USA’s summer drama Suits will be returning for at least another year, as the network announced a Season 2 order today. Necessary Roughness, USA’s second new show this summer, is expected to be renewed soon after.

The network made the announcement as both shows have continued to receive positive buzz. Following in the well-trodden footsteps of other buddy dramas like White Collar and Royal PainsSuits is an audience hit, scoring an aggregate of 8/10 and 9/10 from user reviews on Metacritic and IMDB, respectively. Necessary Roughness hasn’t fared quite as well (though impressions are still favorable overall), but both shows have maintained excellent ratings.

The renewal comes after just seven episodes for Suits. And why not – it’s been performing very well for a freshman cable show, scoring 4.6 million viewers on the pilot episode and dipping only slightly since. After the +7 numbers came in (which include DVR playback), the pilot had a total of 6.3 million viewers with an impressive 2.8 in the 18-49 demographic, USA’s 3rd-best pilot ever.

Suits comes from Everybody Loves Raymond writer Aaron Korsh, who wrote the pilot for USA back in 2010. Under its working title, A Legal Mind, Gabriel Macht (The Spirit, Behind Enemy Lines) and Patrick J. Adams (Old School) were cast in the leading roles of a hotshot lawyer and his brilliant but uncertified protege. Doug Liman and David Bartis of USA’s Covert Affairs served as executive producers for the pilot, with the former staying on for the series.

The network is quick to note that Suits is pushing boundaries, at least for USA. Co-president Jeff Wachtel had this to say on the style and substance of the show:

“With Suits, we’ve gone to a new level of storytelling and visual sophistication and to a little bit of an edgier place – Harvey is not immediately likable and the young hero has made so many bad choices in his life, when we meet him he is dealing drugs. For a network that has made its mark with aspirational characters and smart escapism, this is a step in a new direction.”

Suits is wrapping up its first year of production right now, with the last shooting day scheduled for tomorrow. The show’s initial twelve-episode run will conclude a month from now on September 8th, with the second season of twelve episodes likely to follow next summer.

While breaking the story, Deadline Hollywood notes that USA’s other summer premiere, Necessary Roughness, is also likely to receive a Season 2 order in the near future. The show started a week later than Suits to take advantage of the NFL season (Callie Thorne plays a therapist specializing in professional athletes) and production will continue until late August.

Necessary Roughness follows Danni Santino (Thorne), a recent divorcee struggling to provide for her kids with her psychiatry practice. She gets a big break when the local football team hires her as a team therapist, after which she becomes a popular practitioner across the pro sports world. Written by Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro, the show is based on the real-life experiences of Dr. Donna Dannenfelser, who was hired as the team mental health professional for the New York Jets.

Necessary Roughness has performed almost as well as its fellow newcomer, consistently scoring above four million viewers. Like Suits, its first season consists of twelve episodes, scheduled to end on September 14th, just a few days after the start of the NFL’s regular season.

  1. I like Suits. It as it’s problems, but the characters make it all work.

I got through about ten minutes of the pilot for Necessary Roughness and then turned it off. Perhaps it’s just not my thing, but something about that show just rubbed me the wrong way.

    • I’ve watched one episode of Necessary Roughness. I get the feeling that it’s not made for me – it’s a very female show. That’s not a judgement or a put-down, it’s just the way I see it. The one woman I know who has watched it (who’s studying for her psychology doctorate) gave it a pretty lukewarm reception.

  2. ‘Suits’ was one of my favorite new shows, with ‘Franklin & Bash’ and ‘Falling Skies’ right behind it! It’s a shame they’re making us wait a whole year before new seasons come! A lot can happen in a year, for a new show… Just look at ‘The Walking Dead’…

  3. Suits-Bring it on!

  4. I really enjoy Suits, I’m glad to hear it got renewed. I also enjoy Necessary Roughness, but since the time conflicts with Deadliest Warrior I usually have to catch it when it is re-run. I enjoy watching Callie Thorne, she has a great smile!

  5. Live both shows. I’m so excited about the romance sparking up again between Danni and the trainer! Such a cute couple!!

  6. Love both shows… but definitely hope Necessary Roughness is renewed. Love the characters and the mix of psychology goes into the mix.

  7. I actually really liked Necessary Roughness. I’ve kept up with it and can’t wait for the season finale. I guess that doesn’t say much, considering Crider’s comment and considering I’m a female and all. I guess I’m just a sap for a good head shrinking. It’s always nice to learn why people do what they do. I must say, though, it is a bit predictable and that’s never fun.

