Cloud Atlas helped to restore the faith in filmmakers Andy and Lana Wachowski (among those few who saw it, anyway…), and so there’s more excitement for their upcoming project, Jupiter Ascending, an original piece of science-fiction that will harken back to their Matrix trilogy – by combining cutting-edge effects, action and spectacle with an imaginative mythos and philosophical overtones.

Principal photography began earlier this month, at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in London, but we’ve just today received a press release that formally announces the start of filming, in addition to a synopsis that confirms (some of) the intriguing details from the Wachowskis’ script that we’ve reported in the past.

Here is the synopsis for Jupiter Ascending:

From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, Jupiter Ascending was conceived and written by the Wachowskis, who are also directing. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom the writer/directors have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing the film together with the Wachowskis. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman are serving as executive producers.

Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along – her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

This information falls is line with previous descriptions, which pegged Kunis as the Snow White figure to Tatum’s genetically-altered huntsman, who is hired by a higher-evolved being known as the Queen of the Universe (e.g. the “Evil Queen”) to murder the human woman (Miss Jones) who threatens to end her reign.

The Wachowskis established trends in both the sci-fi and action genres, back when The Matrix broke new technical and creative ground in 1999. As was brought up during last week’s Screen Rant Underground Podcast, that influence should continue with this summer’s Superman movie reboot Man of Steel (drawing from the Neo/Smith battle in The Matrix Revolutions); not to mention, similarities between the futuristic segments of Cloud Atlas and director M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming post-apocalyptic blockbuster After Earth, which goes to show that the filmmaking siblings remain ahead of the curve.

Rounding out the Jupiter Ascending cast are Sean Bean (Game of Thrones), Eddie Redmayne (Les Misérables), Doona Bae (Cloud Atlas), Douglas Booth (Romeo and Juliet), Tuppence Middleton (Trance), Tim Pigott-Smith (The Hour) and James D’Arcy (another Cloud Atlas alum).

Look for Jupiter Ascending in 2D, 3D and IMAX theaters on July 25th, 2014.

  1. Any ideas on how Sean Bean will die in this film?

    • BEST…. COMMENT…. EVER!!!!!!

  2. Damn i have to support C.Tatum on this movie.

  3. The plot sounds pretty derivative but it may end up being more than the sum of its parts with the talent attached to it… Reading the synopsis it reminded me of The Last Starfighter a bit and also the New Seoul segment of Cloud Atlas.

    • I’m hoping this will be similar to the Matrix trilogy which took the standard “chosen one”/hero’s journey tropes and took them in a new direction. On the surface, yeah, that description sounds fairly derivative.

  4. Interesting, I hope it’s a good film like “The Matrix” is.

    • In that it was refreshing at the time and amazing visually or do you want it to be completely like The Matrix and fail to stand the test of time and look fairly dated years after release?

      • I want it to be completely different. Give us something new & exciting without doing a rehash of “The Matrix” That’s all.

  5. Let’s start with “Jupiter Jones”.

Sounds like Cleopatra Jones’ younger sister. “Jones” is a fine name like “Smith” but it takes no chance on imagination. Could this be a harbinger of what’s to come beyond the synopsis? It’s like, “Let’s get the story out of the way, so we can have some fun.”

The synopsis (like SNOW WHITE, of course, THE TERMINATOR, and even THE MATRIX itself) attempts zero effort toward forming a new narrative concept, which means the real story will be the technology deployed for the film.

And then there’s CLOUD ATLAS from the filmmakers who gave you MATRIX REVOLUTION.

You know, in commenting here on Screen Rant, you try like hell not to be too earnest or too snarky but….

    • Agent Smith’s name is an allusion to Isaiah 54:16, which is referenced by a license plate seen briefly in second film. “Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.”
The name “Jupiter”, has significance in addition to being a planet in our solar system(remember the rumors that the film will feature a war between colonies based on different planets in the solar system) It may have some mythological significance similar to how Morpheus was named after the Greek god of dreams, or Persephone was named after the consort of the king of the underworld. The synopsis specifies that she was born “under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things.” In astrology, one who is born under “Jupiter Rising” or “Jupiter Ascending” is thought to be destined to break boundaries and transcend limitations. Of course, this could all be coincidence and the Wachowskis could be spitting names out of a random name generator so they can focus all their effort on special effects…

  6. I hated Cloud Atlas! Lets hope this one is better.

    • Cloud Atlas was a great movie, far ahead of its time. Great casting, great mix of genres, themes threated with fairness and without taboo.

Anyway, I hope Jupiter ascending won’t be a box office bomb like Cloud Atlas was. The Wachowski brothers still have potential, as they already showed it with Cloud Atlas.

      • the “Wachowski siblings”, not “brothers”.

  7. Jupiter Jones is a great name. Story has been done before but I’ll watch, I like Mila, Channing and Sean. The latter is only there to die of course.

  8. I wonder if either of these jokers are old Planetfall fans? The story sounds a touch like the Space Quest games too. A janitor becomes a hero!? Check this remake…

  9. I’m going to put my faith in The Wachowski’s. The Matrix is still my all-time favorite sci-fi film

  10. In a interview with Collider.com (also video) Channing Tatum revealed a little about his character in Jupiter Ascending.

“I’m a splice, splices are essentially built in a test tube. I’m a hybrid wolf and human. And half albino, so I’m a little defective.”

Also stated that there is little or no digital stuntman. Says it’s been a tough shoot.

Really looking forward to this film.

  11. It is worth noting that the Wachowskis (or their studio’s advisors) often use astrologically significant dates for their movies’ opening dates. “Jupiter Ascending” was initially set for the 25th July 2014 (perfect conjunction of Sun and Jupiter) and is now set for the 6th February 2015 (perfect opposition of Sun and Jupiter). The incredible “Matrix” (31 March 1999) was also set in a conjunction between Sun and Jupiter (Jupiter, the “kingly planet”, is considered by astrologers to be the luckiest planet, signifying wide reputation and success).

The title of the Wachowskis new movie itself (“Jupiter Ascending”) is purely astrological, dealing with the royal nature of Jupiter Jones. Her great destiny is described as having far reaching implications that extend beyond Earth, one that bears the indisputable seal of planet Jupiter’s archetype.

  12. Channing Tatum was a horrible choice, now that he was casted for this I don’t want to see it
