[Update: Vin Diesel met with Marvel. Details here.]

With only one chapter of Phase Two (Iron Man 3) out of the way, Disney and Marvel Studios have begun unveiling their plans for Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After The Avengers 2 and Ant-Man hit theaters in 2015, there will be at least three additional Marvel franchise movies, unannounced titles officially scheduled for 2016 and 2017, with more on the way.

San Diego Comic-Con is three weeks out and Marvel is expected to host a major panel presentation for Thor: The Dark World, that will also likely include bits for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. Adding to the list of hopeful unveilings – that now includes the mysterious Phase Three film titles – are the major casting confirmations and surprise announcements. Could one of them involve a role for Vin Diesel?

Vin Diesel just told his 47 million Facebook fans that he’s meeting with Marvel, joking that he doesn’t know why or what for. It came as a secondary part of one of his regular Facebook photos and messages:

“P.s. Marvel has requested a meeting… no idea what for… haha, you probably know better than me…”

With the timing of this statement, Comic-Con around the corner, Fast & Furious 6 (& 7) in everyone’s mind, and the fact that writer-director James Gunn is beginning to shoot Guardians of the Galaxy in London, our immediate guess would be that Marvel is looking to finalize the voice actors for their space epic. Heroes Rocket Raccoon and Groot for instance, along with the big bad villain of the universe (Thanos) will likely be (at least, partially) CG animated, along with many other of the alien characters.

How does Vin Diesel’s voice (think an angrier Iron Giant) behind the grinning face of Thanos sound?

By coincidence or perhaps not at all, we’re not surprised to see Diesel’s name pop up with the Marvel brand. Last year in August, he stirred the rumor mill himself with his super-popular Facebook page by throwing up an image of Vision (the photo below, actually) as his profile photo before quickly taking it down. Vision is an android, a love interest of confirmed new Avengers Scarlet witch and a member of Earth’s Mightiest himself.

Knowing from our sources that actors such as Benicio Del Toro were signed quite a while before the news was slipped to trade magazines, it’s possible that Diesel is playing coy and is already set to play some character in the series. All we have to go on is the timing of the news and the uncast characters we know are hitting the big screen in the future.

There’s an additional piece to the story that I mentioned last year and on the Screen Rant Underground podcast, but five years ago, Diesel told MTV in an interview why he hadn’t gotten involved in comic book movies. His main reason is that he was “holding out,” for a film where the protagonist is the villain from the Marvel universe, a role that no one had come to him yet at that point in time.

Iron Man 3 is currently in theaters, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016, July 8 2016 and May 5 2017.

  1. Uhm, no. I’m sorry but his bad-boy voice and ‘badass’ attitude does just not fit in with Marvel ._.

    • Why not?

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a fan of Vin and don’t like the F and F flicks, nor do I like the Riddick flicks, but obviously Marvel feels he’s got the talent to voice a character.

      • WHY just to voice a character? IM NOT A BIG FAN OF HIS EITHER, but I think his name may be one that Marvel would like for GOTG and HOPEFULLY NOT FOR THE VOICE OF RR, maybe Groot or even a real character in GOTG or a movie coming out a little later…. just to make sure his schedule is clear later on when they want him!! just a thought

  3. Voice of Groot.

A waste of his muscles, but his voice would be good for a CGI tree.

  4. Vision, Thanos, or the voice of Rocket Raccoon, hell, I could even see him as Namor or even Wonder Man.

    It really is anyones guess.

    • Not so much Namor.

    • Wonder Man !!! lol

How long has it been since Wonder Man was in any of the books? I don’t keep up with the books as much as I used to.

My favorite Wonder Man stories were from those ooooooooold Avengers comics my cousin gave me. I think those stories go way back to the early eighties.

Dude, I seriously doubt Marvel is going to dig up Wonder Man anytime soon.

      • I wouldnt entirely rule him out, far as I know he is still around(goes with the immortality), and he did show up in EMH. Just the challenge would be introducing him, however he is central to classic vision though

      • That would be hilarious!

      • You speak as if he hasn’t seen the light of day in 30 years. He has traditionally been a part of Vision’s origin and even had his origin altered a bit and included A:EMH.

I would have no problems is they decided to go the Wonder Man route because that would be the correct lead in for Ultron and Vision.

  5. Blackbolt maybe?

  6. He’d be a perfect villain.

  7. If he is playing Thanos, then who the hell is Benicio playing?

    • Ronan the Accuser

      • Or the Collector right?

  8. Deadpool.

    • that. makes. no sense. rethink ur idea

      • HAHAHA @ Deadpool!

    • wut.

  9. I thought that was a Game of Thrones picture at the top.

After reading the article, it really does sound like he will voice Thanos. I can totally imagine him voicing Thanos and I’m sure that’s a big enough role for him. So it seems he played it smart by, “holding out.”

