Fans of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead franchise are no doubt well versed in the lore and post-apocalyptic landscape of the comic book writer’s particular take on the zombie genre of supernatural-horror fiction via the comic book panel, television, and even the video game medium. Ever since publisher Image Comics released the first volume of Kirkman’s sprawling opus in 2003, zombie enthusiasts have found a veritable successor to the likes of George A. Romero – and in the former writer’s Southern sensibilities, a novel entry point into a tale seemingly already well told by the latter big screen auteur.
What’s more, video game developer and publisher Telltale Games has seen fit to expound upon the world primarily established by Kirkman in their unique series of point-and-click adventure titles that have become more than popularly among gamers. The first six minutes of gameplay for the latest Walking Dead Telltale Miniseries, featuring Michonne, has now been released online.
As seen in the video featured above, and as promised earlier last week, the first sequence from the forthcoming miniseries The Walking Dead: Michonne is now available to view in full online, following the official unveiling from the game’s team of developers. The first episode of the three part minieseries, titled “In Too Deep”, will follow the singular journey of fan favorite character Michonne during her absence of the comic books between volumes 126 and 139, and will see the beloved heroine aboard Pete Anderson’s ship The Companion as they embark upon a daring rescue mission amid the floating colony of Monroe. The series will be made available to purchase starting with the first episode on February 23rd, followed by episodes two and three sometime in March and April respectively, for the sum total of $14.99 USD.
Based on the footage released thus far, The Walking Dead: Michonne should offer fans of the franchise plenty of reason to make an investment in the latest original title from Telltale, as the level of psychological horror intimated in the first six minutes apparently serve to highlight the most revealing portraiture of Michonne yet. Played by television actor Samira Wiley (Orange is the New Black), this latest offering of her take on the original comic book protagonist should be a thrilling bit of fan service for those eager to know why the character briefly left the company of Rick Grimes and the rest of her trusted compatriots in the Walking Dead TV series.
Given that Telltale’s original series of games based in Kirkman’s world of The Walking Dead has sold over 50 million individual units to date, and has subsequently earned more than 100 Game of the Year awards since the release of the first series in 2012, The Walking Dead: Michonne should offer more of the same caliber of quality video game storytelling. And as an added bonus to those viewers concurrently watching the sixth season of the AMC Walking Dead series on TV following its mid-series premiere, Telltale’s latest offering can only add more involvement in Kirkman’s imaginative landscape for fans to enjoy.
The Walking Dead: Michonne mini-series will be available on February 23rd, 2016 on PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360, followed by compatible releases on iOS devices via the Apple Store and Android-based devices via Google Play and the Amazon App Store starting on February 25th, 2016.
