I agree. It needs to adhere to the old cartoons. Otherwise, it isn't Voltron, but something else. The way the old cartoons played out, is what made Voltron different from anything else, and what made it stand up as a lasting property, against competitors like Robotech, TF's, GoBots, etc.

However, I would change one thing. And one thing only. Something that always bugged me to no end... The mismatch of the uniforms.

It was never truly clear at any point in the old cartoons, why Keith wore the Red but piloted the Black, Lance wore the Blue but piloted the Red, and Sven wore the Black but piloted the Blue. Only Pidge and Hunk wore the correct matching colors.

Is it just me? or did this ever bother anyone else?

I wanted to believe that the original intention was for Sven to lead the team in the Black Lion, with Lance in the Blue Lion, and Keith in the Red Lion. But maybe at the last minute, and after already choosing and sizing their uniforms, Sven cracked under the pressure to lead, taking a lesser role in the Blue Lion.

This theory would make sense, except for 2 problems: 1) Why wouldn't they eventually correct the uniform mismatch after an episode or two, to reflect the new positions, instead of carrying on this mismatch throughout the entire series? and 2) There was never anything to support or contradict this theory either way (to my knowledge).

In a live-action film, I wouldn't make this mistake... and to avoid--or downplay at least--the issue of what uniform color for what person, I would just have them wear standard issue dark gray or black pilot suits, with the only distinguishable colors being in the activation key... and maybe the helmets.

That would certainly avoid any fuss about color assignment... and besides, you wouldn't want them to be wearing the old cartoon uniforms anyway. They would get so dirty very quickly. Remember all that white? Can you imagine trying to KEEP all that white... white? And if you tried to clean them, the color could most likely bleed into the white. It just isn't realistic or practical. Ask anyone who has worn a uniform. Reality comes first if you want a realistic movie.

I'm sure Marvel realized the same thing when planning the first X-Men movie ("What did you expect? Yellow spandex?").

What do you all think?

I think Voltron is long overdue. However, in fear of looking too much like Transformers, I think it would look good as an animated film. Animated as in Final Fantasy animated. And I agree with most that the script should not stray at all from the cartoon. Speaking of long overdue films, anyone heard of a ThunderCats movie? I'd like to see one out before I die. ;)

And Haggar needs to magically seperate the mighty GoLion (oops) into 5 lionbots. Sven needs to survive instead of die a horrible death (GoLion). And it must all happen on and around Arus and planet Doom. No Earth unless they have asides to Galaxy Garrison. Maybe show Dairugger XV (oops Voltron I) and Albegas (er Voltron II) for geekness in vid screen monitors.

Just an idea.....

But first I'd rather see an actual Kidou Senshi Gundam 0079 movie, not G Saviour like but actually faithful to the anime, manga and Bandai kits. The video game CG cut scenes are always so awesome, they can do that in a live action movie.

And please don't let anyone else but the Japanese produce that Gundam film.

Essex, that might be a valid approach, but that's not what they're doing. They're using, nominally anyway, the same characters from the original series. That would make for an incredible coincidence if you had two teams of pilots with the same names.

In addition, the idea was that Voltron was a legend, not truly confirmed until they found him. If Voltron had been on Earth, and not Arus, there would have been records confirming its existence.

This movie is poorly written, and it is not faithful to the source material. Regardless of what you've heard about it, this script, as it currently stands, does not come across the way you're trying to look at it.

I think you're all looking at this the wrong way. This is the creation of Voltron, which means they can place any team in there to pilot them. If you watched the old cartoons, in the first cartoon the five pilots were dispatched to loacte where Voltron went down. It had already been piloted by another team. They were just sent to locate what happened to it and get it back up and running. There was another team before Keith's. Starting at the beginning is a good start.

While I agree with you on that point, Wade, I can't say that's the biggest problem this movie has at the moment. That dishonor lies with the script.

This is NOT good news. This movie is straying too far from the elements that made Voltron what it was. They either need to fix the script, or let the project die.
