What Other Marvel Character Could Vin Diesel Play in 2016-17?

Blackbolt Inhumans Marvel Comics What Other Marvel Character Could Vin Diesel Play in 2016 17?

While promoting the release of Riddick, star Vin Diesel couldn’t avoid talking about another major film franchise he’s about to enlist in. For two months, Diesel’s been teasing and then unofficially confirming that he’s joining Marvel’s (currently shooting) Guardians of the Galaxy but that wasn’t the original plan, nor is it the only one going forward.

Diesel went on record over a week ago, confirming that he’s going to not only voice, but also will perform the motion capture for the one remaining uncast member of the Guardians roster, the alien tree named Groot. He also explained that Marvel’s original intention was to cast him in a different role down the road.

“What we were initially talking about was a fresh IP  and that was the focus of our conversation, which was a fresh IP that would come out in 2016 or 2017, and potentially launch the third phase. And when we went to Comic-Con we realized that people wanted something a little more immediate…”

In an in-depth interview this week (watch it here), the star told the entire story about how the Groot offer came about and what it took for Marvel to convince him to take it. Diesel also explained that he and Marvel are still going to focus on that 2016-17 movie, a film that he teases will lead to a “merging of brands.” Yes, Diesel may end up playing two different characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I had heard over the last year people on the social media page saying ‘what’s up Vin? Why aren’t you going to Marvel? Why aren’t you doing anything with Marvel? It would be a crime of cinematic history for you not to be.’ So I’m thinking this Marvel thing is becoming really, really important to these people. Okay, what can I do? What should I think?

I get the call, I go down to meet with Marvel – a great meeting. I mean it was just… it was even talking about something so big I can’t even talk about because it’s like a merging of brands in a way which I won’t get into, but that was way, way, way, way down the road.”

Any analysis of Diesel’s words comes down to what he means by “brands.” We can say for sure that two franchises, whether from the same studio or not, are coming together and a big stepping stone towards that path potentially begins in 2016 - after Ant-Man and The Avengers: Age of Ultron - with a new IP. That last part is key.

Before jumping to speculation that he’s teasing a potential agreement between Disney’s Marvel Studios and either Twentieth Century Fox (Fantastic Four, X-Men) or Sony Pictures (The Amazing Spider-Man) for some mindblowing crossover, that’s almost certainly not a possibility. Any hopes of a Fox-Marvel team-up were dashed recently with both Joss Whedon and Bryan Singer writing their own versions of the Quicksilver character into their respective next projects, The Avengers 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

That leaves us with two possibilities of a “new IP” that will “merge brands,” one far more realistic than the other:

  1. The Unrealistic – Marvel Studios has a deal with Universal Pictures (who produced and distributed The Incredible Hulk) to co-produce (or co-distribute with Disney) an adaptation of Namor – a character that was recently revealed to still be owned by Universal. That news came from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige a week ago where he also said, “next spring is when we really sit down and start to decide what we announce for 2016 and 2017.
  2. The Realistic – One of two unannounced Marvel films with 2016 release dates (or the third unannounced film with a May 2017 date) is a story that can serve as a bridge between the Earthly portion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (i.e. The Avengers) and the cosmic side (Guardians of the Galaxy) and that “new IP” (Vin Diesel’s words) would be none other than The Inhumans, a project Feige said he’s “confident” in.

Fans can move on past speculation that Marvel may be greenlighting a feature based on recently re-acquired licenses of Blade, Punisher, Ghost Rider, Daredevil, etc. or adapting a Heroes for Hire or a more adult property like Moonknight as a Vin Diesel vehicle. Those characters are simply not part of the plan in the immediate future, nor are they pertaining to a new IP that wold “merge” brands. They aren’t big enough, or as Kevin Feige would say, not “different” enough.

As for Thanos, the character will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy and Diesel would have referenced such a possibility of voicing/playing two characters in the project – unless Marvel is saving the full reveal of the character until later. Diesel is unlikely in talks for a role in Doctor Strange either since that does meet his description of “merging” anything outside of bringing in magic to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With Marvel Studios planning two films for 2016 and another two in 2017 (only has a release date so far), leading to what we can expect to be The Avengers 3 in May 2018, it’s a safe bet that two of the four will be three-quels to Captain America and Thor with the remaining two slots left open for one or two new IPs. At this point, based on namedrops alone from Marvel execs, Doctor Strange and The Inhumans are the most likely candidates, the latter of which can even serve as a quasi-sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy due to its cosmic origins.

