The Walking Dead season 3 has officially begun, taking Rick and the survivors into their most dangerous environment yet, the prison. But how many more years of adventures can we expect from AMC’s hit series? That answer, unfortunately, depends on which producer you ask.

Speaking with Daily Dead, producer Gale Anne Hurd opened up about the potential future of the series – as well as how long she feels the series should continue – taking into account creator Robert Kirkman’s plans for The Walking Dead comic book.

Hurd, knowing all of the storylines the comic book explores, feels as if there’s more than enough content in the source material to continue the series for the foreseeable future:

There is so much rich material to draw from and so many fantastic characters. There are so many different situations and characters to join our survivors, as well as [characters] to be pitted against them… I think there is no limit. There is certainly no limit to the comic book series and Robert has probably 250 [issues] figured out.

However, before any Walking Dead fans jump for joy about the “no limit” comment, it should be noted that executive producer Glen Mazzara had previously stated that, even though Kirkman’s source material is rich with stories, he has an ending planned for the series, as any television show can only last for so long. With a set amount of stories he wants to tell, Mazzara sees the series reaching season 7.

Even though Hurd knows that 7 seasons is what could likely happen for the show, she believes that her previous experience in film has given her a different perspective on the future of The Walking Dead:

I think much bigger and maybe it’s my feature film background. Seven isn’t nearly enough…

All things said, Hurd’s comments about the 7 season plan is absolutely true, but only when pairing it with the comic book. Kirkman has previously stated that, because The Walking Dead is a story about survival, the comic could potentially continue indefinitely. And with the popularity of the comics growing each year, it’s very likely that “indefinitely” is the current plan for the source material.

Television, however, is much more finicky, with viewers coming and going as tastes and trends change. Even though The Walking Dead has more than enough established storylines (via the comic book) to currently present audiences with eighteen seasons of show, many television producers see each season as a miracle, never knowing when, or if, the viewers’ love for the series will wane. Television’s graveyard is currently filled with more than enough once-popular television series being upended and canceled, many of which continued beyond their collective welcome.

Then again, The Walking Dead is not like any other television series, as its storylines and character moments have already stood the test of an opinionated – and much finickier – comic book audiences. So while some series degrade as they age, The Walking Dead has a succinct storyline already prepared, simply awaiting being told.

Like with most things, time will reveal all. Still, if The Walking Dead continues to evolve each season, there’s no doubt that it can hit that season 7 goal. But the question is: If that happens, will you still be watching it?

Then again, if the show wears thin, there’s always that Walking Dead movie that could potentially continue the story.

  1. as for me i will like the walking dead season 5 and 6 to 7 should continue i really want to keep watching it

  2. I want the walking dead to do at least 7 season but i will never stop watching the walking dead even when they stop

  3. I freaking love THE WALKING DEAD!! And yes! Please keep it going, I would love to see more than season 7 but ill tak it!(:
the walking dead is the most realistic suspenseful series I have ever seen! Every episode has me on my toes thinking 3 seconds ahead! Yes please keep going, the walking dead will always be watched ever AFTER it ends! 😀

    • Couldn’t have put it better!

  4. Definitely think they should continue the story, best by far for a tv series can’t wait for the new one to air, so excited!!

  5. I can honestly say the walking dead is by far the best thing that has been on telly!!! its just amazing im so hooked that after iv watched it from season 1-3 I just start over again. I never get bored of it!! The cast is great absolutely love it. X

  6. I want the series to run forever, but for the love of god, KILL RICK’S KID ALREADY! he’s the only character that spoils the whole show!

    • Give him time. He slowly becomes a badass who’s probably more capable of making the right decisions than even Rick.

Rick will eventually die in the comics, and Carl will take over. Watch.

  7. 7 seasons no way. The show should keep running until the airwaves go down after we face an actual zombie apocalypse and there is no TS-19 to save our butts!!! Best show everrr. Breaking bad was great. God bless. But NOTHING comes close to THE WALKING DEAD. And nothing EVER will. Keep up the great work ! Thanks for putting out the Sunday night couch super glue! It works great. Better than that loser Phil swift and his flex seal. Hope his screen door boat sinks.

