Liam Neeson has his action game face on again playing an ordinary man whose identity has been (dare we say it) Taken in the upcoming Noirish flick, Unknown, from director Jaume Collet-Serra.
An official trailer has been released for the paranoia thriller, which was formerly known as Unknown White Male but is now known as, well, the new action pic that stars Neeson, is set in Europe, but isn’t Taken 2.
Neeson stars in Unknown as Dr. Martin Harris, who travels overseas to attend a medical conference in Berlin with his wife Elizabeth (January Jones of Mad Men fame). While in Germany, the couple grabs a cab ride from a woman named Gina (Diane Kruger), which results in a crash that leaves Martin in a coma for four days. When the medical man awakens from his comatose state, he finds that not only does Elizabeth seemingly no longer know who he is, but that a mysterious man (Aiden Quinn) has assumed Martin’s identity.
The Unknown trailer does raise some significant questions, like: Why do Americans that travel to Europe in movies always seem to get involved in complicated espionage plots? Did Dr. Harris spend part of his time in medical school learning how to beat up potential assassins and engage in deadly car chases? And why is Frank Langella wearing the same fedora he had on in last year’s bizarre thriller, The Box?
Check out what we mean by watching the Unknown trailer below:
Collet-Serrra does not have a great track record as a director (he helmed the so-so House of Wax remake and the borderline silly thriller Orphan as well) and Unknown looks to be very much a standard conspiracy thriller in the vein of older, better films like Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest or even Roman Polanski’s Frantic, which starred Harrison Ford.
Neeson is very good at kickin’ butt in movies (especially when they’re set overseas) and he, Jones, and Kruger are all easy on the eyes, which should help convince moviegoers to take a chance on Unknown. The film will be released in the U.S. on February 18th, 2011, so there probably won’t be anything that’s much better playing at your local theater anyway.
