DC Comics heroes have been enjoying a successful run on The CW with Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and the newly-migrated-from-CBS show, Supergirl. Fans of the quartet of series learned last year that there was also another vigilante hero out there in the Arrowverse, a totem-channeling crime-fighter named Vixen.
She appeared in live-action form for the first time in season 4 of Arrow, but she already had her own animated series on CW Seed. The streaming show, which originally aired in short segments that can now be watched in a single half-hour story, explored Vixen's origins and transformation into a Detroit superhero. Originally an aspiring fashion designer with some anger and identity issues, Mari McCabe (Megalyn Echikunwoke) learns to accept her destiny as protector and use her family's African totem necklace to channel the power of the animal kingdom.
Arrow and The Flash appeared in season 1 of Vixen, and were voiced by their live-action actors Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin, respectively. It looks like the Arrowverse team-ups will continue, as you can see in the Vixen season 2 trailer above that premiered at San Diego Comic-Con. The video begins with The Flash (Gustin) and Firestorm (Franz Drameh/Victor Garber) taking on the villain "Weather Wizard," who was of course named by Cisco (Carlos Valdes).
Vixen arrives to help save the day, but after using a dolphin's power to zip underwater, she's dealt a crushing lightning blast from the Wizard. Fans will have to wait for the season 2 premiere to find out what happens next. The new series of short episodes will also feature appearances from Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and Black Canary (Katie Cassidy) -- the latter indicating that the new season's timeline occurs before Laurel's death on Arrow.
With a relatively short running time to work with, here's hoping that the crowd of superhero guest stars won't detract from Vixen as the main character. Sadly, Echikunwoke's busy schedule prevents her from embodying the live-action version of Vixen on the upcoming season of Legends of Tomorrow, but we can always hope for another appearance on Arrow. In the meantime, fans can enjoy her voice work for CW Seed, and hopefully some interesting evolution for the new hero.
Vixen season 2 premieres on CW Seed this fall. The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
