chronicles of riddick 3 Vin Diesel Confirmed for Riddick Sequel

Variety has confirmed that Vin Diesel will be back to both produce and star in another installment of the Chronicles of Riddick franchise. This confirms some of the rumors that were floating around this past summer, saying that Diesel would be back.

Universal will handle the domestic distribution of the film, which is being titled Riddick. Lionsgate is working on securing the international distribution rights.

As for the script: It was written by David Twohy, the man who co-wrote and directed both Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick and, more recently, A Perfect Getaway.

Diesel is continuing his industry comeback, with The Fast and the Furious 5 already on his docket. In fact, both Riddick and Fast 5 are crowding his schedule at the moment, so dates are being shifted and worked out so that there will be ample time for both.

Pitch Black was something of a cult hit that made an anti-hero icon out of Riddick. The Chronicles of Riddick was a massive letdown for fans, though it still raked in $116 million at the box office – enough to spawn a series of video games, which actually elevated Riddick’s status back to the level of “cool.”

This new film is said to be going with the “less is more” approach of Pitch Black, focusing on Riddick himself, which I’m fairly sure fans will be psyched to hear.

Diesel will produce Riddick along with Samantha Vincent through their One Race Films venture. A release date has yet to be set.

  1. I'm excited for Riddick to return, but I want to see Riddick with the army he inherited at the end of Chronicles. At least I hope they begin with that before stripping him down to the “less is more” idea.

  2. Me too. I really liked both films and am excited for a 3rd!!!

  3. Great news, Vin Diesel getting back to what made him a known actor Riddick movies, and fast series. sorry to say this but, the Pacifier” OMG what a wast of a action star on the raise, just like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Tooth Fairy come on get real) but i digress.
Vin can be this era's Sly or Arnold, with this move he might be back on track to do so.

    till next time

  4. give me a break, these movies do not warrant a sequel

  5. I thought that the “Chronicles of Riddick” was a great movie. “You Keep what you can kill..” the ending was awesome. Really looking forward to the return of Riddick

  6. That's great news I am a fan of both movies. I didn't think the second was bad movie it just wasn't the unique movie the first one was. I did like having more action in the second one. I found the development of the universe that Riddick comes from to be interesting but think that is what some people didn't like about it. I also hope they do something with the army thing at lest at the start…this wont be a prequel I hope!

  7. i agree. both Riddick movies were excellent. Nothing should be changed about either one. Keep Riddick movies coming. Anyone who doesnt think so has no eye for good cinema!

  8. To the people who likes both of these riddick movies you might be excited to know there are technically 3 :) check out Dark Fury it is a animated movie only 35 minutes in length that connects both movies in a way. I enjoyed it and it is in my DVD collection.

  9. Pitch Black was AWESOME , C.O.R. was good ( but not great ) .
I very much want to see a 3rd movie ; I just hope the tone is closer to the first film than the second.

  10. I third that opinion. The visuals in the Chronicles of Riddick were awesome and gave a great feel to the film. I thought it was a good switch up from the first film. I would rather the 3rd film incorporate the best parts of both it's predecessors. Looking forward to seeing Riddick on the big screen again!

    Bane

  11. The movies haven't really strayed much from the formula used in the first story. In each one the hero is chased by authority must confront a force of nature use unique abilities to overcome adversity is transformed in some way and defeats the real evil one at the end. Just a standard mono-mythic story. The universe is fleshed out a little in each succeeding story but really it hasn't changed the core, which most have been digesting for centuries. Really I can't see any downside continuing what they've started and what's wrong with a prequel? They said at the outset of this effort that they don't have the same backing as they did for the Underverse story. Personally I think they should wait until they can treat that story right rather than do it half way. They might get away with some kind of intermediary story of preparation but eventually storming the gates to the alternate verse is a more expensive story. The whole thing is a chronicle after all and you can take it anywhere as long as Riddick is living in it.

  12. Thanks for this comment, I had actually never heard of it. Gunning for it now though. Just watched the trailer, very much like Animatrix.

  13. your tippin buddy these need a sequel we dont know nearly as much as we should about riddicks universe like i wanna see what happens when riddick goes to the underverse then tears it all apart

  14. Riddick 3 should be good unless of course they decide they want to do it pg-13 which will ruin the movie.

  15. I'm interested in seeing another.

  16. I personally loved The Chronicles of Riddick. I thought it was a very good movie.

  17. I like this idea. :)

  18. I never said anything about the content of the riddick movies, i was commenting on his lack of “action” movies that he has or hasn't done

    till next time

  19. I'm really excited about this movie, I loved Pitch Black and COR was even better..

  20. The Rock has stated that the Tooth was gonna be his last family movie for a long while, he only made that movie so that his daughter could watch him in something, from now on he is gonna focus on decent action movies.

  21. thank you for this news i love it
now hear is a thought Vin diesel and the “rock” team up ???? don't yell at me it's just a thought……..plz be nice ……….lol

    till next time

  22. From everything I've heard, Dark Fury is really good. Unfortunately, I keep trying to watch it and can't… I know it's good, I just have a deep down primal and irrational hatred of Peter Chung's art style. I own it because it came with the set of Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick. Every once in a while I pop it in, get through about 5 minutes & take it back out.

One day I'd really like make it through, just for the story.

  23. I totally agree. I find it really disappointing when they create sequels to R rated films & then go for the pg 13 rating in a misguided attempt to get more people in the theater. All it does is water down the movie and disappoint everyone. I really hope that the fact that nearly every time it's been tried in the last decade the results have been poor deters film makers from doing it anymore.

  26. I really think that they should completely disregard the travesty that was Chronicles of Riddick. That wasn't Riddick… that was bad Riddick fanfiction filmed on a big budget.

Pitch Black, on the other hand, was awesome.
