One of director Luc Besson’s best-known and most memorable movies to date is 1997’s The Fifth Element – a grand space adventure that lovingly embraced its own weirdness and was generally super green. Besson recently dabbled in the sci-fi genre once again with action movie Lucy, but now he’s going back out into the far reaches of the imagination once again with Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, an adaption of Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières’ comic book series Valérian and Laureline, which stars Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) and Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad).
The movie’s two lead characters, Valerian (DeHaan) and Laureline (Delevingne), are special operatives who work for the government of human territories in the universe, whose job is to maintain order among those territories (basically, they’re space cops). Valerian desires to be more than simply a professional partner to Laureline, but she rebuffs his advances at every turn.
Valerian impressed the Hall H audience at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, where the first footage was unveiled, and now people all over the world have their first look at Besson’s new adventure thanks to the debut of a teaser trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Though the trailer features a heavy dose of CGI, rather than the rubber suits and practical make-up effects of the aliens in The Fifth Element, it’s nonetheless a visually impressive teaser that promises two compelling characters at the center of the story.
