Independent writer/director John Michael McDonagh has made a bit of a name for himself over the last five years as a director of English-language films produced across the pond. With critical darlings The Guard from 2011 and Calvary from 2014 already under his belt, the seminal British comedy filmmaker will be making his first foray into an American-based feature starring the likes of Alexander Skarsgård (The Legend of Tarzan), Michael Peña (The Martian), and Theo James (Divergent) with his original buddy cop production, War on Everyone.
War on Everyone stars Skarsgård and Peña as two ineptly corrupt cops (from Albuquerque, New Mexico) who attempt to blackmail each and every criminal who is foolish enough to cross their path. But when the two officers of the law accidentally come into contact with notorious criminal kingpin Lord James Mangan (James), their lives are put in a little more danger than they are used to – and what results is a seemingly off-kilter, action/comedy in keeping with McDonagh’s decidedly sharp satirical style.
In the official red band trailer for War on Everyone (see above), officers Terry Monroe (Skarsgård) and Bob Bolaño (Peña) are seen engaging in all kinds of mischief and mayhem with little to no regard for their own safety or the well being of the community which they have presumably sworn to protect. Everything that follows is predictably chaotic, though thanks in no small part to McDonagh’s careful direction and writing the proceedings are tinged with plenty of sardonic good will.
Check out the official plot synopsis for War on Everyone below:
“In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Terry Monroe (Skarsgård) and Bob Bolaño (Peña) are two corrupt cops who set out to blackmail and frame every criminal unfortunate enough to cross their path. Things take a sinister turn, however, when they try to intimidate someone who is more dangerous than they are. Or is he?”
McDonagh is no stranger to crafting original comedy films to please independent film connoisseurs, though until now his productions have been largely relegated to the art house circuit and have accordingly gone on to become sleeper hits with little reach beyond a select pool of film buffs. However, with the added inclusion of such well known talents as Skarsgård and Peña, perhaps War on Everyone will help bring McDonagh more into the mainstream, and afford his outstanding body of work the wider audience that it deserves.
War on Everyone opens in UK theaters on September 30th, 2016. We’ll let you know when a U.S. release date is announced.
