Vin Diesel is fast becoming a master of viral marketing. In recent months, the Fast and Furious star has been taking to his Facebook and Twitter accounts to keep fans up to date on his upcoming projects, including this fall’s Riddick sequel. More recently, he’s been hinting that he would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (possibly in the newly-retitled The Avengers: Age of Ultron).

Speculation rages on about that expected Marvel announcement (which many expected to be revealed this past weekend at Comic-Con), but Diesel is again using social media to drum up talk regarding the status of another one of his franchises.

On his Facebook page, Diesel posted a photo that seems to indicate that his long-rumored return to the xXx franchise may be imminent. See the image below.

The image itself isn’t particularly revealing, since it’s essentially a repurposed shot from the xXx film Diesel starred in back in 2002 (see below). However, the announcement that Diesel’s character of Xander Cage has been found alive implies that a new film may be closer than fans think.

Rob Cohen – who directed the original xXx film – previously shared his plans to bring Diesel back to the franchise in the third installment, which he hoped to release in 3D. When Diesel and Cohen didn’t return for xXx: State of the Union, Sony took the series in another direction and cast Ice Cube in the lead. Diesel’s character was subsequently killed off in a short film that accompanied the xXx director’s cut DVD, seemingly closing the book on the possibility of his return.

The photo that Diesel posted could be an indication that a deal was finally struck to officially send xXx: The Return of Xander Cage (as it’s rumored to be titled) on its way to production. If so, this would mark the second active franchise that Diesel has returned to (after abandoning and then famously returning to the Fast and Furious series) and the third one that he’d be leading (including the revived Riddick franchise).

Are you looking forward to the increasingly strong possibility that Diesel may be back as Xander Cage in a third xXx film, Screen Ranters, or do you think the series’ time has passed? Sound off in the comments section below.
