In August we reported that Frank Darabont, the acclaimed director behind The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and more recently, The Mist, was finalizing contract negotiations with AMC to write and direct a series adaptation of the zombie-survival comic, The Walking Dead. To the excitement of fans of the popular comic book series, a pilot has finally been greenlit!

The character-based series follows a Kentucky police officer and his family along with a bunch of other survivors who work together in resistance of the world that’s been overrun with zombies. Although a zombie-themed book, the stories of The Walking Dead are really about the people, their relationships and their development while trying to cope with this impossible situation which makes it ripe for the making for a serialized program.

While Darabont was negotiating with the network, AMC VP Joel Stillerman hinted that the show will follow the important elements of what makes the comic series stand-out as it does and confirmed that it will stay true to the source material and maintain the same tone of the books.

“This is not about zombies popping out of closets… This is a story about survival, and the dynamics of what happens when a group is forced to survive under these circumstances. The world (in ‘Walking Dead’) is portrayed in a smart, sophisticated way.”

Now that the deal is done and that a pilot for The Walking Dead is on the way, things are looking up and I am excited to see this in live-action. AMC’s Charlie Collier affirmed their confidence in those involved after greenlighting the project.

“Working with people like Frank Darabont and Gale Anne Hurd is the right way in for us to deliver a project of distinction in this genre.”

Hurd works for Valhalla Motion Pictures and Darabont is producing alongside Robert Kirkman, co-creator and writer of the series.

  1. Holy Crap! That is absolutely GREAT NEWS!!!

I just started getting into comic books a few weeks ago and Walking Dead (along with Y Man) are my favorite. Real, adult comic books.

I do wander how they will address some of the GRAPHIC violence.

Furthermore, Frank D. is behind it? AWESOME! If there's a guy who can do character development, it's this guy (Shawshank, Mist, etc.)

I'm so freaking excited about this. Thanks for the news! I can't wait!

  2. very good news. about time we get a zombie tv series. also wondering if it will be on regular tv or hbo.

  3. A new Darabont project? I'm in.

  4. When you say AMC… do you mean the AMC “TV” channel? Or is it going to be on another network?

  5. This is good news, since I saw Zombieland I kept wondering why they were no tv show about zombies.

  6. Good god, if they do this show right it is going to be really rough to watch. I'm friggin excited!

  7. Am I excited? HELL YES! I just finished book 11 the other day. FANTASTIC! I love it because it is so different. Best thing that is out there right now for comics. I will have to re-read all 11 soon.

  8. Anyone know when the new issue is coming out? #69 I believe.

  9. oh AMC okay good. i would hate to see a bunch of people miss this if it was on HBO.

  10. Y: The Last Man was fantastic. When you're done that, check out Preacher (Extreme Adult content warning though).

  11. Thanks Rob, I've been lightly researching adult comics. Next on my list was Sandman. I will FOR SURE check out Preacher. Any other recommendations? I was thinking Witchblade and Darkness.

  12. I second Preacher. Just getting through reading it again. Over half way done with book 9. I can only assume my jaw will drop again in the final pages as it did when I first read it. Love that series. I have had a hard time deciding if I like that or Watchmen more. Walking Dead is my favorite current series though, haven't found anything new that can beat it for me.
