venom movie spider man 4 5 Venom Finds A Director?

Variety reporter Mike Fleming is reporting that Columbia Pictures is in talks with Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) to direct and rewrite the upcoming Venom solo film. Ross’ name is not new to Sony and their Spider-Man-related flicks however, as back in July he was brought in to make rewrites on the Spider-Man 4 script.

Ross is an easy choice for Columbia Pictures because of his growing relationship with Sony (Sony Pictures Entertainment owns Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group) which includes his directing of a Lance Armstrong cycling film and his work on the in-development Tokyo Suckerpunch. Combined with his longstanding relationship with Tobey Maguire that includes writing and directing him twice in the films listed above. They’ll be pairing as Actor-Director for a third go with The Crusaders.

I have no idea what to expect from a Venom solo film but I can’t believe that it can match anywhere near the success of any of the Spider-Man movies. The character simply doesn’t have that mass appeal and after what happened with Venom in Spider-Man 3, I don’t know where they go from here. Unless of course they cross-over with Spider-Man…

The report states that Ross will begin work on Venom after the fourth Spidey installment finishes and that the film will likely be a fresh start for the brooding character. The lead actor will most likely be recast. Sorry, Topher Grace, but you may be fighting Predators instead anyway.

My prediction is that after Spider-Man 4, Maguire, Raimi and the rest of the existing crew will leave the franchise, giving room for Sony’s planned 5th and 6th installments which are currently being written by James Vanderbilt to act as a franchise restart if needed. That would allow them to tie the new take on Venom with the new start of Spider-Man, allowing them to do it the right way this time.

What do you think about the Venom project and what would you like to see from it? Do you think it’ll tie-in at all with Spider-man 4 or the following two sequels?

Spider-Man 4 opens May 6, 2011.

  1. they should have topher reprise his role as eddie brock if he wants to. that’s just my opinion.

  2. I thought Tobey Maguire and Sam Rami signed up for 2 more Spiderman films 4 and 5 for a deal that Tobey Made of $50 Million Dollars which included being able to take time off for his kid etc…what happened there? What happened with that deal? and who else is worthy to place the future Spiderman? Who else would be a good actor to play Spiderman? Anyone have any ideas?

  3. Im sorry, how official is this Venom movie?

I really hop McWire and the rest of them dont leave, at all. Its not good. They could easily make 10 Spiderman movies, no problem.

  4. PLEASE DON`T ERASE THAT!!!!

  5. Firstly, Peter parker is charismatic and wise cracking and funny and has a real presence… Macguire looks the part but he is NONE of the above… he is one of the most boring actors ive ever had to watch.

Secondly, venom is a GREAT character with an awesome story in the comics… a solo flick could totally work, but not with the massacred version we saw in s3

  6. Well, this is sort of a surprise and sort of not a surprise for me. I thought if Sam Raimi left after Spidey 4, Gary Ross would be slowly pulled in to take over the reins. As mentioned, he’s worked with MacGuire before (*and Elizabeth Banks, for that matter) so I saw it as a possible effort to keep some cast together for Spidey 5, with Raimi exec producing. I don’t see the Spider-Man films being rebooted this early. At worst, it could be recast. (And if it is rebooted, why call it Spider-Man 5 & 6 anyway?)

As for Topher Grace not reprising, I think there is a way to work around a re-casting.
(Hey I got blown up…my face is different!) also, there have been other characters who have taken the mantle. IN FACT, since it now takes place “after Spider-Man 4″ I wonder if The Scorpion is going to be in part4….and he gets away, becoming the “new” Venom. That would solve a Topher Grace problem for sure, wouldn’t it?

I see more of a Venom Lethal Protector story going on, though, because otherwise, Spidey would have to cameo.

  7. I too would like a Venom Lethal Protector story with no spidey crossover, mention yes, allude to yes but no crossover

however the mac gargan venom would not work in lethal protector so we need eddy brock

  8. @ Darren,

Sony is sick of having to wait years and years between these movies that make 2/3rds of a billion + with each installment.

They hired Vanderbilt to write interconnected scripts for Spider-Man 5 & 6 that could act as a (quasi?)re-boot if Tobey and Sam aren’t up for a 5th.

