You’ve got to hand it to AMC’s The Walking Dead, despite all the creative shake-ups and behind-the-scenes reorganizations the show continues to roll along, shattering cable television ratings records in the process.

While the series is currently pushing through the final five episodes of season 3 – with the finale, ‘Welcome to the Tombs,’ airing on March 31 – the network recently announced that the cast and crew would once again gather in Atlanta, Georgia, as filming on season 4 is scheduled to commence on May 6.

In addition to the production announcement, AMC also officially stated that The Walking Dead writer Scott M. Gimple would be taking the reins as showrunner from the departing Glen Mazzara. But according to the network, Gimple isn’t the only one on the Walking Dead staff getting a promotion; co-executive producer and special effects makeup guru Greg Nicotero and producer Tom Luse have also been officially bumped up to executive producer status on the show.

How the shifting of personnel will affect the season 4 storyline (and beyond) is anyone’s guess, but as for the principles involved, i.e., Robert Kirkman and Joel Stillerman, AMC’s executive vice president of original programming, a sense of optimism abounds.

In regard to season 4 and Mazzara’s replacement, Kirkman had this to say:

“Scott has been an essential part of this show since he came aboard at the very beginning of season two. He’s contributed to guiding this show in a substantial way that has resulted in a lot of the key scenes and storylines fans have dubbed signature moments of ‘The Walking Dead.’ I am thrilled to begin work on a brand new season of ‘The Walking Dead’ with Scott at the helm, and I truly believe we could be embarking on what will be the best season of this show yet.”

Stillerman continued to praise Gimple’s writing efforts on the show and goes on to commend the contributions of Nicotero and Luse that have helped keep the show running and no doubt aided considerably in its incredible success.

“Scott’s voice has been an integral one since he joined the show. Greg Nicotero is a true artist whose work is simply brilliant. And, Tom Luse has really created the machine that allows this very large show to get made week-to-week. We congratulate all three in their new roles on the series and look forward to ramping up production on season four.”

With season 3 still running, neither Kirkman nor Stillerman had much to say regarding the direction Gimple was planning on taking the series. But if reports concerning one key aspect of Mazzara’s firing are to be believed, whatever Gimple has planned will likely be a storyline that Kirkman has already given some serious input on. For his part in the season 4 announcement,  Gimple simply offered a few words on his new role and his devotion to The Walking Dead, rather than speak specifically about where Rick and Co. were headed in the next 16 episodes.

“I’m thrilled to continue the tradition of the spectacular, cinematic, horrifying, exciting and emotional storytelling of ‘The Walking Dead.’ I’m a huge fan of the comics, and started with the show on the other side of the set, as an avid viewer. Over the past two years, it’s been an incredible privilege making such great television with the best cast and crew I’ve ever worked with – I can’t wait to make some more.”

Gimple is credited with writing several episodes of the series, including ‘Hounded‘ and the penultimate episode of season 3, ‘This Sorrowful Life.’ Gimple also penned the season 2 episode ‘Pretty Much Dead Already‘ – which, oddly enough, would mark the end of Frank Darabont’s time on the series, and the beginning of Mazzara’s brief stint as showrunner.

At any rate, let the Gimple era of The Walking Dead officially begin.

The Walking Dead season 4 will premiere in October 2013.

  1. I’m pretty excited, so far his episodes include some of my favorites. But, I didn’t find anything wrong with the seasons Mazzara did, but then it’s not some cheesy CW show, so I don’t think it could get too bad.

    • Season two was pretty boring at points. I think a comic on HijinksEnsue summed up season two pretty well. He called it “Argument Farm”.

      • I mean I did watch them all at once but I feel that by doing so season 2 is sort of setting up and establishing a lot of things that had been done is season 1. But, I’ve only watched everything once, so I couldn’t say this confidently but I think it was pretty good, but probably could’ve been better.

  2. Bring it!! let’s hope rick snaps out of it soon.

  3. Here’s hoping the rest of season three is awesome as its been as season four continues this streak.

I hope they stop changing show runners. Keep one for more then one season.

Damn good show though. My favorite show of all time.

  4. In the Walking dead season 3 finale, Martinez will be killed

    • Is that so?

    • Nope.

  5. the walking dead>>>>>>games of thrones

    • Anything>>>>>>>>game of thrones

      • I recently watched GOT season 1 & 2 due to peer pressure its a decent show but its hilariously OVERRATED.

        • Agreed. I think people just think HBO + fantasy + sex scenes + some action = best TV show ever. However it’s merely good.

          • What’s the matter, did Game of Thrones molest u when u were young?
I’s EASILY my favorite series, no other comes close.

  6. I have been disappointed by the second half of this season. It started really well and carried a lot of momentum until the mid-season break. Now it seems to be falling into a rut. I want to slap almost every character at least once an episode.

    • That sounds nice, have a slap for me as well ? I would love one :)

    • I am so with you. Rick seeing dead people and acting like Shane?