  10. The man is going to play Deadpool.

    • WTF R U SERIOUS? ????

    • dumb.

  11. Diesel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
I can see it. As to which character, however, I cannot see.

He has a particular presence and can be quite entertaining, he has done serious and comedic work, and he is a self-admitted geek. With much thought, I think it makes sense for him to be in the MCU.

I do not see him as Thanos though.
I can see him in Guardians of the Galaxy given the casting.

    Is he Ant-Man? lol
If he is in Phase 3, maybe that villain in Doctor Strange Dormammu?

    • Pym is white with blonde hair. lol.

He don’t think he would be Dormammu. I don’t know how they’d do the character. Probably CGI. He doesn’t look very human if you get my drift.
Baron Mordo would be more likely. Diesel has said he wants to be a villain protagonist. Dormammu is not that,(he is outright evil). Mordo on the other hand was good, and wanted to be sorcerer supreme, but was ignored in favour of Doc Strange, which made him angry (angrier).

  12. Wait, I just had a crazy though, however its not quite a villian, though the fellow is quite a bit crazy, what if he played Moon Knight? I know the other alter egos other than Merc would be challenging, but it could be interesting

  13. Look at vin sitting on a throne lookin all Conanish

    • I’m sitting on a chair JUST LIKE THAT!

  14. I’ll have a top five:

1- Kingpin (but unlikely, unless “Daredevil” is a surprise at SDCC)

2- Deathlok (again, a character whose film would be a surprise at SDCC)

    3- Thanos/voice of (folks—you sold me)

    4- Groot/voice of.

5- Baron Mordo (Dr. Strange foe)

    • Oh God…. if a new Daredevil movie was happening I would lip out.

any guy that is gonna lip out over a movie is WAYYYY OFF!!! I will pray Im not in the same theatre when that happens…. LMAO!!

        • A “lip out” is what happens when your panties shift a little.

          • LMAO!

          • OMG LOL, Funniest thing i’ve read in awhile!!!!!!!!!

  15. Oh my god i think Diesel would be awesome to voice Thanos (angrier iron giant for villain=me entertained) not sure how i feel about the possibility of him playing vision i love the vision so so much he was one of my favorites but that role always required a lot of emotional style acting to me if it were ever to be cast and I am just not sure if Diesel has all that but between Thanos and the Vision it sounds like Diesel holding out for a villainous protagonist is more up the Vision’s alley than Thanos but i guess we’ll just see whats happens maybe he’s playing the villain for Avengers 2 who know look forward to all things Marvel.

  16. As has been mentioned, Crusher Creel it a perfect fit.

  17. Luke cage or a wakandan warrior (maybe t chaka)

    • No and no.

  18. He could just be a random SHIELD agent or alien that plays a smaller role.

  19. Marvel could just want him to help produce a film, or he could just be a random SHIELD agent or an alien that plays a smaller role.

    • I highly doubt that VD, Who is usually in a leading role in movies, will be a supporting character in a Marvel movie. I think that he’ll be one of the main heroes or villains.

  20. I could see him being Vision, Namor, Ronan the Accuser, and voicing Rocket Raccoon, and even Groot.

  21. Groot, essentially like the Iron Giant voice over he did except this giant is wood .

  22. Vision seems to fit.

  23. It isn’t likely that he put up the Vision image without reason. He’s a geek. He knew exactly what he was doing.

I think he’d be better as Thanos, and that’s partly because he plays a lot of roles where he’s pissed off about a woman. So is Thanos, about Death. But, Vision works too.

  24. When I saw this I thought he would be a good drax

  25. I thought Morgan Freeman was doing the voiceover for Thanos.

  26. Maybe he is not playing a known character, maybe he is playing a shield agent or a military presence in one of the upcoming movies. I’m not a fan of his work but I am willing to give him a chance to prove me wrong.

  27. Did they buy back Silver Surfer? If they did, then I’ll bet he’s in for the role.

    • No, Fox didn’t sell SS to Marvel.

      • Then I’m stumped. Not sure who he’ll play. Maybe a hint to what movie he’ll be in would be a better lead.

    • the dude can’t fit on a surf board are you mad?

      • Dude, really? Yeah because there’s only ever been one size of surfboard in the history of the entire world right?

        • lol

  28. As Ultron

  29. Black Panther? Luke Cage? No! Am I the only one who believes both Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver will be Eternals in the Avengers sequel

    • There’s an idea, particularly since Thanos is actually an Eternal (when you get down to it). I think they’ll be Inhumans, since it seems like Feige wants to turn the Ihumans into X-Men stand-ins based on previous comments.

    • Nah makes perfect sense. Eternals are a perfect “replacement” for normal mutants (thats fox owns the rights to) for the MCU.