I don’t know that exactly that means but I assume we won’t be getting a fleshed out origins story again, luckily. Maybe they’ll just re-cast and move on with different villains.

  9. I don’t see why the original cast should leave. Whit Tobby getting older it would be perfect to do spider-girl (is daughter) and have her dad be a mentor. Oh and the good old fight between him and the Goblin.

  10. This will fail. As did every character movie that had a spin off . Eletrka did fine in Daredevil…failed in her own film. Catwoman did fine in Batman…failed in her own film. To a degree Wolverine failed but at least it was financially successful.

    Venom will fail as well.

  11. That’s a weird combo: Gary Ross and Venom. I’m curious what Venom creator David Michelinie thinks about this.

  12. Those were both good movies but has he done anything with major sfx or action?

  13. @Rob

So you are basically saying the same thing I said?
If they (Sony) do not intend on (re) showing Peter Parker back in High School and/or the origin story, and just continuing on with a new cast and crew, then it isn’t a reboot. I’ll even give them a possibility of prequel action, since Spidey could face lesser foes before Green Goblin while still dealing with teen issues, or become (respected) friends with Flash Thompson. In the first film, several months had gone by between Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man and stopping crooks before facing against the Goblin and/or graduating High School: I would not rule this out entirely. It would seem lame to do that though, and I don’t think they’d go there.

But it would seem most would want the story to move on.
We are both hoping that that is the case…not to mention that with t

    @Paul Young

Worse- Catwoman wasn’t a spinoff of Batman: (not counting a one second snapshot of Michelle Pfiffer)

And the films that showcase a new character(s) to spinoff from shortchange the main characters (Fantastic Four 2, Blade Trinity), or underuse the new characters in hopes for a spinoff (like Wolverine did with Deadpool) …and those spinoff films never come to pass.

  14. Why are they still doing more than 4 Spiderman`s AFTER THE THIRD ONE??? NOW THIS FRANCHISE IS GOING TO BE A COMPLETE DISASTER, WHY COULDN`T THEY HAVE JUST LET IT END WITH VENOM, CARNAG, AND LIZRD IN THIS ONE I CAN`T BELIEVE THEY STILL DECIDED TO DO MORE THAN 4 SPIDERMAN MOVIES NOW SOMETHING TOO CRAZY IS GONNA HAPPEN THEY`RE GONNA USE ANY ORDINARY VILLAIN THAT DON`T REFLECT WHAT UNCLE BEN TOLD PETER IN THE BEGINNING “With Great power, comes great responsibility” WHY COULDN`T THIS HAVE BEEN A NORMAL SENSIBLE FRANCHISE THAT TEACHES A LESSON IF THEY USE ANY ORDINARY VILLAIN IN THIS ONE IT`S GOING TO RUIN THE MOVIE WHY DID THEY HAVE TO GO SO CRAZY WITH SPIDERMAN IN THIS SERIES USING VILLAINS TOO EARLY AND WHY ARE THEY STILL DOING A PART 5 THE MOST LOGICAL CHOICE WOULD`VE BEEN VENOM, CARNGE, AND LIZARD FOR THIS ONE AND END THE SERIES WHY ARE THEY STILL LEADING INTO A FIFTH FILM AFTER THE THIRD ONE NOW THIS SERIES IS GONNA GET COMPLETELY DAMAGED MORE AND MORE WHY????????????????????????

  15. WHAT??????????????????????????????// NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DON`T WANT A VENOM SPINOFF WTF THAT`S TERRIBLE PLEASE STOP DOING THE VENOM MOVIE RIGHT NOW I DON`T WANT HIM TO GET HIS OWN MOVIE AND YEAH WHY THE HELL ARE THERE GOING TO BE A PART 5 AND 6 AFTER THE THIRD I`M SICK OF HEARING ALL THE RUMORS ABOUT A PART 5 AND 6 JUST LET IT END WITH VENOM, CARNAG, AND LIZARD IN THIS ONE BEFORE TOBEY HAS TO LEAVE THAT`S NOT “TOO MANY VILLAINS” PEOPLE GET OVER IT AND I REPEAT NO MORE SPIDERMAN MOVIES AFTER THIS ONE NO MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF THOISE VILLAINS AREN`T GONNA BE IN THIS ONE I DON`T KNOW WHAT TO SAY.

