The Avengers are Earth's mightiest heroes, but they're also some of Earth's strongest personalities. Given the complex web of egos, abilities, and drama within the team, it's natural not everyone gets along. But a lot of the time the Avengers do, and that leads to some unlikely friendships in Marvel Comics.

Lots of different heroes (and some villains) have been Avengers at one point or another, leading to a long, complicated web of friendships that goes back to the very origins of the team in the early 60s. Some have endured the entire time, while others are more recent

Scarlet Witch And The Vision

Vision and the Scarlet Witch driving a car.

The romance between The Vision and Scarlet Witch is one of the strangest Avengers romances, but also one of the greatest. As WandaVision has shown, their love is rooted in a deep friendship that is as unusual as it is real. The two have nothing in common, with one being a synthezoid and the other a powerful mutant witch. But Wanda and Vision bonded over a shared sense of being strangers among the other Avengers. Wanda helped Vision become more human, and he helped her become more assertive and confident in herself.

Spider-Woman And Captain Marvel

Jessica Drew and Carol Danvers have one of the oldest and strongest friendships in the Avengers. It's also one of the most unlikely. The two have nothing in common when they first meet in Avengers Annual #10 when Jessica saves Carol from her disastrous first encounter with the X-Man Rogue. Carol is a cosmically powered go-getter while Jessica is initially solitary and brooding. But the deep empathy Jessica has for Carol, somewhat missing in the other Avengers at the time, cements their long friendship into recent years.

Spider-Man And The Wasp

Wasp and Spider-Man arguing.

Peter Parker is one of the most likable people in the Marvel Universe, but Spider-Man not so much. One of the more unusual sour relationships Spider-Man has had is with the Wasp, Janet Van Dyne. Spidey wasn't a member of the Avengers yet when he first met her, and she bristled at him, citing a natural antagonism between spiders and wasps. He also clashed with her daughter, Nadia Van Dyne, when they were both members of the Avengers in more recent years. Peter and Janet eventually bonded over their mutual love of science.

Wonder Man And Beast

Beast and Wonder Man in The Avengers.

Wonder Man and Beast are a very unlikely pair. Simon Williams is a former actor who gains superpowers from the leader of the Masters Of Evil, Baron Zemo, and Hank McCoy is a genius scientist who was born with his mutant abilities. And yet they're great friends.

When Hank joined the Avengers in the 70s, he went through his first major mutation, turning blue and furry. He was filled with self-doubt, as was Williams at the time, who had more or less lost everything at the point in terms of his fame and money. The two found a mutual sense of humor and respect and have been friends ever since.

Rogue And Thor

Thor and Rogue.

Rogue didn't make a great first impression on the Avengers in her first appearance in Avengers Annual #10, as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants led by Mystique. Her biggest rivalry in the team is likely with Carol Danvers, but her most unique friendship is with Thor. The two served together on the Uncanny Avengers iteration of the team. Thor vouched for Rogue at the time, after she butted heads in a bloody way with Scarlet Witch. Equal in power and dedication to their respective causes, the two formed a strong friendship.

Falcon And The Winter Soldier

Falcon and Winter Solider in their series.

The Falcon And Winter Soldier have one of the most antagonistic relationships in the MCU. Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes are both best friends of Steve Rogers but come from vastly different backgrounds and experiences that put them at odds. Still, the two men have formed a bond in the comics, as both have been allies and both have been Captain America in the comics. Their relationship was on much firmer ground in the comics from the start than it has been in the MCU, with both men looking out for each other on various missions.

Quicksilver And Finesse

Quicksilver And Finesse.

Pietro Maximoff, AKA Quicksilver, is one of the most prickly personalities in all of Marvel Comics. But he found a close and unlikely bond with Finesse, a member of the Young Avengers alongside Quicksilver's nephews Wiccan and Speed. Finesse learns at a superhuman rate, which may account for Quicksilver's empathy for her. As her instructor on the Young Avengers, he took an interest in her training and development, which led them to form a friendship that Pietro rarely does among his teammates.

Thor And Captain America

Avengers Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Panther, and Hulk.

Thor and Captain America are both founding members of the Avengers, and generally very close. But that wasn't always the case. The two strong personalities clashed early on, with both perhaps seeing themselves as the natural leader of the team. But over time, they developed a deep respect and friendship.

Their connection is best symbolized in the fact that Captain America has been able to wield Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor, on numerous occasions in the comics. Thor also repaired Captain America's shield after it was broken in battle in the comics. The two have one of the sweetest friendships in the MCU.

Spider-Man And Wolverine

Wolverine Spider-Man Fist Bump

Spider-Man and Wolverine weren't members of the Avengers until the 2000s when the major Marvel heroes joined together during the New Avengers run by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Finch. They didn't get along at all at first, with Spidey's quippy personality rubbing the brooding Logan the wrong way. But they quickly became close friends and allies, to the point that Logan becomes one of the very few people that Peter willingly reveals his true identity to.

Black Widow And Hawkeye

Hawkeye and Black Widow.

Black Widow and Hawkeye represent perhaps the most durable and critical friendship on the team, but they're also unlikely friends. Natasha Romanoff is a former spy with a dark past. Clint Barton flirted with crime and villainy in his early appearances, but he's mostly been a regular, down-to-earth kind of guy.

But their respective want for some normalcy and to right past wrongs brought them together. In a world of gods and monsters, they're both very human. An unanswered question about the upcoming Black Widow movie is if this friendship will get one more spotlight.
