[SPOILERS ahead for The Walking Dead up to season 4, episode 10.]

With so many corpses wandering around, AMC’s The Walking Dead can benefit from a brisk spring-cleaning every now and then to freshen things up. As the second half of season 4 gets under way, much of the prison population has been turned into zombie food and the end of last week’s episode, ‘Inmates,’ saw the arrival of three new characters who have been plucked from the pages of Robert Kirkman’s comics.

Michael Cudlitz (Southland) plays Abraham Ford, a former army sergeant and sports coach who has formed a small survivor group alongside his lover, Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos), and science expert Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt). The three of them ran into Tara and Glenn in the aftermath of a walker attack, but their degree of friendliness was left pretty ambiguous.

In an interview with THR, Cudlitz has offered some insights into the three new characters and how close their portrayal is to the comic books. Cudlitz says that he was originally sent the script for The Walking Dead‘s pilot episode before the show was even cast and that he thought it was “awesome,” but only got caught up with the comics once he was offered the role. Apparently there’s a lot in the upcoming episodes that will be familiar to fans of the source material:

“A lot of things happen in the comic that affect how he operates and how he moves through this world and the decisions he makes. A lot of that is ripped directly from the comics, as well as the whole chunk of time where the comic left off and where we meet them now. There are some elements that they’ve introduced that will make Abraham’s back story that much more tragic.

“All three of those characters are going to seem extremely familiar to those who know the comics. They’re almost exact up to the point where we meet them. Where they go from here, we’ll all learn that together.”

Rosita and Abraham have romantic reasons to want to stick together, but their relationship to Eugene is somewhat more complicated. Unlike most of the characters in The Walking Dead, these three have a clear destination in mind: Washington, D.C. There, they believe, lies the key to ending the zombie apocalypse and returning things to normal:

“You know they’re headed for Washington but the audience will learn all that in the next episode as to where they’re going, why they think they’re going there, what information Eugene has and that Abraham and Rosita believe him. There is no subtlety in it. It’s this wonderful expositional moment that’s literally ripped out of the comics where you meet these people, learn who they are as individuals and what they need from anyone else — and you better f—ing be on board, because you don’t have a choice!”

With all the death and despair going on, The Walking Dead can be quite a bleak and depressing show, so it’s something of a relief that Cudlitz promises a few laughs at Abraham, Eugene and Rosita’s interactions. He describes them as having a “bickering, strange hierarchy and weird group dynamic that we have not seen before,” and if the three actors have good chemistry then this could be exactly the kind of spark that The Walking Dead needs to stay lively.

Abraham in particular is described as having the kind of brusque manner that one might expect from a former army sergeant, and he’s rarely in the mood for naval-gazing:

“They’re not locked in this day-to-day rhetorical self-examination of life and what does it all mean…  Abraham is more like, ‘By the time you all have your f—ing meeting, I’ll have handled it already.’ They are not a Boy Scout Troop…

“He’s not necessarily someone who is going to be the king — or someone you’d even want to be the king — he’s the guy you’d want as your first, the guy leading a section of a larger plan. Ultimately, he’s good for [Rick's] group because there are a lot of reluctant leaders and people doing what they have to do. Abraham is a leader by nature; he’s not reluctant about it.”

Although The Walking Dead has definitely had its share of major deaths, there seems to be a very small group of characters – Rick, Carl and Daryl in particular – who feel like they’re going to be around for the long haul. With his training and skills Abraham definitely sounds like a survivor, but we’ll have to wait and see what kind of path the rest of the season takes him down.

  1. This is the badass Walking Dead fans have been waiting for; myself included. Daryl is cool and all, but he’s not as badass as Abraham.

    • Unless they teddy-bear him like they did Tyrese.

  2. I do hope they don’t kill off Abraham in the show.

  3. Whats Rick & Abraham’s relationship like from the comics? Do they get along or is kinda like Shane vs. Rick again. Does’t Rick get a GF in the comics aswell? Sunday’s episode was great now Carol is back, cant’t wait to see how the truth comes to Tyrese.

