Val Kilmer Career Update

I’m a huge Val Kilmer fan. I think that he is one of the best actors working today. I don’t mean that as hyperbole – I mean that as fact!

Kilmer had a brief moment in the mid-to late 90′s where he was a major star and I have always been a bit saddened that this was never capitalised on.

Kilmer has a charisma and a work ethic that nobody else in Hollywood seems to have!

Not only has he just wrapped Streets of Blood, the man has Felony coming out this month (US only), the currently filming Thaw in the pipeline as well as his recent attachment to the indie drama The Silver Cord, but the former Batman has also now signed up to the Werner Herzog directed remake of The Bad Lieutenant.

Kilmer will play the partner of Nicolas Cage. The film also stars Xzibit and Eva Mendes.

Over the past several years Kilmer has come under a lot of fire about the films that he makes and the fact the he has put on a bit of weight.

Who cares?

The man is a fantastic actor- delivering incredible performances in a wide variety of films.

I feel that Kilmer is at the most interesting point of his career – he’s obviously choosing films for the challenge and not the paycheck – which is rare in Hollywood today.

I’m looking forward to all these films and feel that if we don’t give Kilmer some credit soon – then we might – strike that – will regret it in the future.

Oh – and on a total side note – he made a great Batman.

  1. IT is so sad, when good middle-aged actors (as opposed to “performers”) are construed as “big-time” when they are offered roles playing CARTOON SUPER HEROES IN TIGHTS. Its like using a diamond tiara to punch a nail in. VAL KILMER is good, but I sincerely don't like seeing him play ANOTHER COMIC BOOK HERO like Captain America or Avenger or Thor. He definitely has ISSUES, but ACTION MOVIES maybe is a better avenue than DRAMA. He nearly UPSTAGED TOM CRUISE in TOP GUN!! I think he ROCKS as a pilot, soldier, detective, or warrior. ICEMAN has always been my idol over MAVERICK. MAVERICK (Tom Cruise) is a midget, and it is laughable seeing him 'get it on' with a very “fleshy” and taller CHARLIE (Kelly McGillis). Can't help but chuckle to myself in the movie house!! My opinion is that, like in the “SAINT”, Val is “not cagey or difficult… only ECCENTRIC.” Most poets are. And Val IS a poet and composer. I guess when you are a SUPERSTAR, people build expectations of you that are unjustified. Val comes across as a “leading man” type, so people expect him to be 'gracious and polite' as the stereotype says. REALITY BITES, and stars are NOT what they seem. Val is a hard-working perfectionist, with a soft heart, and a sensitive ego — hardly the “cuddly, charming, lovable” leading man stereotype. His marriage might have been a mistake, and I think he ought to be “more practical” in choosing mates in the future.. Val has a tendency to “go head over heels”, then suddenly give the “cold shoulders” later. His first wife he met in WILLOW, which is NOT a very good movie (even for kids). And I guess he went OVERBOARD with that woman, and now, she wants her life back.. without him. I think Val will bounce back, and the only question is WHEN.

  3. You can’t be serious. I just finished watching ‘Gun’ 2010 by 50cents in which Val Kilmer stars as well and I can’t get my head around how such a prominent actor is making a string of unwatchable movies. Such a disappointment. And don’t get me started on Nicholas Cage… Con Air and Face Off were the peak of his career. Everything went downhill after that. I mean, Ghost Rider? Seriously?