    • Well, I’m of the male species and I am a big fan of Necessary Roughness. It kind of had to grow on me, but by the third episode I was hooked. I’m not sure why some viewers would call it a “feminine” show. Actually, I’m not sure what that means exactly. Yes, the main character is a woman but most of the supporting cast is not and several of the stories focus on a professional football team. I just think the relationships on the show are interesting and the stories quite different from what you see on most shows. I really like Callie Thorne. She shows both a vulnerabe and a tough side, not to mention that I think she is really hot. And her struggle to be a single parent while working at a very demanding job is something to which both men and women should be able to relate. I’m looking forward to Season 2.

      • love your comment! great show it is for both men and women. my husband I love it the same.

  8. I give Suits a 10/10! Perfect show, wish there were more episodes though. Feel jipped waiting so long for s2. Being an executive, I can relate to it and feel it’s fit the thirty-something age group.
Pay no attention to neg critics of Necessary Roughness. I dig it. It fits today’s times rather well. The have nots are the likely haters. Shake it off.

  9. I love both shows. Suits is definately my favorite but both are great shows. In fact USA has had a fantastic summer line up!

  10. Writing from South-Africa. Just want to give suits a thumbs up! Really great show. Can’t wait for season2, just bummed I have to wait a year!! Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams are great!!

  11. Im totally loving necessary roughness, suits doesnt really go with me as im stl in school so its boring. Hope we get season two of Necessary Roughness

  12. My husband and I are selective viewers and Suits is at the only show we are excited to watch (and truly plan time for) and are pleased to hear it’s coming back for a second season. Smart move!

  13. Necessary roughness is great. I love her reactions when she feels defeated or deflated. That’s exactly how every woman feels when the man she likes is with another woman, or when he gives her a glimmer of hope that they may reconcile. The banter between the kids and between her and the kids is also realistic. Their arguments are so real of those from a broken home.

  14. My husband and I love Necessary roughness. We watch alot of football in our home and love seeing the behind seans.

  15. UK Viewer – just finished watching season 1 and I LOVE IT. Harvey is brilliant. It reminds me a lot of house how it seems half way that things are impossible to recover, then through genius they manage to pull it out of the bag. Oh and the girl in the office ‘brunette’ is smoking!!! Bring on season 2 :)

    • S2law, I’m excited as well!! I love that show! Harvey’s just so freaking smooth!! I can’t wait!

  16. I love Necessary Roughness. Fantastic show, really hoping for season 2. Suits is good too.

  17. Love both shows!!!!

  18. Hi I love Suits and its my favorite show to rush home to every Thursday after my volleyball games and I also stay up to watch the replay late night… Just wondering when the next season starts……

  19. OMG! I have just finished Season 1. I started yesterday evening, and watched finale today. It’s a great show, all 12 episodes. I’m loving it so much. I watch The Walking Death as well, but Suits really catches me.. Can’t wait for season 2!

  20. Love Necessary Roughness. My husband and teenage son also love the show. So much for it being a feminine show.

  21. I am waiting for Necessary Roughness to come back. Also, I would like to buy the first season. When will that be???

  22. OMG!!!!!! I love this tv show!!! Harvey Spectrum is so smooth and sexy!! I absolutely CAN NOT wait until the new season starts! I think they should start now with the promos!!! I love it! All of the characters played amazing roles!

  23. Suits is original and funny. Great characters ! When does season 2 start?

  24. How can you NOT bring back Suits!!!! This was one of the best shows on the network!!! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!! Awesome job!

  25. So glad that Suits will be back & hope it will return for years 3 & 4. It’s a show with great writing and acting. Clever situations with some twists in the stories that keeps your interest. And, watching good looking guys that are dressed so well is a real pleasure (just like watching MadMen) Love this New Show! !

  26. I love this show!!!
Exceptional writing with perfectly cast characters.
Well done, keep up the outstanding work.

  27. I’m a senior in high school, and i just love Suits. I’ve been waiting anxiously for the next season since it ended. Harvey is absolutely and undoubtedly my favorite character, he has so much confidence in himself, witty and is just full of swag. This is one show USA has done right. Can’t wait for more!!! Seniors 2012!!

  28. Suits IS THE BEST, such a great show, cant wait when it starts again, when is the second season start?

    • It starts an interesting way, but getting rid of donna? Huge mistake!!!!

    • I really liked suits. But I feel bad I went to Yankee stadium this past summer and was waiting in line to get a pretzel and soda and I ripped a ripe one. It was loud and kinda wet towards the end. It was stinky and gross. I felt something run down my leg. It turned out to be a shart. Anyways I turned around and the girl that played Racheal or her exact twin was standing behind me with a disgusted look on her face. Looked like she was gonna puke. So I turned back around waited in line bought my stuff. Then I was walking by her I said you are gross and you should check your drawls ya fat pig. She looked really confused. But she never will forget me

  29. Getting rid of Donna is not cool. Suits is the best show on TV right now. I use to have hair like Harvey 15yrs ago. My 25yr old sister loves suits to.
