Variety has confirmed that Vin Diesel will be back to both produce and star in another installment of the Chronicles of Riddick franchise. This confirms some of the rumors that were floating around this past summer, saying that Diesel would be back.
Universal will handle the domestic distribution of the film, which is being titled Riddick. Lionsgate is working on securing the international distribution rights.
As for the script: It was written by David Twohy, the man who co-wrote and directed both Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick and, more recently, A Perfect Getaway.
Diesel is continuing his industry comeback, with The Fast and the Furious 5 already on his docket. In fact, both Riddick and Fast 5 are crowding his schedule at the moment, so dates are being shifted and worked out so that there will be ample time for both.
Pitch Black was something of a cult hit that made an anti-hero icon out of Riddick. The Chronicles of Riddick was a massive letdown for fans, though it still raked in $116 million at the box office – enough to spawn a series of video games, which actually elevated Riddick’s status back to the level of “cool.”
This new film is said to be going with the “less is more” approach of Pitch Black, focusing on Riddick himself, which I’m fairly sure fans will be psyched to hear.
Diesel will produce Riddick along with Samantha Vincent through their One Race Films venture. A release date has yet to be set.
