[Update: Scroll down for a list of additional actors that have been shortlisted for the film].

Whether or not moviegoers are confident in the prospect of a big budget video game film “done right,” a lot of studios are banking on making that a reality. For years we’ve discussed the idea here on Screen Rant that the next big genre boom after comic book movies would be video game adaptations and that reality is now closer than ever. Ubisoft Motion Pictures already has studios and talent signed up for adaptations of their key franchises Assassin’s Creed, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell and while Legendary Pictures is slowly working away on a Mass Effect movie, they have greenlight a project based on one of the most recognizable game franchises in Warcraft.

Director Duncan Jones, a fan of the games himself, was tapped to help the ambitious and unapologetically fantasy-based adaptation. He earned a stroke of goodwill for making a surprise appearance during the Legendary-Warner Bros. panel at Comic-Con, debuting test footage of Warcraft to offer an idea of what fans could expect from the feature film, and it was one of the highlights of this year’s convention.

On the casting front, Deadline has the scoop that Jones and Legendary have made offers for lead parts to Colin Farrell and Paula Patton in the Warcraft film. Patton had lead roles in Deja Vu and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, most recently starring alongside Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington in 2 Guns. Farrell is coming off of Seven Psychopaths and Dead Man Down but according to Deadline is “50/50″ on whether or not he’ll accept the offer.

Paula Patton in 2 Guns Warcraft Movie: Colin Farrell & Paula Patton Offered Lead Roles [Updated]

Farrell earned a lot of geek cred at Comic-Con 2011 where he took the stage twice for the Fright Night and Total Recall remakes and isn’t unfamiliar with the genre, having played the titular character in Alexander. With reported plot details on Warcraft hinting that the adaptation will follow the story of the original Warcraft strategy games – focusing on the humans vs. orcs conflict – instead of of the more recent World of Warcraft online game, the two parts the Patton and Farrell are up for are most likely for humans.

According to  Bleeding Cool’s previous scoop on the film’s story, three characters were namedropped in the wizard Khadgar, the mage Medivh and the knight champion Anduin Lothar – any of which Farrell could have been offered. No details however, were revealed on his or Patton’s possible characters.

In addition to Farrell and Patton, Deadline is now reporting that Paul Dano (Prisoners), Travis Fimmel (Vikings), Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels), and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) are also up for possible (undisclosed) roles.

With production beginning early next year for a release in 2015, expect more casting reports soon with official confirmations later this fall. For more on the game franchise and World of Warcraft, head to our sister site, Game Rant.

  1. Colin Farrell is one of those actors that i never get sick of, loved him in phonebooth

  2. I’ll watch Paula Patton in anything. Colin Ferrell, however, tends to shine a little brighter in smaller-scale films.

  3. Can see Farrell as King Varian

    • If it’s the events of Warcraft 1, Varian would be a young boy at the time. A more possible choice would be Turalyon or Medivh.

      • Yes true, but depending on what story route they go for or if they mix it up a bit with the story I think he could do a decent King Varian.

  4. I was hoping after Moon that Duncan Jones would do his oft mentioned sc-fi epic Mute. However I am curious to see what he makes of World of Warcraft.

    • Me too – especially since he legitimately respects the source material and has Legendary’s high-concept-loving backing.

  5. Paula earned my respect after she did Mission Impossible 4. So, that will be interesting. She has the physicality. Colin Farrell has great talent too but every time he has done a role in a big movie he hasn’t come across as strong as he has in indie films like In Bruges and Pride and Glory. As far as chemistry between them…I bet it would work.

  6. Paula Patton is an absolute goddess of beauty who deserves to be offered as many roles as possible. If only we could see her appear as frequently on the big screen as we unfortunately see Farrell.

    • I’d give her a “role”, alright…a “roll” in the hay!

  7. I have difficulty imagining Colin Farrell in a Warcraft role… possibly because I’m more familiar with the online version of the game? (where the characters tend to be much “larger than life”, which doesn’t really fit Farrell as a descriptor).

P.S. “green-lit” or “green-lighted” is the conjugation you were looking for in the first paragraph.

  8. I don’t care who they cast, I just think that the humans vs. orcs have been done before, they should really focus on a different storyline, like humans and any other horde aligned race. If they really do decide to do human vs orc, it should have A LOT OF/ MOSTLY MAGIC (being that the main human character is a magic user), to make it differ from The Lord of the ring.

    • You must be a warcraft noob who never played the original games pre WoW. Go away.

  9. Paula Patton is up for Garona.
I’ve not seen her work, but she looks great for the part.

  10. Wasnt a fan of farrell until Dead Man Down, really good movie IMO dont know why it was not well recieved.

  11. Uh…anyone else see Paula Patton as Wonder Woman?!?! Let’s break down some barriers people and make it happen!!!

  12. Chick in the pic with the gun made me shoot off (my mouth…what did you think I was gonna say??).

My kid is up for a WOW movie, but he still wants Halo as well.

  13. After his recent performance in Vikings I think Travis Fimmel would be great. He’s surprisingly good on that show, and obviously the Vikings to Warcraft transition shouldn’t be too difficult in terms of what role he’s gonna play I would assume.

  14. Paul dano needs to be in more movies, i could see him as something outside a soldier. Same with anton yelchin who i like very much. Anson mount should take the lead he is awesome

  15. Colin Farrell in a Warcraft movie, holy crap. After seeing him nail his titular character in the movie Alexander I’m excited, no hoping that he might be in this because his work as Alexander was mind-blowing. The movie might’ve bombed in box office but he was amazing nonetheless.

  16. Is this going to be a Warcraft movie or a WoW movie? if it’s the latter, I think I’ll pass.

  17. Paula Patton is amazing and would be an excellent casting choice. Farrell is unexpected, but he’s a really good actor and would be interesting. Anson Mount, Paul Dano, and especially Anton Yelchin would also be good. I don’t know much about Fimmel, so I can’t comment on him.
