A new piece of fan art teases how Tom Hardy might look wearing the infamous Symbiote in the upcoming Venom movie. For years, Marvel fans have longed to see a live-action version of Venom before his botched appearance in Spider-Man 3 soured those dreams. Still, Topher Grace’s unfortunate portrayal seemed to ignite the idea of a film led by the antihero, with the project flitting in and out of reality for over a decade. And while Spider-Man is finally in the MCU, fans were blindsided back in March when Sony announced plans for a Venom film in 2018.
From there, the news came out at an alarming rate, with word the movie will film later this year and be rated R. And amid confusion as to whether the new character would connect to the MCU, Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s director assured us it was a separate affair. From there, news on the project went quiet as fans and industry insiders were left to speculate what it could mean for the future of both Sony and Spider-Man. Yesterday’s news that Tom Hardy would be starring in Venom reignites the discussion, showing how serious Sony were taking it.
While we wait for more details to emerge, prolific fan artist BossLogic has already crafted his take on Tom Hardy wearing the Venom Symbiote. Check it out below.
The art follows his take on Armie Hammer as Shazam from earlier this week and is one in a long line of pieces by the artist. Though Hardy isn’t easy to make out, it does provide a cool look at a more classic version of the Symbiote on a traditionally bulky frame. There’s still no word, however, on whether Hardy will be playing Eddie Brock, the original Venom host following Spider-Man’s abandoning the alien creature.
The other leading candidate is Flash Thompson, but that seems unlikely. For one thing, it would require even more backstory than Brock will already need without the presence of Spidey. For another thing, Thompson is set to appear in Homecoming and Sony are unlikely to duplicate the character and complicate their relationship with Marvel more.
When it comes to both his acting skills and physicality, Hardy is the perfect person to play Brock. It also makes sense for Sony to start with the first and most popular host, unless they plan on completely reworking the mythology surrounding the character. At this point, anything is possible given how little we know about the project, so stay tuned for more Venom news.