  8. Yes the show should go on. I love the walking dead I would like to see the little ass kicker grow up and hunt walkers lol. Btw I would also like to see some sort of cross in the walking dead and the up coming sister series not a huge cross just something simple. The show must go on

  9. Yeh I like to see the walking dead go beyond season 7. This is the best tv show yet about zombies and people trying to survive. Im ready for the season 4 season premire tonight.

  10. Yes, it should. I mean, look at ABC’s show Lost. It went for 6 years. Before the walking dead i was HOOKED on Lost. I even still to this day watch it over and over again on Netflix. The Walking Dead, in my opinion, will and should be just like Lost. After it’s over, people will still be going back and watching all the seasons all over again. The Walking Dead is one of the best shows out there. If you go on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. there are so many fan pages. I really hope they do continue the series for about 8 seasons, or even more. I want them to go all the way up to when the apocalypse is over, and they’re the only one’s left so they have to start all over again. & all of this is coming from an 18 year old girl. Seriously, AMC keep doing your thing and make everyone happy.

  11. if they say it has the potential to reach 18 seasons I say why not its not like I got any other show that I really care about more than a bunch people who struggle to survive a zombie apocalypse

  12. As successful as the show has been so far and to keep pace with the comics, I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes 10 seasons or more.

  13. I have never been into watching series until my husband brought home the walking dead. I was immediately captured and I’m completely hooked! Please keep this series running until you can’t anymore! Suspense is amazing!

  15. Hello, my name is Joao Silva. I live in Lincoln
Ca. and im 29 years old. The reason for my
email is to hopefully persue my dreams and
become an Actor. I think i would make a
good character on the West Coast Version of
Walking Dead. Ive never quite had the
opprutunity to go after my dreams after
highschool because i had to make money, so
I became a Union Carpenter. I got straight
A`s in all my performing arts classes in
school and have a great fun loving
personality. I would also be willing to work
for next to nothing and wouldnt change my
mind about it ever. Please give me a shot,
thank you in advance for your consideration.

  16. Despite how I would love to see this show going past season 7, but I think it’s really all up to 3 things:

    1) Ratings. No matter how good a show is, at one point or another, the show’s rating will eventually dip into the average and they would just decide right there and then that they should end the series soon and move onto something else.

    2) Money. Unfortunately, as soon as the ratings were to dip, AMC and whoever financially funds this show probably just won’t think it’s worth keeping the show going.

    3) Too many cast replacements. If too many of the casts that the viewers likes continues to die off in the series, then if the series was starting to lack the appropriate story lines that still made the series interesting, then I doubt the show is even worth funding anymore.

So bottom line, no matter what everybody things, I think the show is going to weigh heavily on the ratings and funding obviously.

  17. oohhh yes… one of the best shows ever… but i prefer less ppl dying !! cant take it anymre wid fav characters vanishing especially daryl !!!

  18. Walking Dead is the best show and only one that I have really gotten into heavily since lost. Iraq didn’t stop me from seeing new lost episodes weekly and now walking dead has got me from day one!! Do it right and they can go for along time!! much better than ER (tho that show was good) and they was on for 15 seasons.

  19. If you end the walking dead then you’re basically ending my happiness you feel me

  20. Stories, Ratings, Money,

If they keep writing stories I will keep watching and tell others to watch, they should keep making money.

    Best series ever

  21. I´m a big fan, `The Walking Dead` is great and i hope it continues for a long time, or better does never stop. The man who had the idea is a genius. Keep it up.

We still have to see what happens to carl and lil ass kicker I mean morgan is still alive when will he be back? JUST KEEP THE WALKING DEAD ON THE NUMBER ONE SHOW WATCHED ON AMC

  25. Never stop the walking dead many generations will watch it until it actually happens then we will have stragitys

  26. Please Please Please keep them going!! I look forward every week to the show, its the best and i would be devastated if it ended anytime soon.. :) Everyone i know watches it and it would be dumb to end it with all the ratings its getting, its just THAT good!! Love it :)

  28. Defintly want to see more seasons than 7 the characters events and places are endless to go with walking dead has set records lets set more records and set a record for longest series ever and make it almost impossible to ever beat thanks guys I enjoy so much
