Sony's upcoming movie Venom 2 gets an official title, now being called Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Sony released the first Venom film in October 2018, starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, who merges with an alien symbiote to become the anti-hero Venom. The film wasn't necessarily a critical success, though some Venom movie reviews found fun in the dynamic between Eddie and the symbiote. Still, Venom earned $856.1 million at the box office, cementing it as a box office success.

As such, it came as little surprise when Sony put Venom 2 into development, with Hardy to return. The sequel would follow on from the Venom post-credits scene that introduced Carnage. After months of rumors and reports regarding Woody Harrelson's involvement in the first film, the actor didn't appear until the very end, in a scene introducing the serial killer Cletus Kasady, who becomes the villainous symbiote Carnage in the comics. Now, the sequel gets an official title paying homage to the villain.

In addition to revealing the new Venom 2 release date in summer 2021, Sony confirmed the title of the sequel is Venom: Let There Be Carnage. No other information was revealed about the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, like when the studio will begin promoting the film with a poster or trailer of some kind. Given the film's release date delay, fans likely won't see a Venom 2 trailer for some months.

Woody Harrelson as Carnage in Venom movie

The title Venom: Let There Be Carnage doesn't seem to be any specific reference to the Marvel Comics, and instead may be a play on the phrase "let there be light." It also seems to be a direct follow-up to Harrelson's line in the Venom post-credits scene, "There's gonna be carnage." It doesn't necessarily reveal any story details aside from what we already knew, Carnage will be the villain of Venom 2. It's unclear if there will be any additional villains in the sequel, though reports have indicated Carnage's love interest from the comics, Shriek, will also appear.

It also remains to be seen how Venom: Let There Be Carnage might tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony reportedly wanted to have Tom Holland's Spider-Man cameo in the first movie, and since it didn't end up working out, perhaps the studio will include a cameo or connection in the sequel. After all, Morbius is confirmed to be in the MCU and it's expected Venom will be tied in somehow as well. The Venom 2 trailer may offer more insight, but even if Eddie Brock exists in the same universe Holland's Peter Parker, they live on opposite coasts - and have their own problems. Brock will no doubt be battling Carnage in Venom 2 and Parker will be on the run after his identity was revealed at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Though they could perhaps team up or battle each other in a future movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage will seemingly stick to the symbiotes named in the movie's official title.
