Valhalla Rising Gruesome New Trailer For Valhalla Rising

IFC Films has unveiled a new trailer for the macabre Viking tale Valhalla Rising before its release in the states this month, and it definitely looks to be a gruesome scenic affair.

Valhalla Rising stars Mads Mikkelsen (the blood-crying villain from Casino Royale) as One-Eye, “a mute warrior of supernatural strength… forced to fight for his life and the amusement of his pagan slavers.” One-Eye manages to escape via the help of a young boy and eventually falls in with a band of Vikings as he is forced to “confront terrible fate in the quest for [his] freedom.”

Director Nicolas Winding Refn – best know for gritty, violent material like Bronson and The Pusher Trilogy – recently made headlines when he declared his personal interest in helming a Wonder Woman movie. Based off the footage in this trailer for his new film, Refn would certainly bring an eye for dark, uncouth visuals to that project – should he be given the opportunity, that is.

You can check out the new Valhalla Rising trailer below (NOTE: This trailer contains snippets of graphic violence and gore so it is definitely NSFW):

There’s an undeniably low-budget feel to this trailer – the fake-looking spurts of blood especially stick out – though the cinematography looks to be impressively chilly and subdued.  In the post-300 age of violent quasi-historical epics, it’s ironically kind of refreshing to see a film like Valhalla Rising where the gory fight sequences are not filmed in a highly-stylized fashion.

What do you think?  Does Valhalla Rising look like an interesting action pic?  Does watching this trailer make you more interested in seeing Refn bring Wonder Woman to the big screen?  Sound off in the comments section below.

Valhalla Rising will open in theaters in New York on July 16th, 2010.  It will expand beginning July 30th and will be available on demand via IFC Midnight.

  1. I really like the story, however I wish it was done a little better. This won’t be something I’m going to rush to see, however I’ll probably catch it on demand if there’s nothing else on.

  2. NO!! to this guy ever doing a Wonder Woman movie.

  3. Naked amazons running around killing men and defiling their bodies. Hmmm…

Sounds like a good premise for a porn movie.

  4. This looks as though the palette has been bleached (à la Daredevil but with obviously more esthetically pleasing results) and the blood recolored in red. I think that choice makes sense if the movie is chronologically placed in the lower middle ages, as if to visually impart the bleakness of life and the violence of a dog eat dog world.

Aside from that, it doesn’t look like much of a movie I’ll be seeing, the parts of the whole look good, but the overall is way too grim for me.

  5. Shame about the cheesy sound effects. I hope it is limited to the trailer, or that sound editor needs to be fired.

  6. Not that interested but the lead actor, Mads Mikkelsen, is very interesting. Really enjoyed him as the villain in CASINO ROYALE (one of the few good things about it to the more traditional Bond Fan) and even though CLASH wasn’t an INCEPTION like type of film, this actor did bring some ‘improvement’ to it.

Would really like to see Mads as a lead or string co-lead in something of real significance. Perhaps another villian in something like a properly done Marvel or DC COmic Book film.

  7. Another movie where Mads Mikkelsen has a messed up eye.Should be good.

  8. liked it

  9. looks like a PoS low budget waste of time. wtf do movies like this get to the big screen anyways ?

  10. This has been out on DVD for ages!
