It’s been over a month since the curtain fell on the first season of The Walking Dead, but after racking up a Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama Series, as well as a spot on Screen Rant’s Best TV Moments of 2010 list, AMC’s critically acclaimed zombie-drama is just getting started.

Today we’ve got fresh details on what to expect from The Walking Dead Season 1 DVD and Blu-ray releases – as well as word from the series’ creator (and executive producer) regarding where the show is headed in season 2.

At the beginning of December we took a look back at season 1 of The Walking Dead, as well as speculated on some of the more subtle moments of the series to forecast what writer-director, Frank Darabont, might focus on in season 2 – specifically fan-favorite villain, The Governor.

Recently, Walking Dead creator, Robert Kirkman, spoke with USA Today, and revealed that while The Governor is certainly on their radar – as far as season 2 is concerned, the series will actually introduce viewers to a fan-favorite hero instead:

“Frank has already hinted at the fact that we’ll be seeing Michonne as early as Season 2. The Governor is probably a little ways off from Season 2 — maybe Season 3 or beyond.”

For anyone unfamiliar with The Walking Dead comic series, Michonne is an especially mysterious member of Rick’s survivor group – a woman in her late 20s or early 30s who dispatches the undead with a katana blade.

Adding Michonne to the cast could also indicate that season 2 will feature “The Prison,” an important setting in the comic series (Michonne was introduced just outside the prison walls). However, anything is possible, since Darabont has already made alterations to The Walking Dead, in order to set the TV series apart from the comic.

Since the The Walking Dead season 2 isn’t set to premiere until October 2011, there’s still plenty of time for more details but, in the mean time, fans of the show will undoubtedly be excited to pick apart the special features on the upcoming season 1 DVD and Blu-ray – set for release on March 8th, 2011.

The season 1 set, released by Anchor Bay Entertainment will include the six episodes from seasons, as well as the aforementioned special features, for $39.98 on DVD and $49.99 on Blu-ray. Obviously, at this point, little is known about the length, or quality, of the special features – and it’s hard to determine how satisfying the offerings will be for series’ fans.

That said, considering the brief length of season 1, hopefully the special features will be enough to justify the cost (the same cost as other TV releases with twice as many episodes – such as Breaking Bad Season 2) – though it’s hard to imagine Walking Dead fans being able to resist shambling to their local big-box retailer to chew-up every last piece of AMC’s critically acclaimed zombie-drama.
