Just when you thought the Twilight franchise couldn’t possibly get anymore appealing to the intended demographic… News has come out regarding the anticipated vampire sequel New Moon that High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens is possibly being cast in the role of Leah Clearwater, a character described as “a feisty werewolf.”
The reaction to the news/rumor that Hudgens has auditioned for the role has been mixed, with some web commenters saying things like, “I cannot picture her being mean or aggressive as Leah,” and, “…Of course she can’t look like Leah — no one can. You know why? ‘Cause it’s just a book, and these are actors trying to portray the roles! I think she would be great.” ”Twilight actress Ashley Greene spoke positively of the notion commenting, “I think she’d be great.”
Yeah, but doesn’t a potential fellow cast member have to say that?
Since I haven’t read the original books I can’t comment either way on whether or not Hudgens would be a good pick to play the role. I then have to go purely on descriptions given (such as “feisty werewolf”) and simply whether or not I think Hudgens is a good fit for the next instalment in the movie franchise.
And I am definitely on the “poor choice” side of the fence.
I just can’t see her portraying what is supposed to be a “mean and aggressive” werewolf – she just seems too delicate and cutesy for that kind of thing.
However from a money-making point of view I can totally see why the studio would consider casting her. She’s already a huge draw because of the ludicrously popular High School Musical franchise and it therefore would bring any of those devoted fans (and I don’t need to tell you there are legions of them) over to the Twilight franchise (although most of those are probably fans of it already).
Personally I don’t like the direction they’re taking this franchise with the next installment - first they get rid of Catherine Hardwicke as director and replace her with someone else (I can’t quite figure out why they did that, giving the job to the director of the not very well received The Golden Compass - Hardwicke did a perfectly good job translating it onto the big-screen), then they push for a late 2009 release date effectively rushing the production of it and now they are thinking about casting someone simply because of their popularity.
Is it just me or does this collectively all sound a bit iffy?
Whatever happens, Hudgens or no Hudgens, New Moon is going to make just as much, if not more, than the first film – which did very well especially considering it was just an introduction to a new movie franchise. It looks like the studio has really struck gold with these books.
So what do you make of Hudgens possibly being cast as Leah Clearwater – think she’s a good fit for the character?
New Moon is set to hit theatres on November 20th this year.

Don’t they realize they already have a HUGE fan base? They’re freaking crappifiers. Why don’t they just make Ashley Tisdale a Bella and Zac an Edward and Corbin Bleu a Jacob? Then they could make them dance around the forest with the happy squirrels and birds. They are going to do the stupidest thing ever if they indeed make her Leah and they’re gonna lose sooo many devoted fans. But again, it’s their choice.
I don’t think this a good idea. They shouldn’t pick her just because she is “famous”. I feel like she will bring Leah down. Plus, they will give her more screen time. Vanessa will probably be in every scene or bust out with a song like she did in HSM3. If anyone has seen HSM3..you will get this… SAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Im glad they decided not to have her join and this was just a crazy rumor. It makes me more hopeful now for a more improved movie. I still feel like they are pushing the limits on the movie though. New moon is another 100 pages longer then Twilight so are we still going to get the quality that we are looking for? Are they going to be able to have all the right aspects in this movie in and have it ready by the time they expect it too or they going to have to push the release date back? I wont be against it if they do.
I hope they pick a new unkowen actress to portray Leah so her part is fuffiled the right way and she is not given too much screen time like a lot of us feared Vanessa would.
Guess we will have to wait for more news on this movie.

NOOOOOOOO… she needs to stay FAR away from the twilight movies…. if she is in new moon, i will NOT go see the movie….
First of all, just because Vanessa has done those hsm roles, does not mean she has shown what she is capable of. HSM asked her to play a certain character, and that is exactly what she did. She is still young, and she is part Native American. Also She is so beautiful and this role would allow her to show us her true acting skills.
I feel happy for the fans of the books/film for their victory today

This is ridiculous. They cannot put a Disney channel character in Twillight. They’re just trying to expand the fan base of Twillight. They’ll loose fan base because no one wants to a stupid disney channel character in a film too good for the movies. If people aren’t fans of Twilight let them not be. They’re not worth it. As for the part of Leah, Vannessa coming from HSM can not jump to being a mean wolf-girl. It just doesn’t work. She’s not talented enough for that. I mean there are so many other people out there who can reprise the role of Leah. NOT FROM DISNEY CHANNEL. Now if she is going out with Taylor Lautner (Yeah lets go there lets go there) does Zac Efron know about this? (That I can’t control) Because if he does they got one jacked-up relationship. I dont think Vanessa Hudgens will play a good part for leah she already had her spot light and they should give the part to some one who wants it more and leah doesnt really play in new moon she is mostly in eclipse and breaking dawn. I am currently re-reading the book and Although in real live Vanessa is in her 20′s … well she is 20, if she was playing a role as Leah Clearwater, she would have to be playing a senior role. So technically that is not Sam’s age even though that it was said that the two did date before Sam imprinted with her cousin. Also Stephenie Meyer likes to have more of a metal/ rock theme with the movies so unless Vanessa can produce that kind of sound with her Opera trained voice… i dont think that she’ll be in the soundtrack or movie unless she was acting
I do not believe that vanessa would make a good Leah. She can’t act, and i’m sorry to say that to people who like her but i am saying my opinion. She doesn’t fit the character at all. She isn’t her one bit. They should not put a big actor for Leah because Leah is only a small part but a big character. I am very happy and glad to hear that she isn’t going to be in it, that would have ruined the whole movie for me.
Wow, that would be the most terrible decision ever made if they chose Vanessa Hudgens. Seriously, Twilight was an INCREDIBLE movie, and if they cast her!? They will lose so many fans and money. The role of Leah Clearwater is supposed to be a native looking WOMAN, not a 12 year old looking girl who does not have talent fit to play this part. I have little sisters who used to look up to her until she pulled that scandalous BULLshht. I’m seriously, truly disgusted with her and her poor decisions as a star. I mean, come on! Kids look up to her, they’ll REGRET it if they cast her. I just know it. Look at the comments here, EVERYONE knows it.
If they put her in it she’s just gonna ruin it. I have a feeling she’s just gonna break out dancing she just needs to stick with Disney Channel movie, plus Leah Clearwater is tough and Vanessa is so not she’s a perky little girl. ;p

I personally think that once you become a disney star you are always a disney star. So honestly, if Vannessa Hudgens was casted as a character (Which thank god you confirmed was not true)it would bring in the preppy high school musical fans. Twilight should NOT be compared to highschool musical. The repeated polls of who’s hotter Robert or Zac is such a dead give away. Robert, duh. But with that, we know Twilight is a tottally different story in which should not be soiled by such an actress. I must say that most of the twilight fans are hard core hsm haters. *points to self* So is it fair that when our favorite stories are put up on the big screen, an actress from one of the most IRRITATING musicals can just mosy on down and join the cast? Well I would say not! When I heard this rumor on the news my heart stopped. I’m serious. I hate ALL the disney stars. They really are in their own rated-G world. That is DEFINETLY where they should stay.

Here is my opinion; I think that Vanessa could play Leah, Even though in High School Musical, she was all girly and stuff, doesnt mean that she can’t play a ‘fiesty werewolf’. You guys are just sterotyping her.

no she could never play the role. it would be impossible for her, she is a preppy girl who only knows how to play preppy role where she is a nerd or smart in some way! if you don’t believe me watch the movies thirteen and the thunderbirds!
I read all the books & i think vanessa would be a great Leah! just because she doesn’t show her aggressiveness on television, doesn’t mean she isn’t capable of playing the role!
