[WARNING: This post contains SPOILERS for The Walking Dead season 5.]
The first half of The Walking Dead‘s season 5 was brutal, putting Rick and his spirited group of survivors through even more anguish than before (as if that’s even imaginable at this point). Their fondest memories in this post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested landscape are from living holed up inside a prison, and without a new safe haven to flee to, matters are likely only going to get worse before they can get better.
The only thing working in their favor is that for the first time in months the group is whole – or, as whole as it can be after the mid-season finale‘s shocking and tragic end. And the mantra for the back half of season 5 will be just that: togetherness, or more specifically, ‘Surviving Together,’ as this new trailer is titled.

In all honesty, it’d be more appropriate to call this first look at the continuation of season 5 a teaser instead of trailer, seeing as the footage shown doesn’t appear to come from an episode, but is rather a stylistically shot montage of the survivors stumbling fearfully and aimlessly through the woods.
Which isn’t to say that this minute long video isn’t worthwhile, because it does appear to perfectly set the stage for where the survivors are mentally. The loss of Beth was the most devastating to the group since little Sophia turned up in that barn. And like with Sophia, the grief surrounding Beth’s death is only intensified by the lengths at which they had gone to find and rescue her.
Showrunner Scott Gimple said earlier of how the loss of Beth will affect the group:
This is something that will affect all of these characters extremely deeply moving into the next half of the season. These characters are being ground down into the Earth. This isn’t the last devastating event to befall these characters… they are being tested and they are being pushed and this isn’t the end of that.
The Walking Dead is bleak, there’s no denying that, but it is also arguably the most popular show on television. As horrible and violent as the world they’re surviving in is, perhaps we as the audience still find it more palatable than our own horrible and violent world. At the very least, it’s more entertaining.