The Inhumans are a group of superpowered individuals, born from genetic manipulation on early humans by one of Marvel’s biggest alien races. They’re led by Blackbolt (images above), a character we think is a possibility for Vin Diesel, and they have ties to characters who will be introduced in Guardians. It’s a new IP, one that can be “different” for Marvel and one that can launch a new franchise for Marvel and help bring the Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers together by the end of Phase Three where all of Marvel’s heroes can come together to battle Thanos.

As an added bonus, the origins of The Inhumans and their special abilities could be used by Joss Whedon to explain how and why Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have powers in The Avengers: Age of Ultron since they reportedly are unable to reference “mutants” due to Fox owning all things mutant and X-Men related when it comes to film.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Diesel as Blackbolt, Thanos or someone else?

Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn off of his script co-written by Nicole Perlman. Cooper joins a cast led by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly and Glenn Close.

Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016, July 8 2016 and May 5 2017.

  1. it’s funny how people still think he’s going to play namor after like 5+ years of speculation :P he doesn’t suite the role b/c he doesn’t just look almost completely different to namor, but he doesn’t have the same attitude/presence that namor has in the comics.

he would be an awesome as a villain :)

  2. For Fing Fang Foom he could have been a Tech Dragon robot, or even a creature from Thors world.

  3. Now this is really going beyond my level of knowledge, Inhumans and all. But I’m game. Age of Diesel?

  4. As much as id love to see Sony’s spiderman merged into this universe, i think the inhumans makes the most sense, if he plays blackbolt people wont even notice two characters are played by the same actor :)

    • Perhaps he might be Karnak (or less likely) Gorgon. I don’t think he would be Triton, and certainly not Crystal or Medusa. Lockjaw??—ummm, no.

      • You leave anyone out?? It almost seems like you were trying to name all of the Inhumans to show off your incredibly vast knowledge of the comic book source material.

  5. If he’s voicing Groot, he’d be a good Black Bolt since Black Bolt can’t talk. That way, he’d lend his voice to one character, and his acting and likeness to another, without it being obvious.

    • Exactly what I was thinking :)

    • So glad you said he couldnt talk….i was looking to see if anyone would!

    • Hmmmm, a feasible point…!

    • And then his thoughts and limited telepathy will be voiced by…?

    • My thought exactly.. That would be great.

  6. thinking Fox is being a mule about sharing rights. They’d make so much more if they shared

  7. I could see him as Moon Knight…

I could also see him as Black Bolt.

    • I’d love to see Vin Diesel portray Black Bolt…perhaps then, he could shut the #¥€< up already! This dude gossips more than a teenage girl.

  8. dont you guys think that Guardians of the galaxy more than likely will get a sequel too?

that would lead to only one new proyect before Avengers 3

    • I see GotG being more about spin offs from characters, worlds and concepts introduced in the first film, with certain GotG members turning up in any cosmic film or One-Shot…

    • Let’s see if #1 GOTG goes splat first….

  9. after the introduction of Ultron, Antman and Scarletwitch to me Vision makes still most sense

  10. His doing Groot’s voice doesn’t preclude other speaking parts. Chances are the voice will be modified. So if he plays Black Bolt, that won’t be the reason. I’m guessing it will be Thanos.

    • I’d like to see him as Thanos but he said it’s a property they’re developing for for phase 3 and we’re supposedly getting more Thanos in Phase 2. I’m still thinking it’ll be a character we haven’t seen on film yet.

      • I could see him as Vision, although I hate the idea of an aging actor playing an android in multiple films. I could also see Inhumans developed because of the Kree connection.

  11. I wish Marvel and Fox would just come to an agreement and merge the franchises already. Spidey and Wolverine have always been of and on Avenegers, and that would be awesome to watch onscreen.

    • Actually, neither one was originally an Avenger. I go back to Issue #1 of these comic characters, and they have only been more recent additions, where pretty much anyone who could squeeze into a set of spandex and lycra leotards could say, “Hey, I’m an Avenger or X-man, too!”. That come-one, come-all thing pretty much screwed up superhero groups, whether you are talking X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four, or Justice League. That plus bad art, bad story-lines, bad everything. No, classic comics pretty well took a dive in written form after the 70s, and finished fizzling out in the 80s, those that were left. Go back and view the early comics of the 60s and 70s, and you will find little good in the comparisions after those dates, at least in my opinion.

