Vin Diesel is fast becoming a master of viral marketing. In recent months, the Fast and Furious star has been taking to his Facebook and Twitter accounts to keep fans up to date on his upcoming projects, including this fall’s Riddick sequel. More recently, he’s been hinting that he would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (possibly in the newly-retitled The Avengers: Age of Ultron).

Speculation rages on about that expected Marvel announcement (which many expected to be revealed this past weekend at Comic-Con), but Diesel is again using social media to drum up talk regarding the status of another one of his franchises.

On his Facebook page, Diesel posted a photo that seems to indicate that his long-rumored return to the xXx franchise may be imminent. See the image below.

The image itself isn’t particularly revealing, since it’s essentially a repurposed shot from the xXx film Diesel starred in back in 2002 (see below). However, the announcement that Diesel’s character of Xander Cage has been found alive implies that a new film may be closer than fans think.

Rob Cohen – who directed the original xXx film – previously shared his plans to bring Diesel back to the franchise in the third installment, which he hoped to release in 3D. When Diesel and Cohen didn’t return for xXx: State of the Union, Sony took the series in another direction and cast Ice Cube in the lead. Diesel’s character was subsequently killed off in a short film that accompanied the xXx director’s cut DVD, seemingly closing the book on the possibility of his return.

The photo that Diesel posted could be an indication that a deal was finally struck to officially send xXx: The Return of Xander Cage (as it’s rumored to be titled) on its way to production. If so, this would mark the second active franchise that Diesel has returned to (after abandoning and then famously returning to the Fast and Furious series) and the third one that he’d be leading (including the revived Riddick franchise).

Are you looking forward to the increasingly strong possibility that Diesel may be back as Xander Cage in a third xXx film, Screen Ranters, or do you think the series’ time has passed? Sound off in the comments section below.

  1. xXx is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, a fine piece of cinema and a great work of art…………….

    Bring on the threequal……….

And then kill me with a skate board to the head, please do not make anymore of this crap!!

    • hahah i picked up a hint of sarcasm starting with the 6th word in your post.

      couldn’t agree more.

  2. The first xXx was quite fun to watch. Realistic? No, but then neither are most action films out there (the Bond films are an obvious choice). The second was a disappointment, but a third with Diesel back in the role could do well. I haven’t been disappointed yet by a Vin Diesel film actually, because I know what kind of film to expect and don’t have delusions of them being Oscar contenders.

He actually cares about the film making process as well, and seems to get involved in and take ownership of some roles (e.g. the Riddick franchise).

  3. its amazing to me how many people turn into critics when it comes to fun action movies. was it the best movie ever?? no…was it a fun popcorn ridiculous action movie…your goddam right it was. if its not your bag then fine no ones going to judge you…just don’t watch them!! Pacific Rim….perfect example!!! Crazy ridiculous premise….but OH MY GOD was it an awesome spectacle to watch in imax 3d. its the movies people…chill the hell out and have fun for gods sake, otherwise sit home, watch something like schindlers list or on golden pond and shut your mouth!!

    • Agreed.

Not to say that these kind of movies can’t be criticized for what they are though. Some movies really disappoint, even given the different standards (e.g. I though GI Joe was really fun but GI Joe 2 was pretty bad), but they should be judged on that level and compared to similar types of films, not compared to what “quality cinema” should be, whatever that means.

  4. Vin does NOT have a Twitter account…check before you post

  5. I’m kind of excited for this. People need to understand that movies like the xXx franchise, Fast and Furious, Pacific Rim, Taken… they’re all popcorn flicks, not high-art cinema. They should be treated as such. I love a meaningful, deep movie as much as the next guy. But, being a guy, sometimes we just want to be entertained and not to think at all. That’s the point of all these movies, the directors know that, the actors realize that, but sometimes people expect every film to be award-winning with a well-thought-out plot and meaningful characters. That is not the point of entertainment, the point is to entertain. Also, I am saying “people” as in the people that complain every time news about a movie like this comes out.

  6. i loved every minture of the xx movies and i hope there are more sequels in the coming years

  7. Notice every time a movie is bad the excuse is always “it was never meant to be anything more than a popcorn flick.”Yeah yeah, sure.

    • Um, no. See my comment above. They just need to be judged on their own standards.

  8. @ chase…..yes im sure pacific rim and movies like XXX were actually made in the directors eyes to change the world.

yes they are in fact made specifically to entertain, not be picked apart by wanna be film critics like yourself and other like you.

  9. Yes great news I can’t wait for another Xxx movie…. Vin Diesel makes good movies

  10. Yes he needs to return Ice Cube did an okay job but without Vin Diesel it wasn’t that good

  11. I’m watching XXX as we speak. It was a fun popcorn movie. I’m totally down for a 3rd one. Wonder if they will keep to the original idea for the sequel: Xander with a sidekick…

  12. I would enjoy another XXX movie. Was very disappointed with the second one. Vin has charisma and I really enjoy his movies. Will really miss him and Paul Parker working together.
