USA Premieres ‘Suits’ & ‘Necessary Roughness’ This Summer

USA is preparing a pair of new series for this summer, in addition to an already packed schedule of established shows. Suits will premiere June 23rd, with Necessary Roughness following on June 29th.

Suits is the new name for A Legal Mind, a pilot that USA picked up from writer Aaron Korsh (The Deep End) and producer David Bartis (Knight Rider 2008). It follows a top-notch New York corporate lawyer who recruits a brilliant college dropout. Both must keep up appearances to keep the slacker’s past buried.

Gabriel Macht, who starred in The Spirit and Love and Other Drugs, plays Manhattan lawyer Harvey Specter. Patrick J. Adams, who’s had bit parts on NCIS, Lie to Me and FlashForward plays Specter’s new associate. Suits follows USA’s penchant for typical television scenarios turned upside-down; given the creators’ resumes, expect a tongue-in-cheek comedy/drama mix a la Burn Notice.

Necessary Roughness is about a female therapist for a pro football team. The series is based on the experiences of a real-life therapist for the New York Jets. It’s written by┬áLiz Kruger and Craig Shapiro, with Kevin Dowling (Army Wives, Joan of Arcadia) serving as executive producer.

Callie Thorn has been cast in the lead role of “tough love” therapist Dani Santino. She’s best known as Rescue Me‘s firebrand Sheila Keefe. Mark Blucas (Inglourious Basterds) plays the team’s trainer.

The two newcomers join a slew of original programming that USA has lined up for the summer. Returning favorites Burn Notice and Royal Pains will serve as lead-ins for Suits and Necessary Roughness, respectively. Other returning shows include Law & Order: Criminal Intent, White Collar, Covert Affairs and In Plain Sight.

It’s impressive to see a cable channel with so new content in the middle of the summer, when most networks give their shows a break to build up episodes for the fall. Of course, that’s probably a big reason for the decision: USA won’t be competing with the big four for eyeballs.

Not that the network needs to pull punches for viewership. USA has been the most-watched cable network for almost five straight years, capitalizing on the success of shows like Monk, Psych and Burn Notice, along with strategic reruns of network shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and House.

Suits premieres June 23rd at 10PM on USA.

Necessary Roughness premieres June 29th at 10PM.

  1. It feels like all the top comments about the ‘nasty’ language in Suits are written by the same person… just saying
I think that the show is A-MA-ZING! I can’t wait till the next episode.
And everybody else should stop crying about the bad language. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. It’s not a family show.
I understand that people think it’s bad that they swear a lot, but it’s a great show anyways.

  2. What is wrong with you people? theres alot more things to moan about than a BIT of swearing get a life! Its a superb Tv series very well written and good cast cant wait for s02 ep 11-16 in jan!
