New Valkyrie Trailer And Poster

Published 7 years ago by , Updated September 26th, 2008 at 2:38 pm,

Today we have a look at the first poster for Valkyrie as well as a brand new trailer. The first trailer was released last November (I cannot believe it’s been that long already). I didn’t really see much hope for the film from that trailer and I certainly do not buy Tom Cruise’s character… especially since he sounds and seems to act like he does in all of his other films with that American accent.

The poster is pretty stylistic and fits the film adequately. The one thing I find is that it looks a little too “techie” with the grey box-lines everywhere. But really, there’s nothing really good or bad to say about it.

Take a gander at the poster:

Valkyrie stars Mr. Couch-jumper, Tom Cruise and was subject to some negative press due to many problems during its production (Germany vs. Scientology and such). Early on, this film appeared to be a disaster in the making and its release date was constantly shuffled around. Some of these scheduling decisions gave rise to some pretty negative expectations.

Later, we found some hope for the film and juggled the possibility of it actually being good due to some insiders seeing an early version and praising director Bryan Singer’s work on it.

To complete the 180-degree reversal on the expectation front, we saw yet another scheduling change of the film. This time, it was brought back into 2008, for a Christmas release. Why you may ask? Well, apparently the test screenings went so well, MGM studies wanted the film presented for the holiday season and to take a little run at the Oscars.

And here’s the new trailer – take a look and see what you think:

I think the new trailer is a big improvement and it certainly makes me more excited to see the film. We get a much better feel for the tone and style of the movie, and even a glimpse into how Cruise’s character acquired the need for an eye-patch.

With that being said, I still am not buying into Tom being a German in the 1940s and every time he speaks, it takes me right out of the film (or trailer I guess). This is especially noticeable in combination with other actors having entirely different accents. I also don’t think its just his accent (or lack thereof), I think its just the manner in which he’s speaking. It’s a little too modern and as good as Cruise is in most of his films, it just doesn’t fit well here. To me, he’s basically the same guy from Lions for Lambs.

What do you think about the poster and trailers? Will this film be any good and will it do any good at the box office?

Valkyrie is due out this December 26th.

  1. Tom Cruise certainly seems crazy enough to be a nazi.

  2. It’s hard for me to take him seriously in a role that deserves and demands an actor to be taken seriously. I think he’s lost a lot of his star quality and will always be, from now on, labeled as the Scientology nut that used to put out good action movies.

  3. Yeah, he is a good actor, I’ll give him that, but way to full of himself. I have a hard time liking a movie if I don’t like how the lead actor is in reality. he said people thanked him for his role in The War of the Worlds, when he got in the argument with that news guy. that bothered me.

  4. Holy crap.

What kind of a poster is THAT? Ok, so obviously they want to get across the impression that this isn’t your typical WWII-based flick but come ON…what’s with all those random grey boxes? Did they hire some kid from MySpace to totally pimp up the poster? I mean, it’d actually be pretty decent if that white space behind the characters was just that…a white space! It’d look sleek and fairly classy. Right now, with all those grey boxes it’s a confused and schizophrenic mess.

Y’know, I would actually be looking forward to this movie if it didn’t star Tom bloody Cruise. I’ve nothing against him for the wackiness or the whole ‘I’m a scientologist, bleh’ thing but, seriously, who in the heck thought that Tom Cruise of all people would make a decent Nazi?

    Me neither.

Please, Bryan Singer, please do a few smaller flicks with unknowns after this one. You’re too good of a director to be lumped in with this kind of crap.

  5. They gray boxes look like a floor layout/building plans with the red line as a trail to something?

    Might just be me =)

  6. I was looking forward to this from the first trailer. Still looks good to me.

Anyway, too bad they don’t make WWI/II-movies like they used to. I mean germans spoke german, englishmen spoke english and americans spoke american englisch. That’s why I loved Der Untergang, that brute german language just gives an edge to the whole experience and a real sense of reality!

  7. No Rev, it’s not just you… those “box- lines” are clearly blueprints if anybody bothers to look twice. I believe the space that appears behind Cruise on the poster is the conference room where the bomb would be placed to kill Hitler and the top regime figures in Operation Valkyrie.

  8. In a world,,, where Nazi’s realise that evil has taken over,,,, there is one last hope Valkyrie…Lol…

Cruise looks like he’s auditiong for Snake Plisken…

  9. “…and as good as Cruise is in most of his films,” Rob! are you kidding?

Tom Cruise has always been and will always be just an OK actor in some really good movies.
When’s the last time anyone saw a Cruise film that was good BECAUSE he was in it?

He always plays the same character, Tom Cruise in every movie he does.

He’s box office poison but no will come out (in Hollywood) and say it.

PREDICTION: This will be another Cruise movie where he will be upstaged by his co-star(s). Remember Collateral, W.O.T.W, Last Samurai, MI3?

  10. Personal preference I guess JesseH,

I think he was great in Collateral, Last Samurai and MI3. Minority Report happens to be one of my favourite movies, and Top Gun one of my favourites when I was a kid.

Wasn’t a fan of him in WOTW though.
