Vin Diesel Confirms ‘Fast and the Furious 6 & 7′ On the Way

Back when Screen Rant chatted with Vin Diesel on the set of Fast Five, the brawny actor briefly discussed how that film was being fashioned to serve as the middle chapter in a trilogy – with Fast and Furious 6 bringing the tale of Dominic Toretto (Diesel), Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), and their fellow professional criminal/car racer types to a conclusion of sorts.

Rumors popped up in Fall 2011 that not only was Fast and Furious 7 also on the way, but that the sixth and seventh installments in the high-octane thrills franchise could shoot back-to-back and feature the addition of Jason Statham to a cast that already includes macho leading men like Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

The Statham rumors are (officially) just hot air right now; similarly, there’s been no confirmation about the possibility of the Fast Five sequels being filmed together. However, new comments from Diesel do reveal that Fast and Furious 7 is being actively developed – in fact, Chris Morgan (who penned the last three chapters in the franchise) has begun scripting both the sixth and seventh movies, according to the actor.

Here is what Diesel told THR, with regards to how the planned (second) Fast and Furious trilogy evolved into a quadrilogy:

“With the success of ['Fast Five'], and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn’t have enough space… We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages. The studio said, ‘You can’t fit all that story in one damn movie!’”

Universal is (certainly) also anxious to keep this particular cash cow alive and well, especially if Fast and Furious 6 proves to be a box office smash – which it almost unquestionably will be. Thus, having a seventh installment written and ready to go before cameras quickly (assuming it isn’t simply shot simultaneously with Part 6) is something the studio would definitely approve of, regardless of any potential plot contrivances needed to make it happen.

That said: Diesel does have a point about Fast Five vastly expanding the “scope” and number of character-based subplots in the series, so a seventh chapter doesn’t (per se) require a huge stretch.

Fast Five left the door open for Johnson’s relentless federal agent Luke Hobbs to continue his pursuit of Dominic and Co. in Fast and Furious 6; by all accounts, the semi-antagonist will be brought back for the sixquel (?), which has long been expected to take place in Europe – a possibility also set up directly by Fast Five‘s mid-credits scene – and see the return of certain characters from previous installments in the series.

Universal chairman Adam Fogelson has likewise suggested that Fast and Furious 6 (and, by default, Part 7) will also continue the trend established in Fast Five – by moving the series closer to the classic heist/caper genre, while still incorporating the hyper-kinetic chase sequences that the franchise is so well-liked for.

Fast and Furious 6 is slated to hit U.S. theaters on May 24th, 2013, so expect to hear more about both that film and Fast and Furious 7 over the upcoming months.

  1. haha! The world ends in 2012. Guess we won’t be seeing em!

Seriously, tho, Jason Statham’s agent is THE MAN. That dude gets his client into everything!

    • They should cmbine the world of FF and The Transporter. That would be an interesting way to bring in Statham

      • ooohhhhhh, You’re right, That would be an Awesome combination!!! Although I love the FF movies, Vin Diesal needs to get back on track with the Riddick movies!!

        • @angel

They are!! I saw they are currently filming it.

    • The world is not ending in 2012. Know one knows when the world will end but God.

    • surely bruce wills will go back up there to save the day, might even get Armaggedon 2.

  2. The world is not ending thats just bs and cant wait for this

    • Of course it’s BS; we just bring it up kidding around. And to be honest, the Mayan calendar ending doesn’t mean they thought the world would end, they believed a stage of man will end and another begin.

      • Apparently, the next stage begins with Vin Diesel and The Rock kickin’ it FF style.

Hope they film it in Europe cuz California is going down.

        • Vin Diesel said it would be in Russia

  3. Fast Five is one of my best movies of 2011.

The story was brillaint, the action was great and the fight scene between Diesel and The Rock is the best part.

I think it would be great if Fast and Furious 6 & 7 were shot back to back but I think the series should contuine where Tokyo Drifts left off.

Maybe have Sean teaming up with Dominic and Brain to take down the drug lord who is threating him where that’s where The Rock returns to hunt down Dominic and tell him that:

Letty is alive and The Rock plays to use her as a bait to get Dominic captured.

It is very sad that Han was killed but I think seriously Fast Six and Seven should contuine where Tokyo Drift has left off.

    • I agree with you completely in the 1st two paragraphs, but even though i think it would be great i think they would start to get confusing where the order of the movies go in. And if you bring letty back it kinda makes the other one look bad. if they bring letty back im sure they are gonna want to bring han back, han is an amazing character, id hate to see him go.

so i say if they try and do a follow up of tokyo (which i doubt they will), they should keep them both dead, but if they continue after fast five (which it seems like they will), letty will have to say dead.

      • Yea…. That is right…. They have to keep them dead cause the order would be messed up!!! But I do hope there is a 6 and 7

      • umm if you see the very last part of the movie the lady says “do you beleive in ghosts isnt that picture of letty

      • no because fast and furious 3 is based after all of them so at the end of the story with letty and all of that a new sort of story starts with dominic and saun (the new dk at the end of fast 3)

      • If she was gonna stay dead they wouldnt of did that last part after the credits in fast five they dont put stuff in thete unless there is a reason

    • ur gd right chicken i really do agree with u i hope they dont bring back in fast 6 and 7 i accepted that she already died in fast and the furious 4 the movie is gonna get confusing they should continue where tokyo drift ended

  4. The “Fast and Furious” movies are fun. What I don’t like is the Federal Governments version where they sold tens of thousands of guns to Mexican Drug gangs that have already been used to kill hundreds of innocent Mexicans and at least two US law enforcement officers. And on top of it, they lost money doing it!!!

