Yesterday, IGN spoke to Thor director Kenneth Branagh at the LA premiere for his television movie series, Wallander. In the interview, they briefly discussed the schedule for Thor as well as the confirmation of one of the candidates in the running to play the lead.
Since Branagh’s Wallander will be having a second series, IGN asked the Shakespearean writer/actor/director how that will affect production on Thor. Branagh responded revealing that principal photography for the Marvel flick will begin in January.

“Well, I’m working currently on Thor for Marvel and we’re planning that one. We’re having a great time at the moment. We’re in intense pre-production… I shoot Thor in January of next year and because the time of release has been moved, it’s allowed me to have a moment in the summer where I can shoot the Wallanders.”
Later in the interview, Branagh confirmed that his co-star from Wallander, Tom Hiddleston, is in fact, in the running to play Thor at the moment with so many names in the hat. This was rumored not long ago with Hiddleston listed amongst other Thor candidates such as Josh Hartnett, Liam Hemsworth, Joel Kinnaman, Charlie Hunnam and Alexander Skarsgård.
It seems completely up in the air as to who’s the lead choice to play the God of Thunder. For a short while it seemed that Alexander Skarsgård was likely to be chosen but last week Screen Rant reported that young Skarsgård wasn’t too sure that he was still in the running since he hadn’t been contacted in a while. Shortly thereafter, Charlie Hunnam revealed that he had recently screen-tested for the role but was also unsure as to where Branagh and co. were in terms of casting. Now with Branagh confirming Hiddleston’s chances, who knows who they are leaning towards.
Since we’re on the topic (again) of who may play the Asgardian hammer-wielding hero, I’d like to briefly discuss another potential candidate who we’ve not covered before on Screen Rant but have been hearing about for quite some time.
If you want Thor to be played by a hulking physique of a man, who’s tall, thick and ripped – A man experienced in fighting who sports long blonde hair – A warrior-turned-actor who’s quickly gaining experience and will no doubt have some big roles in the future – Then James Preston Rogers may be your Thor.

James Preston Rogers’ sporting warrior tattoos
Many of you who have been following rumors about the Thor movie have probably come across the name of James Preston Rogers, an ex-wrestler who left the WWE to pursue his true passion of acting. He’s been popping up on fansites and earning a bit of an online following with his desires to play Thor. There’s an online petition, a facebook group and other sites out there supporting him as well as this MTV video audition made with him detailing why he should be cast:
From reading and watching interviews with the Canadian up-and-coming actor, he obviously wants the part and seems like a great down-to-earth guy who’s knowledgeable of the character. Despite some small roles in films such as Outlander (he does all of his own stunts… obviously), James Preston Rogers is relatively new to the acting business and is lesser known than the six candidates listed above. For the execs making the casting decision, that will be something that could hold him back.

James Preston Rogers wants to be Thor and wants your support!

With the delayed release date of the film, I’d expect to hear come casting updates late this summer as they prepare for the January production start.
What do you think of the Thor candidates and my added choice of James Preston Rogers?
The revised release date for Thor is June 17, 2011.