Glen turning his back on his woman when she needed him the most so he could have a hissie-fit??

Andrea?? She has been a piece of driftwood since we met her on season one, no real substance, just floating wherever the current takes her.

Daryl leaving the group for his abusive big brother who just tried to beat Glen into a puddle of pudding and feed him to a Zombie?

Amazing, but Carol, Hershel, and Beth are holding this group together. At least the Governor is SUPPOSED to be unhinged….

      • I just want to point out that Glen’s reaction after what happened is completely normal, and the fact is that this isn’t a normal world, it’s not the type of world where people really discuss their feelings so you shouldn’t go on about that. Also Daryl leaving with Meryl is normal they’re family, I know that even if my sister was a racist piece of s*** i’d still probably leave with her, if the group of people we were with refused to let her back in. But I won’t argue about the other things you’re annoyed with.

      • …..the entire town of Woodbury for their simpering loyalty to the Govenor.

  7. hell yeah!! season 4 is gonna be so sick only bad thing is were gonna have to wait so long till it comes on and season 3 is almost over =(

  8. S3 has been the best season so far, they finally stopped acting like they had their heads up their asses. I am sad to see a new showrunner come on board who could potentially take us back to S2, where we had the looooong boring stretch on the farm.

  9. I would love to be a zombie for the show! I have loved zombies ever since I saw the original Romero as a child and being from pittsburgh! Thx for the opportunity!!

  10. Girls>>>>>>>>>>>Walking Dead

  11. I watched “The Mist” again yesterday and noticed that it had three actors from “The Walking Dead” in it. Then I noticed Frank Darabont’s name on the end credits.

    • I noticed that as well. Also, from being human Ayden is in the mist.

  12. I loved that song you gotta hold on …hold on…it really made the mood calm and knowing they are going to kick the governor’s azz…lol…Andrea is just wanted a warm bed…same with shane…she is just a well…right now she is a traitor…machone saved her…she turned her back on her group…Lori coming back as a ghost is weak…she slept with shane and turned Rick and shane against each other so she needed to go…Meryl loves his brother is all I can say the rest is a mystery but he will be good if he goes against the governor…we need some action!

    • I liked that song too. And yea you’re right about it making the mood calm.

  14. I hope this story doesn’t lose its way. Please God we don’t want it to turn into another Lost! This entire season hasn’t really moved on has it and I know David Morrisey is due to start filming, he said so on a British radio show the other day….so thats more of the conflict with the Govenor story-line? :( We know there were signs of the army (the trucks that the Govenor ambushed and a helicopter flying over at the begining of season 3,and some hint that the scientist could ‘cure’ the walkers. I will be become bored if they don’t expand the overall story next season. Come on give it the budget it needs…Fox must be making a fortune!!!

  15. WHERE IS THE SEASON 4 LEAK FOR EPISODE 1?? anyone know? all the links for it seem to be taken down :(

  16. theres ones you just gotta look! anyway i got the it from here mate mediafirecloud.com/twds4ep1.html

  17. The walking dead season 1 and 3 were REALLY GOOD. HOwever, season 2 was kinna boring and there were any special excitments. Im waiting for the last episode of season 3 and im really really looking forward to season 4. Glenn has brought a lot of sparks to the series, and having him in the show, is another + for me watching it. And that governor, SUCKS.

  18. The Walking Dead is a extremely well written, well executed series. It proves that television can now turn out world class entertainment for a fraction of the budget vs shooting a feature film. No one really wants a good story to end so a well written series builds the dynamics for an entire franchise. I can say that other than a VERY few editing mistakes I.e., the 1986 Chevrolet Caprice that was driven by Merle where the film editors shot the car without the fancy rims… It’s truly one of the best cinematic made for mainstream TV series ever produced. The Walking Dead sets the bar as for what TV producers need to strive for. Gone are the days of the A Team and cheesy story lines

  19. Good show may be will become reality in the future on this planet we call earth

  20. Your a dumb ass

  21. I just started watching TWD this season. Thank you for playing everything from season 1 so, now I know everything. The show is the only one on television I can sit through. I love it. Thanks I love every actor they are amazing. Looking forward to season 4.. Great job to each & every person involved in the making of the show. I applause all of you!

  22. I love the show. I never watched it for the first time season 3 with my son & I was addicted. I’m happy they played season 1,2 & 3 so I was able to catch up. I applaud every single person who works on the show. It takes a lot of team work to make something so brilliant. I can’t wait for season 4. I was a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries. I can’t Stanton to even hear the beginning if the show anymore. TVD used to be good. But, never as amazing as THE WALKING DEAD!! Good Job to all the people who work so hard to give America something to watch & take our minds off all of our troubles & trying to pay bills as prices rise & jobs are being lost every day. Thanks looking forward to Season 4..

