Vlad the Impaler Vlad To Reimagine Draculas Early Days [Updated]

[Update: EW has confirmed that Vlad will NOT have Vampires]

Christmas has come early for those of you desperately wishing for just one more story about vampires.  Heat Vision reports that the folks behind The Twilight Saga, Summit Entertainment, are putting together a project called Vlad, centering around the early years of Vlad the Impaler, who was the inspiration for the original Dracula myth.

More post-jump…

Plan B, aka Brad Pitt’s production company, will be producing the film and Dede Gardner and Pitt are listed as co-producers.  The script was penned by Charlie Hunnam, who we’ve seen as Jackson Teller on Sons of Anarchy on FX and the film will be directed by Anthony Mandler, who’s done music videos for Eminem, Rihanna and The Killers.  Collider tells us this will be an action-adventure film and that Summit was already developing the project but it got an energy boost when Mandler came on board.

No word on whether this film will dive into the gruesome acts that got the Vlad his infamous moniker.  A main character that brutally kills dozens of people (at a time, I believe) would be pretty unusual for a Hollywood flick.

Update: Check out what Charley Hunnam had to say about the project:

As the script stands now, we don’t touch on vampirism. That was my one non-negotiable area when we were developing it, and thankfully, nobody suggested that we should delve into it at the end. But you can clearly see the things that Bram Stoker took…. Vlad was such a brutal man, and the trick is to make him sympathetic. That was the challenge, and if we’ve succeeded in any way in this script, I truly believe that it’s genuinely making him sympathetic…There are a million ways to show that this guy is the origin of vampirism without actually having him drinking blood.

Hunnam answers many more of the questions you may have about the Vlad script, but you’ll have to jump over to Entertainment Weekly to read them.

Does anybody out there in cyberspace have any interest in a such a murderous and sadistic central character?  American Psycho and Silence of the Lambs certainly did wonders for Christian Bale and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

No release date yet for Vlad.

  1. To be honest, I’m not sure I like where this is heading?

  2. If it is like ANYTHING from the first 15 minutes of Coppola’s Dracula then it will be something…then again…Meh

  3. yes please, vlad is awesome. please include gore. anybody who doesn’t think this will be awesome if done correctly is a little crybaby.

  4. Another vampire movie? Shocking!

  5. From the same people who gave us Twilight?! This doesn’t sound good.

  6. @M-Cat
It may not be a vampire movie but a blood-and-guts swordplay movie. It may end with Vlad making a deal with satan but only the end will show him becoming a vampire.

And, of course, sparkling in the sunlight. :-)

  7. this doesn’t have to have any vampire stuff at all.
they could just make a straight ahead telling of Vlad the Impaler’s story and it would still scare the crap out of a lot of people.
    Vlad was a genuine badass!!!!

I think this is a great idea for a movie ( no fangs required ).

  8. I want them to portray sadistic people from the Middle Ages who torture people as sparkly. :-P

  9. I think lots of people love movies about murdering psychopaths. Hannibal Lecter is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. However, having them as the “hero” character is a little odd. Maybe that’s the point the article was trying to make.

  10. Not really, How Anti-Heroic Characters, it doesn’t matter if the “HERO” is Likable, just if the Story is Something NEW & Refreshing, Puh-Lease…

This has got Potential, haters who hate before a Single Shot has been Seen, is a DUMBASS Pretentious A-HOLE…

Do yourself a favor, and wait for the movie to come out to JUDGE IT, bwah…As far as Biopix go, I personaLLY Enjoy’d MonGOL…And that was a Broad, Sweeping kinda Epic, with Holes in Spots, lack of DetaiL, or Specific Denseness to the Proceedings, but that doesn’t mean it suxx, just that it was a Tall-TeLL Version, which I LIKE, heh…

SO this has the PotentiaL to be good, ONLY Cuz we GIVE a Damn about the Character…If the Director & Producers can do that, then we’ve got something here…

Just like Sherlock Holmes, this has to be Iconic but on its own terms, not just the Name of a Famous Person//Literary Character, but that’s just the initiaL FaMiLiaRity, to draw in Curious Viewers, but once we’re in, I’m hoping Something akin to SHerLOCK HoLMES or The UpCoMiNG “WOLFman”…Sheesh, that movie looks wick’d too, and not “OMG, I’ll wet my pants” but StiLL Some PRetty PowerFULSTUFFTHERE, u know?

ha…I love Period EpiX, bwah…Seriously, Sweet SPOTS!

  11. @ “Kahless”

If that’s the case then maybe it could be decent. But it’s from the makers or producers of Twilight and Brad Pitt isn’t even the lead. He “may” be in the movie in a small role. They will bring someone else in for the lead role.

  12. Sounds good, maybe people will stop thinking vampires are super cute and romantic if they make a movie about the less then nice guy that their based off of. I also think Charlie Hunnam would be perfect to play Vlad to.

  13. Hopefully it will be Action Adventure like Braveheart!

I’ve seen enough historical Vlad Documentaries on TV. I want to see the Blood & Gore version on the Bigscreen.

  14. Daniel Day Lewis Would be the perfect Vlad!

  15. Actually, if done right, this will be an excellent film with a fascinating story. The “anti-hero” Dracula is considered, to this day, a hero to many people in Romania…not because he was some sweet, loving, compassionate leader, but because he tried to maintain an atmosphere of unrelenting, absolute justice and (his own version of) even-handedness. Noble families learned they were NOT above the law, and many higher-level crimes dwindled to almost-non-existence under his rule. Abraham Stoker probably took inspiration from Dracula’s stubbornness and strength of will AS WELL AS his unnerving proclivity toward public impalements. He was, at that time, the first line of defense against Muslim incursions into eastern Europe…and yes, I do mean HE, as in the fact that he organized and led the Wallachian and nearby eastern forces with an iron fist. His title, Dracula, in fact, means two things in Romanian (your interpretation back then most likely would have depended on which end of the impaling spear was facing you): Dragon (as in Order of the Dragon–a group dedicated to militarily defending the edges of Christian territories) and Devil.
Dracula inherited this title from his father, Vlad Dracul, who also battled the Turks. Dracula’s reign was as fascinating as it was utterly horrifying (in case you think I’m gushing over the man), but his death was just as stunning–He was finally beheaded; mysteriously, his corpse was moved (disappeared?) from the Snagov Monastery island where it had “rested”…
A well-done film on this this REAL monster would be fantastic!

  16. @Andrew
I think the legend started when people claimed to have seen Vlad after his body disappeared. They probably just saw someone who looked like him or just wanted their 15 minutes of fame…or they were smoking some really good stuff. :-)

  17. f*** yeah!! I can’t wait to see it because it is a part of Romanian history, and it makes me proud because I am Romanian as well!

Trust ne, wait for it and watch it when ut is going to be released because you will then find out about the real Vlad, not all that b******* that all of Earth know my country after!

  18. Daniel Day Lewis as Vlad Tepes will garner him another Oscar. PERFECT. I can’t see anyone else doing it.