People thought Carl had issues, id say it’s Lizzie who has some all along. I wonder how long it will be till the show shows Lizzie’s problem & who finds out about it.

    • **SPOILERS**
Rick and Abraham actually seem to get along better than rick and shane ever did oddly in the comics. Rick actually gets with andrea in the comics so we know that won’t be happening lol

Yea that was a little rough to watch lizzie and the baby scene while my 5 month old son is laying in my arms. It made me hope they take her out lol

What I actually don’t like about the Abraham on the show is his voice. He sounds just monotone. I guess I always envisioned him with a rougher grumbly voice. Or at least just more badass. It’ll be interesting to see if his acting gets better also.

      • lol thanks for the info but dont say u hope the actors acting will improve just because the image you portrayed in ur head from the comic book character doesn’t suit someone you seen onscreen for less then 10 seconds

      • I agree on his voice being monotonous

    • Lizzie and her sisters story arc will end up being what the little brothers were in the comic I think.

Remember that furry art project in the prison.

  4. Personally, I just can’t see Daryl living much longer in the show. He wasn’t in the comics, meaning he doesn’t have any storylines that fans previously know and are begging to see. Now that they’ve brought in Abraham and Michonne, they don’t really need another macho man (which is all Daryl has been recently.) And don’t get me wrong, I love Daryl and would hate if he died, but his character is just seeming more and more pointless.

  5. I have never read a Walking Dead comic. So who is Abraham? Is he the next series Antagonist after the Governor is zombie food?
Or is he the new leader now after Rick has split?

    • No he is not the next antagonist. (at least in the comics he was not)
SPOILERS for people who havent read comics***

Abraham basically meets up with Rick them after the whole thing in the prison has gone down. He is considered as Rick’s “right hand man” since in the comics Tyresse was his right hand guy for a while then he got killed. Then came Abraham and he basically filled that role in. Kind of.

      • Cheers mate !

      • Also, the next main antagonist won’t be showing up for a while. But until he decides to show up, there is this group called The Hunters who will pose a threat very soon. If the show wants to go with that story arc.

After that, you’ll meet a lot of allies until the next big bad makes his appearance.

  6. IF liz goes through the “brothers” comic story arc , I hope Carl is around to put her down like a sick dog

  7. Christian Serratos, who is playing Rosita, is so hot…

    • fyi she played Angela in the Twilight series.

  8. the writer says they feel as if daryl is sticking for the long haul. to me daryl and Abraham seem somewhat similar, gruff, unapologetic, militarized types. one of them would seem to have to get cut loose unless the show’s going to get into cloning existing personalities.

  9. I enjoy Michael Cudlitz’s acting, so he’s a welcome addition to the cast for me. I know nothing about his character though having never read any of the comics. But I know he can act like a military Sgt. character for sure.

  10. Yey. Wonder if the sanctuary place is the community. Or maybe its just a series only thing.

  11. Couple of things to ask of you ladies and gents as I have not read the comics of The Walking Dead…. Does Bob Stookey become a bad guy as every time he is on screen I just get this feeling..? I think Carol will end up taking little Lizzy out and Rick will be like ‘told you kids are too young to train, i was right’. Does Rick get with Michonne in the comics? (I certainly would, she is hot).

    • Hard to say what they are going to do with Bob. In the comics, since you asked, Bob was Woodbury’s former combat vet town drunk and an old white guy. Obviously here they’ve played the predictably polar opposite character points like they have with many characters by making him a younger African American former combat medic struggling with a propensity toward alcohol who came in after Woodbury fell.

      • Cheers Chance

  12. MP5? no AK? :(

  13. oh great, Steven Seagal, Paul Teutul, why are they so clean.

  14. supposedly brighton sharbino ( lizzie ) didn’t receive death threats after Sunday’s episode. considering the losers populating the planet nowadays, that was shocking to me. though I wonder if that would have been the case if she brought harm to daryl.