  23. I love this show.., I never miss it. I can’t wait until October..

  24. The Walking Dead has gotten worse and worse with each episode – and with that craptastic season finale – it totally *sucks* now. That stupid episode made so many events during season 3 obsolete.

  25. Awesome comic books, and well adapted to screen,
However, Episode 1 gave a bigger picture to the whole global crisis.it set the stage.
When Rick rode into the city on horseback to be confronted by hordes of zombies.. truly awesome moment..
And this is my point, as a fan..Walking Dead, now is a global success with a huge fan base.
For season4 I want it to reach out to its global audience and give them a glimpse of their world destroyed..to reach in and touch their lives.. where are the burning houses of parliament?.Apocalyptic Beijing,Moscow,Paris,Sydney.. ect??. If not this then at least other major US cities…I want Ricks crew to be on the road, more travelling, more adventure, more exposed to the world…the plot doesn’t need to deviate. Rick’s crew could stumble upon an abandoned news station and archived footage of the “fall of humanity” with reports from around the world.. Why? because this is true horror of what made the whole zombie genre a success in the first place and why it appeals to everyone,it doesn’t matter who or where you are..everyone is at risk by the fear of death itself ….do not just focus on a farm somewhere in the US and get side tracked by that “fear the living” governor BS..guess what in this world right now we already “fear the living” it’s nothing new to a desensitized nation..don’t believe me.. turn on the news..
The governor character needs to be executed, and move on with the bigger picture, the picture of life and adventure the unexpected of what’s around the next corner or behind the next door.. because this thing is bigger..much bigger than arguments/disputes/wars between the living.
my advice…start terrifying your audience on a global scale.

    • “Why? because this is true horror of what made the whole zombie genre a success in the first place and why it appeals to everyone”

That is just not true. It does not appeal to everyone, far from it. And that is not what Romero was aiming for in any of his movies, the point always was that “we” are “them”. Which is even stated in the comic book openly, and more subtly in the show. As for killing the governor… don’t you know he is one of the fan favorites in the show?

      • Sorry, what i meant is of course it doesn’t appeal to everyone, my gran doesn’t like it for example., maybe a wrong choice of words.
The point is “we” are all going to die whether we like it or not, you name me someone that cannot die and who is not afraid of it at some point in their life, this is the embodiment of the zombie genre, and what Romero was exactly trying to do .. Night of the living dead starts in a graveyard.. what else do you think he was trying to tell us..?
My point about the governor, he has become more of a threat to the group than the walkers. i feel as a “horror fan” it should be the other way around.
Will “The governor” spawn his own special genre of horror, and be able to spin off new future shows/movies/comic books?. the Answer is NO.
So this is my point about focusing on the bigger picture, more on walkers as being the greatest threat to everyone. i believe what will drive the genre/TV Show forward.
not stuck in some Prison “gesturing” to each other, i’m going to shoot you!, no i’ll shoot you first! ..ect..ect.. blah blah..who cares?
I do not need the walking dead to deliver this to me,i have CNN and reality for that, but unfortunately it gets steady ratings and keeps generic viewers tuning into the next episode.
Killing off a major character is good for ratings and to be honest i wanted it to happen at the end of Welcome to the Tombs, not drag out for another season… it is also a shock gimmick.
Throw in the odd mutilated walker now and then, to keep us core horror fans happy right? amazing work from the effects team btw…. but..so what??..you have shifted the focus off walkers now they are absolutely no threat to me…not important…this weakens the genre not strengthens it.
Focus on the core horror foundations laid down by Romero.
        “They’re coming for you Barbra”
        Kill the governor

        • Idk…I like the governor he adds that craziness that the world has created…he kills everybody now and turned merle into a zombie…that hurt…just when merle was starting to act human…lol. But Carl is a growing character Lori said to him dont let the world change you…dah the world is made of zombies…changed…and Rick needs to save Andrea from Milton I hope she killed him…I cant see Andrea getting killed by Milton’s Zombie character not after all shes been thru with the governor. I would like to see the governor continue to chase Rick and his group…lol. They need to get out of the prison find another place but were is the question…the governor has killed off most in his lovely town…The governor is needed cant just to watch a bunch of zombies only…in the original walking dead mankind the living did win in the end…BRING SHANE BACK! Luvd him..thats who the govenor needs to deal with…Shane come back.

        • Yeah… Exactly what I’m thinking and hoping that the group will move on. Hopefully the zombies will be a greater threat and not as lame as they have been!! The governor, never liked him as a villain. Maybe its the actor himself that wasn’t right for this role. Anyways, I’m happy that the show is continuing:-D God bless TWD

  26. Daryl dixion is a bad ass

  27. A HALF YEAR? :(

    Cant wait

    • Till what

  28. The walking dead is the best show that has come on so far

  29. But normally you can already watch the season 4. I do not know why everyone is looking forward to October … Come on in and see what Rick will do with my son.