  16. HEY LISTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I`M A REAL SPIDEY FAN, I`M 11 YEARS OLD, AND I REPEAT, DO NOT DO A VENOM SPINOFF AND THERE SHOULD ONLY BE A SM4 PLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. AND VENOM AND CARNGE CAN STILL KEEP A PG-13 RATING WITHOUT LOOKING TOOOOO EXTREME IN THE MOVIE I`M SURE AND IF THEY AREN`T TOO VIOLENT. 18. THAT COMMENT IS IN MODERATION? YOU BETTER NOT ERASE THAT COMMENT CUZ I DON`T WANT A SM5 PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. AND I DON`T WANT THE VENOM FILM EITHER SO EFFING STOP THE VENOM MOVIE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Stop using multiple ID’s and CAPS… it makes you look like an idiot. Make your point in clear concise statements, you’d be amazed at how many more people will listen.

Anyway, yes im all for a new direction for spiderman, not a reboot per se but new cast and director,

Venom could have worked if they set up eddy brock a bit better in s3 but now im not to sure…. perhaps it will be a separate franchise and show his relation with spidey in an opening montage

and I do really want to see hobgoblin in future films. The goblins are spideys biggest threat’s and I would like to see one done right…. rubber mask and all

  21. “Anyway, yes im all for a new direction for spiderman, not a reboot per se but new cast and director,”

The Spider-man series needs a new director. “Spider-man 3″ showed that Raimi is exhausted, and we need someone else in the director’s chair.

“Why are they still doing more than 4 Spiderman`s AFTER THE THIRD ONE???”

Its called MONEY. The film made a **** load of money so, OBVIOUSLY they are gonna make another.

  22. I don`t care if they`re trying to “follow the comic book” Spidey 3 was a piece of crap so honestly why do we need to have the more after this one? The envision of the comic book on the screen is like a format that doesn`t really match the movie from the comic page, the particular reality of the comics isn`t always condensive to fit the movie.
Yes Spiderman 3 made a hell load of money, so??? Everyone hated it, superhero franchises suffer by taking their prosperity too deeply into their hands.

And stop insulting Tobey Maguire as Spiderman. He looks everything like the Peter Parker imaginable to get played on the screen.

  23. “Yes Spiderman 3 made a hell load of money, so??? Everyone hated it, superhero franchises suffer by taking their prosperity too deeply into their hands.”

Not “everyone” hated the film. There are some who loved that film(not me). But, its ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

  24. No after the Sm3 disaster i doubt as much people who`ve went to see spiderman films can get excited about any more at all everyonee hated some parts of it, if you go too crazy with a superhero franchise, everyone will think you`re out of minds, the cost of the element towards themes of the movie and characters just can`t rely on a certain way it will affect them, it would`ve been most necessary to stop at this one and THEN reboot, everyone will think they don`t know what the **** they`re thinking, don`t you think?

  25. oh and please DO NOT DO THE VENOM SPINOFF PLEASE FUKING STOP DOING THE VENOM MOVIE IF YOU`RE DOING IT I`M A REAL 11-YEAR OLD SPIDERMAN WHATEVER TO “BLOW YOUR OWN HORN OFF” MEANS PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF HELL NO VENOM SOLO FILM EVEN IF YOU CAN DO HIM JUSTICE I DON`T CARE NO SOLO FILM PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Writing in CAPS just expresses strong feeling. I just wanna make sure they can read the words.

  26. So are they doing the Venom film before Spiderman 5 then introduce him into the reboot (like the Avengers) or are they doing it after the reboot as a spin-off film?

  27. It’s amazing that people who type in all caps to express strong feelings don’t realize that most people completely skip over their rantings.

I’d like to see a Venom film, and I’d like for them to find someone else other than Eric Foreman for Eddie Brock. They need someone BIGGER, and no amount of weight training is going to make him big enough for the role. This film would HAVE to be done on a smaller budget because it’s NOT going to make the boatloads of cash that Spidey did unless it’s EXTREMELY well made and gets great word-of-mouth.
