person dying and then coming back to life. I agree with Jason above…long overdue.

    • That’s the problem with it. The premise had massive potential but the writers seemed content with mediocre, juvenile humor and performances. I’m guessing this nixes the idea of the spin-off with HG Wells, too.

  8. SyFy is not good with TV Series!

  9. well moving it to 10/9 after defiance was a bad decision, also splitting season 4 in half by a lot of time is also bad kind of surprising to cancel it right now with it still pulling huge numbers

  10. Par for the course with seefee, hell they cancel some shows as they are being announced.

  11. Get rid of Defiance its so bad and keep W13 … SyFy

  12. Screw you SyFy. First SGU, then Eureka, then Alphas and now Warehouse 13. Let me guess, Haven is going to be gone after next season, too? I will NOT start watching any new shows they premiere. No sense in getting invested in something only to have it cancelled.

  13. come on why the hell you cancel the most funny tv show you ever had ?!?

  14. The titles were the most imaginative. Defiance is not so good.

    • Although that’s pretty cruel, I loled reading it.

Reality shows do have a place but SyFy does suffer from reality show bloat.

    • I’d watch that. The title could use some refinement, though. Too bad that “Survivor” is already taken…

    • Great idea, only put the idiot network exes there also.

  15. One more Strike against SyFy.
The only thing you have left that I like is Lost Girl.
Once you cancel that, and you will, I’ll simply be blocking Syfy from my reciever.
    Wrestling isn’t Science Fiction.
    Reality shows aren’t Science Fiction.
Once you cancel the shows that I like, I’ve no more use for you.

  16. Typical suits making a decision for Sci-Fi fans, more ghost shows, wrestling and info crap. Monday is crammed with decent programming, Defiance, WH13, Revolution, Bates Motel. With not much else on the other nights, why not move it to another night?? For viewers who enjoy Sci Fi, just another strike against SkyFry /NBC. Killing off the other few decent shows on SkyFry , to keep Defiance. Stupid. I have an idea, how about someone launch a Science Fiction channel which shows new and old SciFi / horror movies and TV shows? SkyFry has list it’s way and recently I heard an exec at SkyFry say their getting back to their roots, B&$l SH&&t. !!! Lets hope the new RDM show Helix due out by the end of year has the quality of his crown Jewel BSG 2004

  17. Warehouse is a great show, but I personally have had more trouble getting to see it at the later time slot. I think Defiance is hurting it. I can’t get into it at all. It was a big let down. It’s also consuming a lot of resources. Since it is consuming two hours I’m already bummed and bored by the time Warehouse is on. They should dump it, reschedule Warehouse and start producing more good shows like Eureka. Warehouse could use some better writing too. Not as good as it used to be.

  18. I still miss Far scape!

    • Me too. One of the best Sci fi shows ever.

  19. And yes I know its only one word!

  20. i thought this show was already cancelled.

  21. Where am I supposed to get my weekly Allison Scagliotti fix?

  22. Well after that I’ll be down to ONE show on SyFy.
And after Haven gets the axe in 2015 I’ll forget SyFy even exists.

  23. Darn. Syfy kills another one.

  24. The issue is numbers, whether % or $$$. Somebody thinks or worse feels that W13 isn’t viable. I respectfully disagree, the potential for drama and comedy is as open as the Stargate franchise. We see how the suits feel: silly and contrived “reality” shows of silly antics along with wrestling… As wrestling is in fact FANTASY, one can make a case for it being in the syfy retinue. (LOL). A little tweaking of the story and the H G Wells spinoff would have opened another doorway into fiction… But alas, that requires forthought – a commodity seemingly in short supply at syfy… It has become ever more the pale horse of its early ride. We an only hope and write in – not attacking, but suggesting. Defiance has yet to prove itself, but the silly 6 episode seasons are nothing but miniseries strung together like mini-sausages… Hope springs eternal…
