UPDATE: Jon Favreau confirms that not only WILL there by flying in the movie, but the scenes shown in the recently released trailer will be in the film as well.
Here’s is Jon’s reply to the question of whether Iron Man will fly in the movie:
“[The flying scenes from the trailer are] in the movie. It’s true that the shots were rushed for Comic Con, but the F-22 dogfight has been in the works for over a year and was the furthest along of the film’s set pieces. That’s how we were able to get it on the screen nearly a year before the premiere.”
Variety just put out a story stating that the extremely cool Iron Man/jet flight scenes shown in the trailer will NOT be in the movie:
“A spokesman for Industrial Light & Magic confirms that the flying Iron Man shots are not ‘finals’ (completed, delivered visual effects) and were only made for the film’s Comic-Con promo reel.”
The problem with their headline is that it states:
Paramount grounds ‘Iron Man’
Superhero flies in trailer but won’t in film
| |
I think the guy is drawing a completely incorrect conclusion, and is assuming that because that scene won’t be in the film that Iron Man won’t fly in the film at all. How he gets from:
“the flying Iron Man shots… were only made for the film’s Comic-Con promo reel”
to:
“Superhero… won’t [fly] in film”
is beyond me.
If it’s true that there won’t be any flying by Iron Man in the film, that’ll be a HUGE mistake IMHO – probably the first one I’ve heard of related to this movie, and for it to be such a whopper leads me to believe that the writer may not have his facts straight.

For that sort of budget, and Iron Man won’t fly? You gotta be kidding.. what did they spend the budget for, shooting on-site in Fallujah?
Probably the Variety writer doesn’t have much common sense..
The writer of the article must be completely mistaken. I mean, I can hardly remember Iron Man walking for more than five minutes, if at all, in the comics.
Iron Man has to fly simply because Stark’s character wouldn’t allow him to pass up the opportunity to make a flying suit.
Variety author = idiot. Iron Man will fly and will fight Raptors in the film. Just the sequence as we saw it in the trailer will NOT be in film.

Article is very misleading, there will be flying and there will be F-22 Raptor dogfights.

Dave, thanks. Jon’s post on the myspace forum was in response to my question, but thanks for pointing out he had answered it.
I’ve updated the story to reflect that.

I actually e-mailed the guy and he said that he doesn’t write the headlines, the web team does. So he’s pinning it on them and apparently sending them a complaint as he’s received several e-mails about this issue.
Yeah, he emailed me saying the same thing.
Vic
IM not flying is in his film is completely ridiculous! Maybe these writers should get high after they write their articles….
I can’t wait to see the dogfight. I’m hoping it will be more than just him blasting the fighters with his repulser rays. I wanna see him punching the planes and ripping their wings off.
Are we sure he is actually going to fight the Raptors? I mean I for all we know he might just out run/maneuver them, no? After all, he is supposed to be a good guy. Then again, we don’t know why they are chasing him in the first place. It could be they just detected Iron Man and have sent them in to investigate.
I don’t know whether he will be fighting them or as you say, just flying with them. In the trailer they certainly seemed to be on the same side, didn’t they?
Vic
In Jon’s reply he uses the word “dogfight”. Doesn’t that mean planes fighting? It doesnt mean that Iron Man will be fighting the planes, but it would be sorta silly if he just sat back and watched wouldn’t it?
I think it might have something to do with Obadiah Stane usurping Stark from Stark Industries, and convincing the government that Stark is a traitor who supplied weapons to rogue nations and stuff like that (when it’s actually Stane who stole Starks Technologies’ weapons and supplied them to terrorists), causing Stark to be pursued.. in the process, he’ll have to clear his name, reveal that Stane is the bad guy, and fight Iron Monger in the finale.
Hence, when Iron Man escaped from some scene, Raptors were dispatched to bring him in, and he has no choice but to battle the Raptors (while ensuring the pilots ejected from the destroyed planes, of course).
Well, that’s just my assumption..
