When it comes to Comic-Cons, San Diego is always the venue for studios to bring attention to some of their biggest upcoming films. Hall H is primarily the beneficiary of these panels with Warner Bros and Marvel Studios often stealing the majority of the headlines. While SDCC is undoubtedly the biggest con, New York Comic-Con is the easily the second most popular. NYCC is usually more television based than SDCC, but the later date allows studios one last chance to get the promotional campaign starting for films that will already be in theaters by the following SDCC.
One of the biggest films coming out next year will be War for the Planet of the Apes, the third installment in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise. These films have been held in high regard thanks to the technical breakthroughs provided in visual effects and motion-capture. As it turns out, fans in attendance at NYCC will be able to see a sneak peek of the threequal and more.
Deadline has revealed that War of the Planet of the Apes is heading to New York Comic-Con next week. Director Matt Reeves, producer Dylan Clark, and star Andy Serkis will all be in attendance for a panel on October 6th at 8:30 pm – where they will show an exclusive behind the scenes look at the film. Attendees specifically interested in the VFX development of the movie can also attend Andy Serkis’ panel on October 7th at 3 pm.
It is a bit surprising that the promotional campaign could be starting up as soon as next week, but the film is one of the more highly anticipated movies of next year. The summer is crowded, but the franchise has proven to be a successful money maker for the studio before, and bigger returns are to be expected this time around. Rise of the Planet of the Apes earned $481.8 million worldwide, which was then surpassed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes making $710.6 million.
There has not been a significant amount of buzz surrounding this film compared to other summer blockbusters of 2017. The likes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Dunkirk, and Wonder Woman have all generated plenty of interest early on. If the third installment in this franchise is set to compete with other big blockbusters, there is no better time than NYCC to kickstart excitement.
War for the Planet of the Apes opens in U.S. theaters on July 14th, 2017.