  5. sweet

  6. Fast Five was very good and to be honest all the films (even the third) were not bad at all. very much looking forward to the 6th and 7th

    • Looking forward to 6,7 and 8!!!!!!11111111111111

  7. I like this news. I remember when Back to the Future 2&3 were shot simultaneously and the way it really created a continuity we hadn’t seen before. Personally, I am curious to see how the story will be developed with that surprise ending in mind, but with so many strong additions to Five, and Fogelson stating a desire to mature the series, I am confident that 6 will rock boots. Ditto for 7 if it’s shot consecutively.

  8. What a drag – a drag race, that is.

  9. You if you slapped a mask on Dwayne Johnson he’d look like Bane in that photo.

  10. I guess we won’t ever see the next chapter of Riddick or any other Vin D movie that doesn’t involve cars.

    • They are filming the next Riddick movie as I type this. They got the funding they needed last month.

  11. I’m a fan of the series and really liked the last one, but I gotta say that making a seventh is really milking it. Just another example of Hollywood riding something until they can’t make any more money out of it.

    • if you build it they will come…we all will be seeing it and they know it…theres no escaping it so enjoy it while they’re still making them..

  12. All of these films suck.

  13. i am very excited for the next installmentssince sathams joining the crew i bet you i bet it,ll be a crossover to the itaian job but ii think the transporter would be interesting to be crossed over[ of course in the ending i didnt make sense ]

  14. I do recall seeing that article about Riddick so I guess I should have clarified that i meant its been start and stopped quite a few times over the years. Hopefullly F&F doesn’t keep him so busy that it gets delayed again.

  15. looking forward for jason Statham for FF 6 & 7. that will be awesome….

  16. I think that they are getting Eva Mendes back. Why? If I’m not wrong in the mid-credits when someone brought a file to Dwayne, that Dom’s ex was alive or whatever, it was Mendes who brought it.

Correct me if I’m wrong. :)

    • yes its Eva Mendez on the last scene of FF5. Shes a Federal agent. they are bringing the old original cast back to scene since Tokya Drift is so f*** up. Tokyo Drift shud never been with Fast&Furious franchise. for me, Tokyo Drift shud be the very last episode of FF series.

      • I agree.. Tokyo Drift should not have been #3.

      • yh it would make more sense if it was the last in the series but its a rubbish ending in fast 3 for that to be the end. they should bring the drug dealer back from number 2 when he gets out of prison and he finds letty and stratham. dom, roman and brian then have to get her and him out then stratham joins the team for a final installment with saun in as well

    • not wrong..

  17. Even if it was the “last one” of the series, there us still an open endingto the movie?? So after 6 and 7 are done, I believe that they are going to jump back and make a movie that flows right off the ending of Tokyo drift. RD has a lot more money to be made. Each movie flows right into the next andall off them with a complete different story line! They are no where near being done.

  18. I would just have to say that I dont think they’ll be follwing the tokyo drift scenes.. But they are bringing Letty back.. They said that she had died in fast and furious 4, but they did not show that she was dead. She’s gonna kick the agents (dom’s girlfriend)ass.. Dom will get back with Letty in fast and furious 6.

  19. yes, i’m sure letty is coming back. you can see her picture in the little scene after the credits of fast five. i hope they make a good plot between letty and the cop-girl. I’m looking forward to these two movies with all those new (and old) actors; Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez and Eva Mendez…cant wait!

  20. I think they will make it where its Letty’s twin sister or something like that. Now Han almost has to be dead cuz u see him in the. car right before it blows up. The only characters left out as of fast five are the dude on the original crew in ff1 that drove the car with the right side steering, the bad guy from. ff2, bow wow and theI main guyin from ff3, braga from ff4. I think all the bad guys should get to gether

  21. All the bad guys should get together and go after the ff familiar. That would tie in Hobbs, mendez, and put the interpol cops in a justice pickle.

  22. I think they should shoot for 10 movies. That’s all my 3 year old wants to watch.

  23. That is bad ass don’t forget about Lucas black

    • yeap good point..

  24. does any 1 reember when at the end of ff3 when sean is gonna race vin diesel is the one he os racing i think that the next movie is going to be in japen and end it off in europe

    • I remember that. That would make a good starting point for FF6 to start

  25. Wow when I saw the fast and the furiours 5 I thought it was awsome I love it so much I have watched it 10 times already and I still love it.
I hope there is a fast and furiors 6 and I love all the people in it there is vin diesel paul walker and dwayne johnson I just caunt wait until I can meet them in person I hope .
Later all you fast and furious fans

  26. i honestly wish that everyone from the old crew in the first movie would come back.. that would be something. in my personal opinion, the first one was most original, aside from all the effects and stuff that they have in the new ones now.

  27. does anyone no when itll scope back to ff tokyo drift? that has been anoying me since i saw vin diesel at the end of it. he said that he one a car from han a few years back sooooo if they all split up at the end of fast five will seven or possibly eight go to tokyo? please all hints would be apreciated :)