The only person I was really psyched about rumored to play Thor was Kevin McKidd, but that’s obviously not going to happen, but it’s ok now that news broke that they are working on a Rome movie. Man that’s going to rock, I hope that pulls through…
If rogers passion was acting…whyd he leave WWE? haha. I cant wait to see who they actually cast for this!
Alexander Skarsgård all the way… He definitely has the physique and is also a really talented actor, which is recommended lol… I mean wrestlers turned actors? no thank you…
Anyone have a clip of this guy in a good acting segment.
His face is a little withered compared to the boyish looking Marvel Thor.
NO WRESTLERS!
Skarsgard is the ONLY great choice for this role. Everyone else is an also ran.
Gotta support our canucks, right Rob!
That’s right SK-47
@ Ken J, I’m a big McKidd fan too and I liked the idea back in the day of him playing Thor. Rome is amazing and I can’t wait for the movie either.
Out of the choices we know about, Skarsgård is the candidate I’ve been supporting all along, he’s still my #1 choice.
I’m not 100% on this.
I was supremely fond of Skarsgård in the role until I saw this wrestler guy.
It’s not that he’s an amazing actor, by far, but let’s face it- It’s a comic book movie about the son of Odin in the modern day. His tongue-in-cheek humour, coupled with the fact he -really- looks the part, even moreso than Alexander Skarsgård, and the fact he’s dying to get the role, in as much to make his own audition “in-character” Much like Brian Austin Green trying for the Green Lantern, I’d say the passion is there, hence it’s more deserved he get the part he so seeks.
Yeah Rob, my problem though is that James should make a proper audition tape as Thor. Be in character and act out some scenes taken from some issues. Not this stupid vid on MTV Live.
I only say this because I HATE MTV Canada! Other than the fact that I wanna get with Aliyah or Diane (Rob might know who they are), MTV Canada is complete trash! And I know what it really is, a modern day minstrel show!
Sorry for the rant, but point is, James should do his own audition and have his agent send it immediately to Marvel/Branagh.
Yeah right.
This movie seems a mash-up. Branagh can’t make up his mind or get it together. And…Tom Hiddleston??? Who the hell is he? James Preston Rogers looks ‘good’ in his warrior tats, though. I appreciate Alex K.’s ideas. I agree with Rob Keyes, Alexander has always been my #1. I read that after True Blood wraps Skarsgard will film a comedy in Sweden. It will interesting to read the next chapter on Branagh and Thor.
Um, MTV anywhere is complete garbage…
I do admire Rogers passion for the role.
We shall see how it shakes out.
It will probably besomebody we know very little about.
We have to take in account that whoever is cast, their chemistry has to gel with RDJ, supposedly Ed Norton as the Hulk, the person who is picked to play Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Captain America (Neil McDonaugh)and so on.
I know that Branaugh has a good working relationship with Tom Hiddleston, but nobody knows who the hell he is in the States.
Branden,
Who knew who Christopher Reeve was when Richard Donner cast him as Superman?
im w/ andy s on that wrestlers are NOT actors, they need to cast someone who is actually an actor
Bah. Just because he’s a wrestler doesn’t mean he can’t act, and I’m sick of seeing so many people discount wrestlers-turned-actors just because some of them have made less than stellar performances.
Most of you probably haven’t seen Outlander (it had a very limited release), and his role wasn’t that big, but he did a good job and I could definitely see him playing Thor.
If I could choose, I’d probably still go with Skarsgard, but I’d be happy with Rogers. He’s also the only guy anyone has mentioned so far that could play the role tomorrow, what with him already being in peak condintion.
That Tom Hiddleton guy would be horrible, well maybe he could be his gimped alter-ego… IF that WWE guy can in fact act, I think he looks the part and might be bad ass. Im not a fan of WWE and I’m not really sure how many comic fans are so I don’t think its gonna taint the production or anything, I think hes a descent choice.
Whoa!
If you want someone who can act, is built better than my Armor, huge and can scare the crap outta you when he flexes… look back at the WWE… look at ‘HHH” (Triple H! He already is a ‘God of Thunder’! He has the range and humor that is needed. May be to popular tho… Give him an audition! – Stark
Wow. Just no.
Skarsgard would be my top pick. Though Hiddleston might make an interesting choice.
I’m I the only person that’s a bit tired of hearing about who’s gonna be Thor?Just get Triple H and be done with it.
It’s not like it’s really gonna matter anyway. The way most of these comic movies have been going, chances are that we will be disappointed anyway.
This whole wrestlers can’t act thing is idiotic. Obviously none of you have seen the Hulkster in was it like Mr. Nanny (or something like that..I think I’m right), or all of The Rock’s spectacular films. Hahaha. Okay so there hasn’t been a good Wrestler turned actor yet, but give this Rogers guy a chance. He does have the look, as long as he can pull off the way thor talks then I’m all for it. It is a comic book movie and, as much as I love them, they are more about action and special effects then acting. He can’t do any worse then good old Nick Cage did in Ghost Rider.
Steve Austin isn’t too bad, but can’t go as far as call his acting “good.”
@branden
Green lantern ?… he’s from DC… not Marvel…lol. Can’t believe no one noticed that he wrote that. Anyways isn’t this movie being made by Fox?… and if so… would it really matter who’s casted as Thor if the movie… well you know how fox is. But that’s just me thinking outloud… i do want this movie to do good… the hulk vs thor was awesome so it would be cool to see thor just pounding on loki.
i do believe its made by MARVEL so they can set up for the avengers.
@ jago,
Thor is owned my Marvel Studios and that’s how he’ll cross over into the other films and appear in The Avengers.
And I noticed the Green Lantern thing too
Didn’t get a chance to comment earlier.
ahhhh… thanks rob… should have paid more attention to that one thread where you guys divided all of them to there “rightful” owners.
I really don’t care who plays THOR in the movie, but if he doesn’t look like THOR, it’s gonna suck as bad as the SYFY movie, “THOR: hammer of the gods”.(i know, not based on the comic)But come on, a faux-hawk??? HHH has the look, but i think we’ll all just be expecting him 2 spit water @ Loki. James Rogers looks like he could be a great THOR. He’s definatly got the look.
Everybody deserves a chance ! I agree with the guy about the Rock sorry agh Rock! You will never appear in a movie with Sly Stallome nothing personal ! Triple H maybe even Lex Luger or The Ultimate Warrior ! Hulk Hogan was good how about the series he had with a few other Wrestlers! He was also in a Walker Texas Ranger Episode ! I would like to submit some Ideas of my own for a Few projects Marvel is doing ! Nicholas Cage did good as Johnny Blaze! Can you do better? Best Wishes to the director ! And of course Marvel and the Man Stan Lee!
when can we start to see pictures of chris hemsworth in thor costume