  12. Black Bolt could work. Thanos i think is still a great fit although it doesnt look like that will happen. I still want an Adam Warlock movie. He is such a great character.

    • CAN OPEN

  14. I think Vin should be cast as the absorbing man,he has the look and build, would be believable going toe to toe with hulk or thor and would be nice to see him a villain instead of another anti hero.I think the biggest problem would be his origin story, would you make it science ala the hulk or magic like his origin in the comic.

  15. Come on guys, let’s be logical. Many thought he’d be Thanos in GotG, but he was really Groot. What was our main hint? The picture on his facebook page. What other Marvel hero has acted as his main picture? Hmmmm, a certain red cyborg? Forget his “merging brands” thing, who knows what the hell it means out of context, unless this has been some elaborate plan on his part to distract us from his “real” Marvel role, he’s Vision. The real question is what movie is he debuting in? Avengers 3 would be the obvious call, but so soon after Age of Ultron…. Either Vision is going to have an unexpected arrival in some other hero’s film or A3 is not the grand final of Phase 3. Personally, I’m happy with either option.

  16. I thought giving Vin ‘Groot’ was a waste of talent. Having Vin be another non-speaking character would be no better. I’d like to see him star — Giant-Man would be cool!

    • I want Giant-Man, but Vin is not even close to the character of Hank Pym/Goliath/Giant-Man/Ant-Man. He definitely would make a better tree!

  17. I like Vin Diesel, and I think it’s pretty exciting to think of the possibilities that are to come. I kind of wish that he was going to be the one playing Ultron, but oh well there are a ton of other characters out there. I also think it would be kind of cool if the merging of the brands comment was a hint that Riddick would join the marvel universe. I honestly think that would be pretty awesome, but I highly doubt that would go down. but who knows, we’ll just have to wait and see what’s going to happen.

  18. Vin Diesel would make a GREAT Blackbolt!

  19. I could not see Vin Diesel shouting “Imperius Rex” and being taken seriously.

However, Phase Three of Mavel Cinematic U has GOT to be the Infinity War. It HAS to be. If they don’t use this momentum they’ve gained to bring the Infinity Gauntlet to the screen and do it justice, then what the hell has been the point?

  20. I think I have the answer. He will (obviously) play Groot in GOTG, which makes him part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and part of the on-going “phases”. I think his other role will be as Blade (likely to be set apart from the current MCU). Sounds logical to me. I think Vin would make a great Blade.

  21. As several posters have asked earlier, why would you cast someone with such a great voice in a mute role?

Still, if the *were* talking about Black Bolt, then despite all the nay-sayers, the IP that makes the most sense of the “merging of brands” comment seems to me to be the FF, since they have the closest ties to the Inhumans.

On the other hand, I agree with crusher creel that Vin is an excellent fit for his namesake, but that seems like it would be a poor use of a (supposed) box office draw to play a (relatively) minor villain.

    • If The Inhumans became a feature film, and I think it will, Blackbolt won’t be mute for the entire film. Guaranteed.

    • Thanks John and I guess you’re right he (absorbing man) has become a bit of a jobber over the last few decades but with someone like Vin portraying him and all the potential his powers have, sure would make great visuals and move him back into A list villain status like his early jack Kirby appearances.

  22. No one can stop Thanos!

  23. I could see him backing out after Garbage of the Galaxy flops

  24. Maybe he is galactus?

  25. I think it will be DEATHLOK. it is MARVEL/ROBOCOP.. (Deathlok was one of the inspirations for the origianl ROBOCOP. VD looks the part, and could pull off the roll of Luther Manning

  26. Inhumans is the IP he was talking about for sure. Merging of brands meant Inhumans as a kind of sequel to Guardians so they will both be featured in it.

  27. All I can say is Silver Surfer. He has the look and what other character ties in with the infinity war, guardians of the galaxy and thor/avengers as much as the surfer does, not to mention the surfer opens the door to so many other possible story lines, aka FF, defenders and possibly the only arc that could match the infinity war saga “onslaught”

  28. he will be The Toretto and he has the power to steal cars

  29. Why not the Defenders? That could even bring Howard the Duck into the fold – to fight thanos? Moon Knight?
