[Update: The Voltron movie is still in development. Details HERE.]

It’s been a tumultuous journey to the big screen for the live-action Voltron movie – and for the moment, that journey has come to an end.

Back in April it was announced that the project was entering reboot mode by tossing out all prior versions of the screenplay and searching for a new director. Max Makowski (Taboo) had been attached to direct up until that point, and Jeff Davis (Criminal Minds) had done a rewrite on a script by Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li).

The project was initially set-up at 20th Century Fox.  They later dropped the film and Relativity Media stepped in with plans to produce it on a more modest budget. It was at this stage that Marks was brought onboard to pen the screenplay. Relativity was not able to get the project off the ground before their option expired and the film wound up at Atlas Entertainment.

Now, Collider is reporting that Voltron rights holders World Events Productions and Classic Media are scrapping plans for the film altogether and focusing instead on their new animated series and toy line. The cartoon, titled Voltron Force, will debut on Nicktoons next year with 26 half-hour episodes. The original characters will return, but they’ll be teaming up with new recruits.

A new line of toys will coincide with the cartoon’s premiere and feature classic versions of the figures and playsets, as well as more modern, “edgier” versions. Thundercats, another iconic 80’s cartoon property, recently took a similar approach to relaunching its brand.  If the new Voltron cartoon and toys are successful it will no doubt bring a renewed interest in a feature film version, but for the moment don’t expect to see Voltron in theaters anytime soon.

According to Variety, the producers of Voltron claim they were never able to “lock down the right tone” for the live-action movie.

How do you feel about this decision? Is a new animated series a welcome addition to the Voltron mythology or did you have your heart set on a live-action film?

  1. Personally I thought I live action movie would have been neato as long as they found a nice balance of Speed Racer style colorfulness and fun without all the camp and cheese.
Remember when the first Cloverfield teaser came out and there was a rumor it was Voltron?
    I would have loved that.

  2. I wanted to see a live-action film, but I knew with all the recent troubles that it wasn’t gonna happen.

    • this is not acceptable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. They can come up with Transformers but not Voltron? Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to see what the new toons look like. DRAT!!

  4. As long as it is the version of Voltron with the lions, I am down with that.

    • I want a voltron live action movie as well as a cartoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. At least they’re making a cartoon.

    • Rest assured everyone, there WILL be a voltron feature in the near future, a little birdy advised me that a brand new screenplay is on the way. Fingers crossed everyone.

    • they cancelled the 2012 cartoon so this is just a waste!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! bring the movie.

  6. I really hope they get more into the Keith and Allura relationship…I’ve been DYING for them to actually be together!!!!!!!!!

  7. Well… I hope that this new toon wont be like the lame HeMan knockoff that came out a couple years ago. That was awful…By the power of Eternia??? WTF was that??? LOL ! They should just digitally enhance the old Voltron toons and release that.

  8. its goign to be on nicktoons for kids means no relationship
its a classic cartoon without all the sex junk they should keep it that way for kids keep it clean
cant be on nicktoons and having relationships involved the kids dont need another sex cartoon out there

  9. Geez, ppl have such low standards these days. Voltron was the butchered up anime Go-lion (with was MUCH better and more graphic)and the Voltron 3-d show was retarded. Why do I wanna see more?
If ur gonna do a movie at least follow the show, that last script was waaaaaay off

    • voltron movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      voltron movie!!!!!!!!!!

      voltron movie!!!!!!!!

      voltron movie!!!!!!!!

      voltron movie!!!!!!!!

      voltron movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. A movie will be great when they find someone to write a proper script, not the one that’s a copy of Transformers’.
What’s that about action taking place on Earth, Arus destroyed and Hunk being Allura’s bodyguard? Well, you don’t have to make it a children’s story but still there must be other similarities except names >:(
I think if they went on like this they would end up losing any connection with Voltron…
I’d better wait till they really want to do it – not just make money on it. When they have money and some imagination, too…
The same goes for animated series. If they don’t change the characters and atmosphere completely (as it is often done nowadays) I will certainly enjoy watching it.

  11. I loved it

    • I’ll be waiting for the movie.

  12. I’m all for them doing a live action movie but it needs to be done right if they are going to do it at all. None of this copying the robotic stylings of the Transformers movie like the recent concept art we’ve seen and there should be some tie-in to Earth and the other Voltron teams (or at least mention of them) but they need to not bring the lion team to Earth. Honestly, this would be better handled by the folks who originally did the Go Lion series or at least have them on board as consultants. I’m just thankful that the live action Space Battleship Yamato wasn’t handled by an american production team and I’m extremely worried about how butchered Voltron will be with Americans at the helm, both with a movie and with the new cartoon series.

  13. I would rather see the original version with a few upgrades. It was a great series no need for a overhaul. Feel the same about Thundercats

    • this is a shame, they should still make a movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. plz plz plz i beg u ppl to get more episodes of voltron force or make a movie …. this is not acceptable!! :(
