Vin Diesel Trains For ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Motion Capture Work; Confirms Character Details

No official announcement from Marvel Studios or parent company Disney has made it official, yet it’s all but confirmed that Vin Diesel is in fact, playing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. Since before San Diego Comic-Con in July, the star of the Fast & Furious franchise has been teasing the idea voicing the fifth and largest member of the Guardians, revealing in the following months how the possibility came to be.

Initially Marvel had met with Diesel to talk about a lead part in a Marvel superhero film that wouldn’t come to theaters until 2016-17, a “new IP” as he describes it, but the response on his Facebook page – which currently has nearly 49 million fans – demanded something sooner. Guardians director James Gunn and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige came up with an idea for something that could fit Diesel’s currently busy schedule, while still planning to work together down the road on that other unannounced movie.

Up until recently however, seemingly no deal had been made and Diesel had not signed on for the role, despite his interest (and that of his kids) for him taking the part. What interests Diesel most about the character of Groot is how unique of a challenge it is for him as an actor, and it would be the first time where he could do work similar to Andy Serkis’ award-worthy motion capture performances in Lord of the Rings and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Last night, Diesel posted to his wall a video from the set of Fast & Furious 7 where on his downtime, he’s practicing walking around on stilts to make him 7-feet tall, preparing for what will be his motion capture work for Groot, likely to begin as soon as FF7 production wraps. Guardians of the Galaxy finished shooting last week so Gunn and crew need to get to work soon on motion capturing scenes where they need an actor to play Groot and as for the dialogue of the character, Diesel confirmed what we expected in that the character has only one line of dialogue (“I am Groot!”) that he uses in any and all conversations, just with different tones. This represents two unique challenges for Diesel bringing the animated character to life physically and through sound.

The video offers a great behind-the-scenes look into how Diesel has fun on set and is excited about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s also a special guest appearance from Fast & Furious 7/Guardians of the Galaxy co-star Djimon Hounsou. If anything, at least Diesel is helping give Marvel and Disney plenty of free marketing for Guardians. And look, he seems to have gotten the mobility part down. Groot will be sharing much of his screentime with the other animated member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket Raccoon, who will be voiced by Bradley Cooper.

  1. Can’t friggin wait. This movie will be interesting to say the least.

    • it certainly looks pretty unique. I’ll be seeing it fo sho.

    • especially with the awesome cast guardians has its gonna be a good one

  2. ya know for all the bashing Vin takes for bad acting or bad movies, the more I see of this guy off camera the more I like this guy. He never takes himself to serious and seems to love whatever hes doing. God if all us could be so lucky.

Cant wait for guardians because I know very little about it or them. it will be a nice change going in with no knowledge of them at all.

    • I totally agree with you. I saw footage of him on the Jonathan Ross show and he skyped with his daughter on his phone on air and showed her the talk show host and the audience and said he missed her and stuff. He’s a cool guy.

    • From what I can sense, there are others who are obviously better in acting than him, but one must admit, he has this warm and friendly persona that might be even better than other actors.

      • I agree-he seems to be a really genuine good guy-I’ve felt that way in every thing he’s acted whether good or bad :)

    • +1

  3. So that’s Diesel and Michael Rooker pretty much confirming it in the past week so where are Marvel Studios with the official press release?

    • Very soon I’d expect.

      • Probably waiting till after Thor 2 is done with it’s promotions as not to steal the lime light from it.

        • my thought exactly the same

  4. Im not getting excited until I know he is voicing Groot!! He still may be playing Thanos for all we really know…this could be 1 big deflection on who he is really voicing/Mocapping

    • Well considering Rooker talked about Guardians on Soccer AM last Saturday morning about Vin playing a tree (and accidentally spilled a spoiler about his character’s fate in The Walking Dead), I’d say Damon Poitier’s role as Thanos is still safe from the first Avengers movie.

  5. I know in the comic, Groot, only has one line “I am Groot”, but thats carrying over into the film? that kinda sucks for Vin to only have one line to say over & over.

  6. Is that a Sentinal head/face on the wall behind Groot & Rocket Racoon in the image above?

  7. one line in the movie? WTF

    • How many lines did Gizmo and Chewbacca speak in their movies again?

As crazy as it sounds, Groot may be the toughest role in this movie because he’s CGI (voice acting is already tough to emote through just your voice without being able to act on screen too) and he also only has 3 words of dialogue, having to be said in as many different ways as possible to convey various emotions.

Try it yourself. Say “I am Groot”, first like you’ve just witnessed something horrifying, then like the thing you witnessed has upset you.

Now do it like you’re recalling a favourite memory.

Tough, isn’t it? Now add the fact that the guy voicing the character is notoriously monotonous and mumbles his lines and you just got the most difficult character in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe to portray.

  8. hopefully they change the one line thing from the source material. saying i am groot didn’t work well for the character on the avengers animated series, it just doesn’t make sense.

    • It makes perfect sense. Do you want the idiot$ who criticised Iron Man 3 to nerd rage all over this movie too because Groot spoke more than three words?

What next, Chewbacca will gain the ability to speak?

      • Let me rephrase that (ie replace a word):

It makes perfect sense. Do you want the foolish people who criticised Iron Man 3 to nerd rage all over this movie too because Groot spoke more than three words?

What next, Chewbacca will gain the ability to speak?

  9. How do you train to be a tree?

  10. Belle & Sebastian playing in the background there, near the middle – good taste.
